You and I, whether we know it or not, long for community. Jesus desires us to be active participants in His community known as the Kingdom of God. We seek a place where we are accepted, loved, and safe. Yet, for many in our western world, they can stand in the sea of people and personalities and still feel cold and alone, desperate for connection. What has happened? Healthy communities have been lost to slowly growing isolation that has been happening over the years and has now become a mainstream epidemic in recent months. So what is the solution? Restoration of intimate loving relationships as the center of our communities of faith and practice. Seek forgiveness when we must, forgive as we must, and restore the lost with the hopeful message of the Cross of Christ Jesus. Because Jesus has the power to restore us to our community.

Christians: Have you ever wondered why you’re still here? Have you ever wished God would just take you home? Have you ever prayed as the Apostle John, “Come, Lord Jesus!” Most of us have. The rest of us will. But the fact is, God still has a job for us to do. We have a purpose. We have work to do. Wednesday’s passage (Titus 3:9-15) tells us the plans God has for us. Not unique plans that he has fashioned specifically for each of us, but basic plans that are for every believer. They are the basic training of the Lord’s call on our life. If we aren’t carrying out these general orders what makes us think we’re ready for specific orders? In the text, Paul answers the question concerning the purpose of Christians. That is—our general purpose, the purpose common to all believers.

There are times when we need to take a leap of faith. But are we just being crazy or being obedient to the God of heaven. It is true, there are times that our personal experiences and feelings are often in conflict with the commandments of God. So what do we do then? We need to put our feelings aside and trust God even when it does not fit into our understanding, for there are great blessings that await the willing follower of Jesus. More blessings than we can even imagine.

Do you ever feel overwhelmed trying to do it all? We can work so hard and try so many ways to make it on our own—to earn, achieve, and accomplish. But in Titus chapter 3 Paul instructs his young protege in the faith Titus to remind God’s people that it is not their good works that save them—it is God’s good work that does. It is good to remember that really nothing good comes from us; everything good in and through our lives is the direct result of the grace of God. So, we must remember that we don’t do good works for our salvation but we should do them out of an attitude of thankfulness because of our salvation.

Once you give your heart to Christ, life is a breeze, right? Ha! If only that were the case! Separating yourself from the world and choosing to walk with Christ is more akin to throwing down the gauntlet before the old man. The old man may be dead, but he still wants to influence you and he makes his demands known. Many times, he likes to remind us of our past faults to keep us spiritually paralyzed. How should we respond when the old man comes a-knockin'? Pastor Dave encourages us to take a page out of Jael's book...
