Littlefinger the Puppet-Master (3:37)

Rob and Antonio begin this episode by discussing the biggest revelation of the episode, Littlefinger’s influence and covert plans spanning back to the beginning of Season 1. In this episode it is revealed in a scene between Lysa Arryn and Littlefinger that she was responsible for poisoning her husband and former Hand of the King, Jon Arryn. We learn that Littlefinger was pulling the strings and was also responsible for Lysa sending the letter to Catelyn Stark in Episode 1 of Season 1 which warned Catelyn that the Lannister’s were responsible for the death of Jon Arryn which essentially put in motion the beginning of the tension between the Starks and the Lannisters. Rob asks Antonio for clarification about the dagger used to try and assassinate Bran Stark. The dagger was identified as Littlefinger’s but he convinced Catelyn that he lost in a wager to Tyrion which led Catelyn to arresting Tyrion and his eventual trial at the Vale. Antonio compares this creation of chaos to the same strategy used by Russel Hantz in Survivor. At this point Rob’s big question is where is this all going? Is Littlefinger’s next move to kill off Lysa Arryn?

All Hail King Tommen (12:25)

The next topic moves to King’s Landing where we find Tommen being inaugurated as King. Margaery gives a Tommen a flirtatious look from atop the balcony which Cersei notices. This leads to Cersei to approach Margaery where they discuss Joffrey’s death and the possibility of her marrying Tommen. Rob is taken aback by the warmth and thawing of Cersei’s typically cold demeanor shown to Margaery. Margaery tests Cersei’s limits and even goes as far as to call her sister despite being warned in Season 3 that if she ever referred to Cersei as sister again she would be murdered in her sleep. Antonio says that Cersei seems to be showing vulnerability but points out this is likely  an attempt to gain favor with Mace Tyrell, Margaery’s father who will be 1 of 3 jurors for Tyrion’s trial.

Cersei Kissing Up to Daddy (16:20)

In the next scene we see Cersei being extremely agreeable with Tywin regarding the prospect of Tommen and Margaery marrying as well as her own marriage to Loras. It is very obvious that she is trying to placate her father in hopes of manipulating his jury vote against Tyrion. However, Tywin is stern about not discussing matters of the trial. Rob brings up the issue of Tywin possibly hand picking the jury to ensure a guilty verdict for Tyrion which he initially thought was the case, but after this scene is no longer sure of Tywin’s intentions. Antonio agrees that Tywin has stacked the jury in his favor but will just do what he deems is best for his family and the realm. Tywin then brings up the precarious financial situation the Lannisters are in with the Iron Bank of Bravos, which makes it obvious to Rob and Antonio that the marriages to the Tyrell’s are not merely political but also have considerable financial implications.

Cersei Campaigns Mother of the Year Award (21:35)

They move on to a scene where Cersei is appealing to Prince Oberyn’s sensibilities as a parent. Cersei ask Oberyn about her daughter Myrcella who is in Dorne. to which Prince Oberyn replies that he last saw her swimming with his daughters in the Water Gardens.

In this episode Rob and Josh discuss a number of topics on this Game of Thrones Recap:

* Josh points out that there were major differences between the Game of Thrones books and what happened in the game of thrones TV show with the white walker at the end of the episode. The baby from Craster’s Keep that was taken by a white walker is original material not from the books which is a real curveball for Game of Thrones fans

* The show spells out this week that Lord Peter Balish aka Littlefinger was working with Lady Olenna of House Tyrell and they were who poisoned King Joffrey at the Purple Wedding. Rob and Josh discuss the clues that showed what Lady Olenna had done as she explained the murder to Lady Margaery

* Rob and Josh discuss the rape scene that was depicted last week between Cersei and Jaime Lannister. Rob wonders if the show did not intend for the fan reaction to be that Jaime is a rapist and asks if it was just a poorly executed scene. While Jaime was upset with Jaime about visiting Tyrion and not wanting to kill Sansa – she doesn’t seem to be sour about the incident from Game of Thrones, Season 4 Episode 3.

In this week’s recap, Rob and Josh discuss all of the fallout from King Joffrey’s death at the purple wedding including:

The Aftermath of the Purple Wedding:

After Cercei screams for Tyrion to be taken, Dantos, the Fool, grabs Sansa as Tywin screams that no one leaves the capital.  The fool takes Sansa off in a row boat to “someplace safe”.  The fool and Sansa get to a ship, Sansa climbs up the ladder and Littlefinger is on the boat.  Littlefinger has the fool murdered because he was a drunk and a fool.  Littlefinger reveals that he had the necklace made and promises Sansa that she is safe.

Lady Olenna and Margaery Tyrell:

Margaery asks if she is the queen and wonders if she was cursed.  Lady Olenna tells Margaery that she did wonderful work.  Lady Olenna tells her that even though that it was bad to watch Joffrey dies, it would’ve been worse to marry him.

Tywin, Cersei and Tommen Mourn For Joffrey.

Tywin asks Tommen what kind of king he will be.  Tywin asks “What’s the most important trait for a King?” Tommen cycles through Holiness, Justice and Strength before finally guessing that WISDOM is what makes a good king.  Tywin explains that the wise king knows what he knows and listens to his counselors.  Tywin adds, “Your brother was not a wise king, your brother was not a good king”.

Once Tywin and Tommen leave, Jaime enters and requests to be alone with Cersei.  Cersei says that it was Tyrion who killed Joffrey.  Cersei remembers how Tyrion said, “The day will come when you think that you are happy and your joy will turn to ashes in your mouth”.  Cersei says Jaime needs to avenge him and kill Tyrion.  Cersei begs Jaime to kill him.  Instead of working on killing Tyrion, Jaime wants to makeout with Cersei over Joffrey’s body.  Jaime says “You’re a hateful woman”.  Jaime proceeds to rape Cersei next to Joffrey’s body.  Cersei says “It’s not right”.  Josh Wigler compares this scene to how this was portrayed in the books.

The Hound and Arya Stark:

The Hound and Arya are making their way to the Eyrie.  The pair are spotted as a farmer and posing as a soldier who fought for the Tully’s, they get invited over for dinner.  The farmer recruits the Hound in to taking a job and agrees to “Fair wages for fair work”.  However, the next day, the Hound beat up the farmer and took his silver. Arya is upset but the Hound says that this is how the world works.  He asks Arya, “How many starks do they have to behead before you figure it out?”

Sam at The Wall with Gilly 

Back at Castle Black, Sam gets teased by the other Nights Watchmen about Gilly.  Sam talks with Gilly about her being called a “wilding”.  Sam seems to be getting jealous of all the other Night’s watchmen.  When Sam expresses his worry for Gilly, she says, “Thank you for worrying about me”.  Sam doesn’t know if Gilly is safe at the wall.

 

Dragonstone:

Stanis asks Davos to read the letter about the death of King Joffrey.  Stannis is upset because Joffrey is dead like Melisandra predicted and Gendry (Robert’s bastard) is gone because Davos helped him escape.  Stannis feels that he is running out of time and tells Davos he needs an army.
