We Wanna Watch

This week's Lane's Frame is Happy-Go-Lucky (2008) directed by Mike Leigh! Our third Leigh film covered to date, this dramedy features another complex and slightly grating main character played hilariously by Sally Hawkins. We get into the exacting mid-aughts fashion, the clever episodic storytelling, and the emotional realism of the writing - all this after we dissect the new Mario movie trailer, of course.

This week's Rick's Pick is Blue Velvet (1986) directed by David Lynch! We aren't very impressed by this movie and struggle to connect with its themes and performances. Instead we digress about anime and an Egyptian film Ricky heard about in an Uber. Sorry Lynch fans! Maybe next time.

It's Bugonia (2025) directed by Yorgos Lanthimos!! Despite the power outages trying to stop us, we get sweaty, greasy, and stinky talking about this movie's surprisingly grounded tone, fun sound design, and the wonderful performances from all the cast except for one. Anyway you know what you're getting so just click play. After we stopped recording Ricky said he'd let Plemons "pack every hole" so don't believe his coyness herein.

Happy Halloween! Our final WE WANNA WAIL is this week's Lane's Frame, Kwaidan (1964) directed by Masaki Kobayashi. We spend our time talking about the unique fun of an anthology film, forms of Japanese storytelling, and this movie's beautiful colors and painted backdrops.

This August's Auteur is a smash hit, and we talk at length about the amazing performances and impressive, serious handling of such intense subject matter for a 70 year-old movie. A refreshing detour from the last few dour weeks of films, or a BLEH! movie that we just couldn't lock into? This week's Lane's Frame is about Baz Luhrmann's Moulin Rouge! from 2001. After a loooong opening about the new Conjuring movie (lol), we talk about this movie's fun performances, lackluster story, and ascension into the WWW canon of "immediately pre-9/11 culture".
