  • Ignore the hype of a NASDAQ record high- watch Treasuries, Building Wealth, Investing, Retirement, Stock Trading, Freedom, Liberty, Applying History
    Episode 87:  Watch the yield on the 10 year Treasury.  As long as it stays above 2%, I think the market trend will continue to favor foreign stocks that export to the US and are energy dependent.  I’m betting on commodities to fall further.

  • Greece has been in decline since 200BC, Building Wealth, Investing, Retirement, Stock Trading, Freedom, Liberty, Applying History
    Episode 86:  As previously mentioned, currently I like some European stocks- those favored by the strong US dollar and weak oil prices.  Many people are worried about Greece defaulting.  I believe that troubles in Greece could cause some additional market volatility.  But the drama has dragged on too long (US interest rates are back up, gold has stabilized).  The ECB has made a decisive move with QE in excess of $1 billion…about 10 times Greece’s entire GDP.
    Europe is an unstable place, the origin of two world wars in the past century.  It will continue to have its problems, but Greece is a minor one.  Greece’s GDP has already declined 30% in the past 6 years.  Greece’s GDP is less than Louisiana.  In terms of economic significance, Greece is to Europe what Mississippi is to the US.
    In 1941 Greece surrendered to Germany in about 30 days.  What do you think will happen this time?

  • Reality of poor retirement planning, Building Wealth, Investing, Retirement, Stock Trading, Freedom, Liberty, Applying History
    Episode 85:  Poor retirement planning will have a detrimental effect on your lifestyle.  During income earning years, lavish lifestyles can be funded by credit card and various other forms of debt.  But the bill from deficit spending will eventually come due.  The pain will be most harshly felt in old age when earnings capacity is limited and health is in decline.
    People that live well in retirement do so by one of two means:

    * A good pension and saving at least 10% during their working years.
    * Those without a good pension must save at least 20% and be successful investors.

    Those that don’t comply with either of the above two methods will find their old age characterized by:

    * Working to age 70 and beyond.
    * Downsizing house and moving to lower cost area.
    * Moving in with family/friends.
    * Drastically reducing consumption.
    * Relying on government assistance.

  • Why there is no HYPER-INFLATION, Building Wealth, Investing, Retirement, Stock Trading, Freedom, Liberty, Applying History
    Episode 84:  Many people have been concerned about hyper-inflation because of all the government deficit spending and in particular because of the huge expansion of the Federal Reserve’s balance sheet.  However, core inflation has been tame because all the “money printing” has gone to fill in the hole left from the 2008 Housing Bubble.

  • What Greece & Radio Shack have in common, Building Wealth, Investing, Retirement, Stock Trading, Freedom, Liberty, Applying History
    Episode 83:  No one wants to buy what Greece and Radio Shack are selling.  Greece survives on European sponsored extortion subsidies/guarantees.  Radio Shack has been sustained by access to cheap credit.
    Greece may go bankrupt but they will survive.  Radio Shack has no future.
    Neither’s bankruptcy would prompt a financial meltdown.  Greece is too small, it would take Italy, Spain, or Portugal to throw Europe into a crisis.  Likewise, Radio Shack’s vacant US retail space will eventually be absorbed but watch out if Sears, JCPenney, Barnes&Noble, and Office Depot all shut down.
    Greek drama will ripple the markets over the coming weeks and months but it won’t collapse the Euro.

  • Understanding Inflation & Deflation, Building Wealth, Investing, Retirement, Stock Trading, Freedom, Liberty, Applying History
    Episode 82:  Don’t be fooled by political & financial double-speak.  Prices rise & fall because of two independent factors- Supply/Demand and Inflation/Deflation.
    Supply > Demand:  prices fall  [this can be caused by a number of factors: consumer apathy, over capacity of production, technological advances, etc]
    Demand > Supply:  prices increase [consumers are willing to pay more to get something that is scarce]
    Increased Money Supply:  prices increase because more money is available, this is INFLATION [money supply can be increased by Central Banks manipulating interest rates or “printing money”, easy mortgages loans, or loose credit cards]
    Decreased Money Supply: prices decrease, this is DEFLATION [money supply is restricted, for example because of stricter lending policies or higher interest rates]

    Episode 81:  Extreme volatility has persisted throughout the first month of the year.  Other than a few exceptions, I’ve decided to invest in the reciprocal of what’s ailing the US market- foreign nations that export to the US and consume oil.

  • Why you HATE your JOB, Building Wealth, Investing, Retirement, Stock Trading, Freedom, Liberty, Applying History
    Episode 80:  I know a lot of you don’t like working for The Man.  In fact you hate your job.  I totally understand that and believe me, I’ve been there.   But in this podcast I remind you that the grass isn’t always greener and before you decide to jump ship, make sure you understand why you hate your current job- otherwise you might find yourself running FROM SOMETHING rather than running TO SOMETHING.
