Are you a packing procrastinator? Or do you start planning your trip outfits the second you buy airline tickets? Regardless of how (or when) you pack, there is zero debate on "what to pack."
This week, your favorite personal stylist – Holly Katz, aka The Hostess with the Mostest – gives you the run-down on her "Vacation Must-Haves Packing Checklist." You do not want to leave home without it!
What to pack, how to pack, when to pack, forgetting to pack…. All this drama can totally ruin your vacation vibe. #GOODVIBESONLY
So, if you've been planning the trip of your dreams, or just a weekend celebration like a graduation, a wedding, the in-laws 50th wedding anniversary (sorry) – then the best way to ensure you will enjoy every minute of your trip is to know what to put in your suitcase without even blinking an eye, or scrambling for last-minute outfits. #FASHIONCRIME
PRO TIP:
Holly has curated a perfect Pinterest Board with easy to find and pack travel wardrobe examples. She also has a FREE Travel Wardrobe Checklist – available only to our podcast listeners and newsletter subscribers.
THE PACKING PLAN:
If you are going away on a lovely vacation, or just taking a long weekend for an important life event, you need stuff to wear for multiple occasions. Even just a 'beach trip" requires specific outfits and multiple items – from shoes and jewelry to casual and formal wear. Do not kid yourself that all you need is a bathing suit. #BadPlan
Pick your suitcase. Holly does not advise the "carry-on bag" plan. Grown-up people need multiple outfits, shoes, accessories, and toiletries when they travel. If you are going somewhere where you need to "show up," do not plan on re-wearing outfits or wearing clothing that has been stuffed into a carry-on. #NotOK #YouWillCheckABag
Don't forget about your carry-on bag: critical for personal travel items you will always need access to during travel. Laptop, headphones, medicine, etc.
Once you know your event, your location, your travel schedule, and the weather forecast of the places you will be visiting, start planning your outfits: daytime, evening wear, sleeping clothes, swimming, activities and traveling. That's a lot of outfits. Too much for a carry on. #sorrynotsorry
HOW TO PLAN OUTFITS
Start in your closet and think logically – from your drawers for the little things all the way up to long dresses hanging in your closet, Holly has a methodical process that works every time!
Travel items:
AirPods, book, jacket or wrap, sunglasses, medicines, jewelry, makeup, your computer and device chargers.
Intimates:
Underclothes
Sleepwear
Socks
Shapewear
Workout clothes
Swim wear, coverups, hats, sunscreen
Makeup, perfume, toiletries
Daytime:
Shorts
T-shirts
Jeans and pants
Sweaters
Bodysuits
Jackets
Casual shoes and accessories
Evening:
Dresses or evening wear
Slacks and pants
Jacket, wrap or coat
Jewelry, evening accessories
Evening shoes
You CAN pack without stress, without panic buying, without over-packing AND without forgetting one single item once you learn Holly's magical trick to vacation packing.
Be sure to listen to this week's episode - we can't give away all the secret sauce here! Plus, it always sounds like so much more fun coming directly from Holly! #FACTS

"The Best Fashion Friend You Never Knew You Needed"
Hosted by Your Favorite Personal Stylist, Holly Katz!
www.fashioncrimespodcast.com
The 2023 Met Gala red carpet was back again last Sunday night at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. This year, the annual affair celebrated the exhibition "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty."
Now, before y'all decide that the Met Gala may not be your cup of tea, listen long enough to indulge as Holly and our LADY ABOUT TOWN, Nolan, give us their rundown of the best and worst dressed candidates, and of course, some hilarious (and possibly inappropriate) commentary!
This gala honored the legacy of Karl Lagerfeld—the late designer who helmed fashion houses such as Chanel, Fendi, Chloé, and his own eponymous line—and raised funds for The Met's Costume Institute.
Just as important as the exhibition, of course, is the star-studded red-carpet spectacle that took place as guests made their way up the famous Met steps.
After all, the Met Gala—often dubbed the "Super Bowl of fashion"—has created some of the most memorable (and viral) celebrity red carpet looks from the past decade.
OVERALL THOUGHTS:
This year's theme lent itself to all things Karl Lagerfeld, which in most cases focused on his years as the Creative Director at Chanel.
Translation: we saw a lot of black-and-white dressing, as well as Chanel's trademark tweed, quilting, pearls...lots of pearls, golden chains, and fabric Camellia flowers.
By the way, the craziest part of the night was the 3, count them, THREE people who dressed as Lagerfeld's beloved cat, Choupette.
BEST DRESSED
Not that your favorite personal stylists always agree, here were the top outfits:
Dua Lupa (in vintage FW92 Chanel wedding couture, and a Tiffany diamond the size of the Moon)
Giselle in vintage Chanel SS07 wedding couture
Maude Apatow in Chloé
Vanessa Hudgens in Michael Kors
Florence Pugh in Valentino (but not the head-dress...um, no.)
Kim Kardashian in custom Schiaparelli (in 50,000 freshwater pearls-I wonder what that's like?)
Kylie Jenner in Jean Paul Guiltier
Paris Hilton in Marc Jacobs
Kerry Washington in Michael Kors
Jenne Ortega in custom Thom Browne
Ashley Graham by designer Harris Reed (YYYAASSSS)
Viola Davis custom hot pink Valentino
Jennifer Lopez in custom Ralph Lauren
Sidney Sweeney in custom Miu Miu
Anne Hathaway in white tweed Atelier Versace gown
Amanda Seyfried in Oscar De La Renta gorgeous dress, but dressed as a Taylor Swift wanna be, so, Nolan said MEH.)
Lea Michele in Michael Kors
Anok Yai in Prabal Gurung
Bad Bunny in Jacquemus (best Male according to Nolan)
Rihanna in custom Valentino
Lily Collins in Vera Wang
WORST DRESSED
Again, not always in agreement, but chosen with passion:
Cardi B in a grey wig and Richard Quinn pink and grey outfit-(after party look)
Gigi Hadid with her entire ass was out in Givenchy
Kendall Jenner in Marc Jacobs (how 'bout some pants? Hated the boots that made her 6'4".)
Lizzo in a custom black silk crêpe Chanel dress with a glass pearls harness, inspired by a look from the 1991/92 ready-to-wear collection-Solid effort but eeehhhhh?
Mary J Blige in custom Burberry a plunging floral dress & matching thigh-high boots
Margo Robbie in a black silk chiffon gown with plastic and gold chain detailing at the waist, first worn by Cindy Crawford as part of Chanel's haute couture spring 1993
Doja Kat was lovely in Oscar, if you cut her head off
For our besties of the podcast, we bring you this commentary on the Met Gala not because you are going to dress as Karl Lagerfeld's cat at a $300,000-per-person event in NYC, but because fashion is fun, whimsical and always keeps us guessing.
This late designer is iconic in every sense of the word, from his stint at Chloé to his long-standing tenures at Fendi, Chanel, and his eponymous brand to his unmissable uniform comprised of a white button-down shirt, black sunglasses, and a tailored black jacket, making him the perfect fashion figure to be honored at this year's Met Gala for the accompanying Costume Institute exhibit, "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty."
Be sure to follow along with Holly's Pinterest Board to see each and every one of these styles!

The Only Holly You need to know
After acting as the "Hostess with the Mostest" on the red carpet at a recent fashion event, Holly's feet – while gorgeous in her designer shoes – ended up killing her from standing up all night in the wrong shoes.
THIS IS A FASHION CRIME:
Wearing shoes that are too high, no matter how beautiful they are - or how perfectly they accentuate your outfit - hamburger meat for feet is no bueno. (Can the marketing people please trademark that?)
Recovering from her foot pain, in this episode, your favorite personal stylist Holly Katz outlines the shoes you need to have in your wardrobe.
This is important is because people sometimes are not sure what the current trends are or how much money they should be spending on shoes. Or, how to branch out of their comfort zone when it comes to trying on something different or new.
People often tend to be very price-driven when it comes to shoes, and obviously that makes sense. They have a set amount in their mind, which can be a little bit limiting if you're looking around for something interesting and new.
With that being said, these are the must-have styles for shoes.
(As always, please be sure to check Holly's Pinterest Board for all of these shoe recommendations and more!)
FLATS
Designer Slides
Ballet
Mules
Loafers
Mary Janes
Oxfords
Flat Slingbacks
HOW TO STYLE FLATS:
You can wear flats with just about *anything, but please, please wear no-show socks of some sort! Wear your flats with a mini dress, cropped flair pants, or anytime you are busy working on your feet all day with your favorite slacks or dressy shorts.
*Pro Tip:
If you are grown up woman going to a formal event, you must wear heels. No flats allowed (unless you've just had old-lady bunion surgery – ouch!).
BRANDS WE LOVE:
Birdies, Valentino Rock Studs, Hermès, Jeffrey Campbell, Sam Edelman, Sarah Flint, Ally Shoes and Cecelia NYC shoes.
HEELS:
Wedge heels
Block heels
Platform heels
HOW TO STYLE HEELS:
Wear new heels around the house to break them in, start with lower heels if you have not worn high heels in a while, and try a block heel or wedge heel for comfort.
High heels look best with dresses and skirts of all lengths, of course, but also try them with leather pants, dressy shorts or jeans.
Pro Tip:
Platform heels can give the illusion of a high heel without the pain of a stiletto!
BRANDS WE LOVE:
Gianvito Rossi, Roger Vivier, Steve Madden, Guiseppe Zanotti
BOOTS:
Tall boots
Booties
Cowboy boots
Winter boots
Not Rainboots
HOW TO STYLE BOOTS:
Holly LOVES a good boot! Boots will make your legs look longer and leaner. She wears them with dresses, maxi skirts, pants, really, everything.
Look for short booties that come just to the ankle bone. You can also try combat-STYLE boots, with just a touch of the combat sass. As well as real cowboy boots, or cowboy-style boots, as they are always, always in style.
You do not really want to wear suede or heavy boots in the summer – if you run hot, you know what we mean.
*Pro Tip:
Don't even think of wearing tall galoshes or rain boots unless you live in Seattle and are walking in the rain. PUDDLES of rain. Stomping around a grocery store in Atlanta in your tall rain boots; just know they are for function, or walking around in a torrential rain storm in NYC. Not when you're going to your garage and it's a threat of rain.
BRANDS WE LOVE:
Paris Texas, Prada, Roger Vivier, Boot Barn, Gianvito Rossi, Isabel Marant,
SANDALS:
You can wear flat sandals, wedge sandals, low-heel sandals and high-heel sandals.
You are NOT allowed to wear Tevas, Chacos, Crocs, sports slides or *flip flops. NON-NEGOSH. Also, no socks with sandals. #DUH. Don't let her find out.
The only pass you will get from Holly are Birkenstocks, because they are always evolving and somehow manage to stay on-trend. This is the only shoe in the "hippy footwear" family allowed.
*Pro Tip:
Rubber flip flops are for the beach. Period. Leather flip flops, embellished flip flops, etc., are acceptable.
FitFlops are not allowed. Never. Ever. They are not cute, and they don't make you fit. Stop falling for the false advertising.
BRANDS WE LOVE: Tory Burch, Valentino, Gucci, Alexandre Birman, Jimmy Choo , Guiseppe Zanotti
FASHION SNEAKERS:
If you are a friend of the podcast, you know the rules already: NO workout sneakers unless you are working out. END OF STORY.
Fashion sneakers are fun, on-trend, comfortable and don't smell like a gym locker room. See the difference? Go back and listen to Episode 128 to get the full lecture once and for all. Then, you can ENJOY the sneaker trend!!
BRANDS WE LOVE:
Superga, Nike, Golden Goose, New Balance, Converse, Adidas, Michael Kors
FINAL THOUGHTS: 1.) Please wear socks with your shoes when you can. No-shows are best, but Tube socks are also back (yikes)- so don't be shocked when your teenagers are rocking those.
2.) How many shoes are too many? You can never have too many.
Just kidding! If you have over 100 pair, that is probably too much. You should have as many as you can realistically wear. For real. A cohesive shoe wardrobe is anywhere between 25-45 pair.
3.) Keep your shoes updated and looking nice. Go find your neighborhood shoe repair person. Old, worn-out shoes, no matter what the brand or price point, look like old, worn-out shitty shoes.
4.) If your feet hurt, or you have a hard time finding shoes to fit your feet or if you have major feet issues, find a company who caters to customers that are hard to fit like our friends at Ally Shoes or Pedro Garcia.
5.) Store your shoes properly and where you can always see them: Not in the original box, not under your long dresses in your closet, not in plastic boxes. Find a way to display them in your closet area so you will be tempted to rotate the shoes and styles you have invested in.
Carry on! Life is too short! Eat the cake! Buy the shoes! Listen to our podcast!

The 2023 Kentucky Derby is upon us, and one super savvy Friend of the Podcast wrote us to ask Holly about what to wear to the Kentucky Derby. So, whether you are headed to the real Churchill Downs in Louisville, or just dressing up for your own party, Holly has "The Best Kentucky Derby Outfit Ideas" all lined up on this week's episode.
What makes up a Kentucky Derby Outfit anyway?
A long time ago, in a place far, far away, the derby started back in 1875 with the intention of a grand event to be luxurious and a place to be seen. It was envisioned for the "upper class," modeled after British horse racing, where extravagant dress was expected.
In that era, women of society wore large, elegant hats with matching gloves, shoes, dresses with corsets and or a very tight bustier.
"A large, flamboyant hat was said to bring good luck."
Men, of course, wore suits with ties, hats, and some wore gloves as well canes, etc. So even though fashion has changed throughout the decades, Derby clothing is still very spring-y, with colorful, embellished, and over-the-top fashion. An excuse to dress in your biggest, poofiest, dress and hat to match. #fabulousoverload
But the hat! The hat has been the number one staple of the Derby since it started. When it comes to a hat for the Derby, bigger is better.
So, here is the short list of Holly's Kentucky Derby Outfit Must Haves:
A fabulous dress.
Shoes, preferably platforms or wedges to be comfortable.
Oversized sunglasses.
A cute bag.
Jewelry.
A Mint Julip.
If it's hot, bring a portable fan.
Water, to drink.
HAT or FASCINATOR! (non-negosh)
Start with your blank canvas, or the base of your outfit. (Holly is going to trademark that statement).
In this case it might be the hat or the dress. The dress can be long or short (but it will be hot and mobbed with people if you actually go to the race, so dress accordingly.)
Pick a color theme or pattern theme. (For extra fun as a couple, pick matching outfits or theme!)
PRO TIP:
See Holly's Pinterest Board for this episode for her favorite dress styles.
Here are some of Holly favorite dress brands:
Lela Rose
La Double J
Milly
Monique Lhuillier
Mary Katrantzou
Emilia Wickstead
SHOES:
Platform and wedges give the illusion of a higher heel, but with a flat bottom for support all day and comfort. (AKA: smoke and mirrors).
ACCESSORIES:
Oversized sunglasses, statement jewelry and a fabulous handbag (to hide your fan and hold your water, because the weather will most likely be HOT!).
The name of the game for Derby dressing is pattern, color and prints! This is your ticket to wear pattern, pattern and more pattern. Go big or go home! #youcandoit
PRO TIP: For men, try a crazy printed suit – you know – the full suit with a pineapple pattern? How about a margarita pattern? See Opposuits for some hilarious ideas.
THE HAT:
Any size and style of hat is up to you. Big floppy hats, stuffy stiff hats, gravity-defying fascinators: we love them all. So many to choose from!
Some Fave Brands for Hats:
Eugenia Kim
Merve Bayindir
Maggie Mowbray Millinery
Rose Ivy Design Co

"The Best Fashion Friend You Never Knew You Needed!"
Hosted by your favorite personal stylist and the only Holly you need to know, Holly Katz!

Spring must be here because the pollen sure as heck is. Ugh!
And, while it is getting warmer during the daytime hours, be careful, as it can still be colder at night. That means you might want to layer a few things. If you don't live in Florida, don't start dressing like it's the dead of summer - because it isn't.
Did you know that dressing for spring is actually very easy? If the temperature starts to get above 50 degrees and it's sunny where you are, you have Holly's permission to start wearing your favorite spring clothing!
The name of the game is lighter, layered, effortless dressing with pieces that you can mix and match without a ton of effort.
This week, we have a comprehensive list of things that will benefit you to have in your wardrobe this spring.
But First!
A short refresher on being the best-dressed wedding guest this wedding season, because we've had a lot of emails about that again. Two things to remember:
Go back and listen to Episode 84 and Episode 92. We have you covered in every single way possible, so you can be "The Best-Dressed Wedding Guest" on Parts 1 and 2.
Shoes. Plan accordingly so that you can wear your shoes FOR HOURS, dance FOR HOURS, and not be hobbling in pain by 9 p.m. Wear a lower heel, break in new shoes around the house first, and NEVER, EVER, take your shoes off at a wedding. If your feet hurt that badly, Holly recommends taking 2 extra shots of booze to dull the pain rather than showing up on the dancefloor with no shoes. Girl, no. FASHION CRIME ALERT!
All of the suggestions on the podcast and the correlating Pinterest Boards are still completely relevant, so always refer back to that!
OK, back to the Spring Wardrobe Essentials List. (Be sure to follow along on Holly's Pinterest Board for this episode!)
JEANS
Timeless, seasonless, a must-have in your closet at all times!
Baggy, stove-pipe leg jeans are very hot right now. This has been a trend for a while but it's also not going anywhere.
Lighter washes and weights, cropped lengths, flares, and colored jeans are perfect for spring dressing.
PRO TIP:
Don't let anyone ever tell you that a certain jean style is out of style. If a pair of jeans fit you well, guess what? They're in style. Period.
BRANDS HOLLY LOVES:
Mother Denim
L' Agence
Rag and Bone
Good American
Magali Pascal from Anthropologie
COLORED and TAILORED SLACKS
Loose and comfortable without looking over-dressed, lightweight slacks in a variety of colors are certainly a spring essential. Dress them down with flat sandals or tennis shoes - or slip on heels to dress up! These are super versatile and a great transition option for spring weather.
BRANDS HOLLY LOVES:
Proenza Schouler
Serigo Hudson
MAXI SKIRTS
There are several styles of skirts: pleated, sheer, tiered, ruffled, and so on. We love love, love, love a maxi skirt. It's the easiest thing in the world to put on. It's great for all seasons and can be paired with flip-flops at the beach, or with tall boots and sweater or jacket.
Skirt lengths are a personal preference. It depends on your body type. Holly prefers an A-line skirt to hide a couple of little things. The only rule here is NOT TOO SHORT!
SHORTS
Shorts, much like skirts, are about the length. For women of a certain age, Hollys prefers eight- or nine-inch shorts because obviously, when you sit down, they are shorter.
Holly recommends high-waisted or belted shorts worn with a heel, cute sandals, or fashion sneakers. Dressy shorts like this are very versatile for day or night:
They come in a variety of fabrics and can be worn with a jacket, a super dressy blouse, and a high heel or high heel sandal.
Look for them in a brocade fabric for extra dressy!
Also available in leather or pleather shorts.
NOT ALLOWED:
Shorts that are too short or made of cheap fabric that can show VPL. (Visible Panty Lines). And make double-sure that your jeans shorts are so tight they look like spandex shorts. They should not be to the knee and tight around the leg.
PRO TIP:
If you're new to the Fashion Crimes Podcast and want to know more about "How to Style Shorts," please go back and listen to Episode 83!
SPRING TOPS
It's so chic to move to a lightweight sweater, instead of just a regular top:
Layer a lightweight sweater or duster layered over a sleeveless mock turtleneck or bodysuit.
Try a pullover or cardigan because they are back on-trend with stove-pipe jeans.
And even though it pains some of us to say it, you can try a sweater vest - as they are back, too! Just keep it understated and monochrome. Don't get a Grandma sweater vest. We're watching you.
PRO TIP:
Holly prefers sweaters that come to the top of the waist, which will help create a waistline!
JACKETS
The number one spring wardrobe essential is a jean jacket. They come in every variation and style:
white
all varieties of washes or colored denim
fitted and more formal
over-size and casual
cropped or longer
Denim jackets can be worn with anything: a dress, skirt, pants, and shorts. And it's the perfect weight for spring. Put a fun brooch on one!
SPRING SHOES
Plain white fashion sneakers (not workout sneakers). Go back and listen to Episode 128 on "How to Style Sneakers."
Flat mules are easy to slip on, always look elegant and still cover your toes as the weather changes.
Up your sandal game with color! While neutrals are always on the essential list, spring is the perfect time to add a pop of hot pink, green, purple, and yellow for fun!
SPRING BAGS
Again, color! Accent any outfit with a small statement handbag or crossbody bag in an unexpected color.
Fringe bags are really fun and unexpected.
PRO TIP:
When changing purses, make sure you have your critical things in a cardholder. Don't forget to transfer the essentials when you change your bag! No one wants to pay for your dinner because you forgot your damn credit card. #facts
Ok! You are now ready to jump into spring in style. There are so many more things to list, and not enough time. This is just the beginning. These are just the MAIN essentials. We're not done here yet.
Thank you so much for all your emails and DMs – and great questions and suggestions. Speaking of, we will be covering Kentucky Derby style soon based on a great DM from a fabulous listener.

The Only Holly You Need To Know
This week, our GAL ABOUT TOWN Nolan Meader, is back on the show with a real question: "Why do people insist on dressing like crap when traveling on an airplane?"
Your favorite personal stylists certainly have a point of view on how to dress when traveling, and it does not include sweats, pajamas, or workout sneakers. You are still in public people! Yes, you can be comfortable, but you do not need to offend the rest of us with what you wear to bed.
"I just don't understand why it's a thing. Don't you want to look your best all the time? Don't you want to feel your best all the time? Don't you want to get somewhere and be excited?"
– Nolan Meader, personal stylist
Obviously, this has been the theme song of this podcast for a lonnnnng time.
So, what are the rules for fashion when traveling? Listen this week for what not to wear - and some great ideas for fashionable travel outfits to wear instead.
First, understand that you too can look fabulous on a plane. Yes, you can. Instead of grabbing those yoga pants that may show more of your body parts than intended, you can grab some real pants. How about that? Grab some real pants.
What Not to Wear: Just don't.
Pajamas. (This goes for kids who can walk and talk, too. Only babies are allowed in their PJs).
Workout clothes that are meant for working out, like skin-tight yoga pants or workout bras, or workout sneakers.
Sweatpants: We don't care if you are dumb enough to spend $1,000 on Gucci sweats. No sweatpants for grown-ups.
Gross, sweaty workout sneakers. We've had this conversation on other episodes. Fashion sneakers are for fashion. Workout sneakers are for that.
Also, no slides. Again, not even Gucci slides.
Basketball shorts with cowboy boots. For real. Holly saw this, and she can't stop being mad about it.
Super Great Travel Outfit Ideas:
A stretch jean that's very comfortable with an oversized sweater and a blazer or a very comfortable coat. The secret weapon for winter travel is a teddy coat. Because it really is like a blanket, but it looks chic.
Try a Chelsea boot or loafer for shoes instead of the sneeks. Don't break in new shoes at the airport.
Comfortable pants or slacks...or jeans with some stretch. This can be your foundation for comfort, that you can top with travel-friendly pieces like a blazer or jacket (that will keep you warm) and a nice scarf (also to keep you warm) to layer over any top.
For a long-haul flight, you could try a soft dress or skirt that looks smart but is also comfortable and does not bind you around the waist or legs.
The key to traveling is to layer for comfort. You can add and take off when and where you need to – from walking through the airport (when you must be dressed) to getting comfy on the plane to sleep. And then put yourself back together to deplane and greet your new destination in style!
Instead of with bedhead. Ugh.
Thank you to our bestie Nolan for joining us this week! Please be sure to check out all of our social and Pinterest for more fashion advice – and send us a message if you ever get stuck or need help.

Do you have burning fashion questions? Have you been slipping into Holly's social DMs to ask your deepest, darkest style questions? Well – you are not alone, because we get a TON of questions.
So, we only thought it was fair to share one simple fact: Everyone has questions about 'what to wear." Every. Body.
And Fun Fact: Holly LOVES to answer your fashion questions. So, if you have ever sent her a message then you already know this: HOLLY ANSWERS!
It's shocking. We know. But WE ARE THE BEST FASHION FRIEND YOU NEVER KNEW YOU NEEDED, remember? And we mean it. You are our Fashion Besties, and we are here to help.
This week, Holly does some shout-outs to listeners who have shared their own fashion concerns – which also just happen to be the type of questions many women "of a certain age" might have.
LISTEN HERE NOW
Question from Christine:
How to shop for clothes when vertically-challenged (aka, short)?
Answers from Holly:
If you are 5' 3" tall or less, you are in the Petite category of sizing. This should not come as a surprise to you. You have always needed to make clothes work for you. So, no newsflash there.
The only rule you need to know is this: Buy only for fit. Not for fad. And certainly not on the wish that you were taller. Not. Happening.
What IS happening is called alterations. Go to your local dry cleaner and make a new BFF with the tailor at your cleaners. Hemming a dress, skirt or pants is not rocket science! If your clothes fit you perfectly, it does not matter how tall you are. Or are not.
This may mean one extra step when purchasing something new to wear, but you can do it. And it is worth the minimal cost and time it takes.
From Lisa:
What are the rules for mixing prints, and can I really do it?
Answers from Holly:
First, some key points. It takes a lot of confidence to pull off this look. It is advised that this style may be for seasoned and experienced shoppers!
Next: but anyone can do it.
Holly suggests concocting a highly curated mix for this look. Stay in the same color family, to start. If you are trying this look for the first time, do this:
Start with nice jeans as your foundation.
Pick a nice jacket or blazer with a pattern.
Layer a printed shirt in the same color family - and maybe with a smaller pattern - under the jacket.
From afar, you will look well-dressed in a jacket and pants. But closer up, the 'Wow Factor' pops out from under the jacket.
LESS IS MORE, PEOPLE!!!
Do not try this look for the first time with flower-patterned pants and a polka-dot top. Most humans cannot pull this look off - and shouldn't try.
You CAN try a patterned bag or shoe, or other accessories with prints and patterns, as less risky alternatives.
From Sticky Bakery in Toronto:
What the heck does "dressing age-appropriate" actually mean? (And yes, this question is from a bakery!! LOVE IT)
Answers from Holly:
While this topic is something Holly talks about EVERY SINGLE EPISODE, the term 'age-appropriate' can actually be confusing depending on how old you are and where you are in your life at any age.
As an example: Holly is 49 years old. But 49 for one person is not the same for another. If you are 49 years old with no children and are a fashion professional, your style needs may be different than someone else who is 49 and enjoying her days helping to take care of her new grandbaby.
Dressing age-appropriate simply means not giving up-putting in some effort and wearing clothes that fit. Not dressing too old or dressing only to be comfortable. It also means not dressing too young. If your clothes are too tight, you are dressing too young. If your clothes are baggy, you are dressing for comfort. THESE ARE MAJOR FASHION CRIMES.
We don't care how old you are, your clothes need to fit you well and you need to dress with intention. Meaning: Don't give up. Don't slob-out.
Holly encourages people to dress a little out of their comfort zone and be a little unpredictable. Do not dress "safe." Take a small risk and get yourself in a place that makes people question your age.
Because that's what great style is: When people have no idea how old you are.
Suggested ways to combat dressing too old:
Buy nice jeans that have stretch in them. Not high-waisted, Mom jeans. Not your old 501 Levi's. Shop for jeans that fit well and hold you in.
If you need new evening shoes, and you are worried your feet will hurt, take the extra time to shop for style and comfort. Not just comfort. No old lady shoes with padding and low heels, or no heels. You CAN find a beautiful shoe with a lower heel that is still dressy and fun.
If you are ready to let your hair color go grey (which is fine), have a plan. Go to your hairstylist and learn how to transition your color. But more importantly, you must still have a hair STYLE. Just because you go grey does not mean that you don't need a current haircut or you stop blowing out your hair. Long, wiry, non-styled hair is not OK. You need to keep it looking sharp.
From Linda:
How can I dress better without breaking the bank when I work in a corporate job supporting higher-level executives?
Answers from Holly:
When you shop for brands that fit your body best, you won't have to spend a lot to get a great look. Wearing the best-fitting slacks and dresses will automatically elevate your style. Then add fabulous accessories to pull it all together.
Understand what your body needs. If shapewear or support is needed underneath, get fitted for a great bra and wear the shapewear.
Keep your shoes in great shape and buy yourself a freaking nice handbag. Shoes and bags do not need to be high-end designer brands, but they do need to look nice and be made of quality materials. Pick a color and style that is not trendy. And honestly, if your bag costs a little bit more, consider it as an investment in your career. You can easily use a nice bag for 10 years!
And the secret sauce? Gift yourself with a Jiffy steamer. Crisply ironed clothes go a long way in making your style look elevated.
From Maryann at Cape Wishes:
What is your favorite bra brand for someone over 50, and I mean, wayyyy over 50?
Answers from Holly:
Holly has 3 go-to's for bras:
Marie-Jo
Prima Donna
Rigby & Peller
A great fitting bra changes your perspective on how you look in clothing. Just because you're a Size A does not mean you opt out of getting fitted for a bra. Period. Exclamation point!
If you are extra large, you need to get a minimizer or something that really fits. This means a bra that holds your breast tissue up and on the inside frame of your body - not down, not out, not up to your chin - to define your waist. Y'all know we've talked about this before. Go. Get. Fitted. For. A. Damn. Bra.
Anyway, that's it for this week. I cannot thank my new Fashion Besties Lisa, Christine, Linda, Sticky Bakery Toronto and Maryann for writing in!

So, you've heard of "Saying Yes to the Dress" if you are a bride.
Next, comes the "Mother of the Bride" dress ideas all over Pinterest.
But you know what you don't see? Nothing for the "Mother of the Groom." Nada. Zilch! #RUDEEEE
And, since Holly is about to become one, not only does she have a bone to pick with the fashion industry, but she also has some INCREDIBLE suggestions for all those moms out there, who need to look their best without outshining the bride - and/or for sure - the mother of the bride.
Coming in at 3rd Place in the wedding pecking order does not mean that what you wear does not matter. Just because you do not have the pressure of being the "Mother of the Bride" does not mean you don't own a place at the table. You do.
There are so many layers to consider when deciding the TONE of what to wear to your son's wedding that it is daunting. But the truth is, there are some simple style rules to follow, and YOU CAN DO ITTTT!!
Holly is here to save the day with her style suggestions. Be sure to follow her on Pinterest and see her curated MOTHER OF THE GROOM board for guidance. Her suggestions are much more updated than what you will find in bridal stores. Because if you have ever been to one, as the Mother of the Groom, it is depressing, sad and just tired.
So, first off: Shopping for events like this becomes especially difficult for those who may hate to shop. Shopping too early for your perfect dress just to get it over with when you have a big event is a FASHION CRIME.
Important to know for our Boy Moms, and for all women, is based on Holly's basic principle: SHOP FOR YOUR BODY TYPE, and SHOP FOR FIT.
Also?
The day your son comes to you and says some woman wants to marry them, you need to thank God, and Allah, and the Space Aliens that you have raised a respectable person that another person wants to spend the rest of their life with. Can we just celebrate that? You are a SUPERHUMAN for raising an award winning son that someone wants be with 24/7. #awinisawin
"The day your son comes to you, and says he wants to get married; you should breathe a sigh of relieve right then and there." – Holly Katz, mother of the groom.
The wedding of your son is an important event. You will have the pictures of this moment for the rest of your life. So please give yourself some grace and love yourself enough to make these moments matter by allowing yourself to look as wonderful and happy as you feel. This is called self-love, and you deserve it after raising a boy. I mean, let's be honest.
Your son still looks up to you with pride. You are the shining beacon that has always guided him. Showing up with confidence and pride – when you happy with your look and style for his big day – he will feel confident, becuase you do.
So, if this moment feels daunting you to, just know that this isn't rocket science. There's a gajillion dresses in the world. You only need 1. Maybe 2. Really. We promise this will be easier than middle school.
The Top 3 Pain Points for Mothers of the Groom:
Pain Point #3: "I don't want to upstage the bride"
Holly's first thought is: "Great. That's adorable." But what Holly really wants to say is: "Bitch, PLEASE." Because unless you are a 50+ supermodel, that ain't gonna happen. You can quote Holly on that.
What you are really saying is: I want to be in my fashion comfort zone, I don't want to try too hard." This is setting yourself up to fail – because you want little-to-no attention on you.
You may not be saying this consciously, but unconsciously, you are insecure in this situation. Recognize that, so we can fix that.
Pain Point #2: "I don't want to show my arms, or legs, or what-have-you"
Do not hold yourself back because you have body issues. When you focus on this, you are not open. You need to be open to anything and everything. You never know what might work for you.
For example: you don't want to show off your legs, so in your mind, you have a length or style that you reject before you even try it on. TRY IT ALL ON first. Then decide if your legs work or not. But, do not avoid a style based on your fear.
STOP HOLDING YOURSELF BACK.
Pain Point #1: Money
When you don't shop a lot, you are not familiar with how much things cost, or why they cost what they cost. As with anything, you get what you pay for.
So set a budget. Shop within that budget and buy what FITS your body and your budget. There is something for every body type, and every budget.
When it comes to evening wear – it may seem frivolous to spend a lot money on a one-time occasion.
But think of it this way: if you have a child in your life getting married, so are all their friends. Chances are, you will be invited as "parent friends" to a ton of weddings in the next few years. You can wear a gown many times.
If it's too formal, after your son's wedding, you can change the length of the dress, add a sleeve, alter it to change the style for a different look. NOT NECESSARY TO BUY A NEW OUTFIT FOR EVERY OCCASION. Please.
Second-hand or special occasion rental is always a great idea!
Putting the Look Together:
The Dress
Shapewear
Shoes
Jewelry
Evening Bag*
Possibly a wrap or a coat
*Do not assume you can ask your husband to hold your lipstick, phone and credit card in their suit pockets. A bag is part of the outfit, and you need your stuff with you. All night. Not having a fashionable, function evening bag is a major FASHION CRIME. #notnegotiable
How to Shop for the Outfit:
You must shop in person: fondle the fabric, try things on, take your high heels, wear the shapewear. At the very least, learn what does not fit you, so you can shop for what does fit and looks bet on you. Is it itchy? Does it stretch? Is a size 10 the same for one brand, and different for another? GO. IN. PERSON.
Dress brands to consider:
Tom and Linda Platt
Bagley Mischka
Mac Dougal
Black Halo
Teri Jon
Chiara Boni
Zac Posen
Consider shapewear: Do you need a strapless bra? Do you need something around your tummy? This is the first place to start.
Do not shop only online. You will slow down the process. Try on in-store first. Know your fit and favorite brands. THEN you can order online, or shop for sale items.
Please go to a store and ask for help. A qualified in-store person can change your life.
Timing:
Do not shop too early. You will over-shop. There will be too many decisions. Buy a dress for the season you need. Mothers' of the Groom can start about 3-5 months in advance for your season. Trust Holly on this. Save yourself some brain cells. The decision will be easier if you focus on the timing.
Note: The newness wears off if you buy it too far out.
Find Something New and Unpredictable:
Do not fall into the trap of "mother." You are not required to wear lace, or a cape or a complete body-covering. Level up! Don't be predicable. Do not buy an old lady dress!
Find a dress that is dependent on why type of wedding it is, and is nicer than something you would normally wear.
If you son's wedding is black tie: you can wear something beaded or sequined, or a midi-dress.
If it is at 2 o'clock in the afternoon, those options are out.
There are a lot of factors at play for the time of day or location for wedding. So Holly's best advice here is to ask for help! What is the expectation? What is everyone else wearing? Do your research.
In conclusion: Out of all the dresses in the universe, there's one out there for you. You can send Holly a DM or follow her on Pinterest for ways to make this very special event fun and easy, comfortable and stylish.
She is right there with you! You are not alone! Ask for help.
And Mazel Tov on passing your perfect son onto someone else to manage! Ha!
Xoxo - The only Holly you need to know
The 2023 Academy Awards just happened, so Holly is back this week to discuss Red Carpet fashions with "just a few comments and opinions," because who would we be if your favorite personal stylist didn't give her opinion on Hollywood's biggest night?
Duh, that is why we are here! #Helloooooo
In this episode, Holly takes us through her favorite hits and misses on the 2023 Red Carpet, helping you understand what the stars are wearing, so you can learn how this type of high fashion will translate and trickle down to regular everyday folks.
In general, the Oscars do not aim for the outrageous or wacky factor like we see for the Met Gala or the Grammys. This is the absolute highest honor in the film industry. Traditionally, the Academy Awards Red Carpet is where the world's most prestigious stars present themselves in the way they'll be remembered decades from now. And, at least this year, most people understood the assignment.
But hold on a minute! Did you know that in 2023, the "Red Carpet" is not actually red anymore?(We are still calling it the "Red Carpet" for this episode, however.)
So, fun fact:
The New York Times recently quoted a big-time celebrity event planner, Mandy Weiss, and she said the color of the red carpets has changed because of fashion. It must match the dresses, and the color red just really clashes. The carpet has been red since 1961, back when it was all about a star's movie and what role they were nominated for.
Now it's all about what the stars are wearing and which designer they are wearing. The New York Times states that, in fact, event planners say trends and carpet colors now correlate with the trends on the runways. "It all goes back to fashion and style and trendsetting," says Mrs. Weiss. The carpet should reflect the fashion that's going to walk down the carpet and not fight with it.
So, this year it was called the Champagne Carpet. Alrighty then. We can roll with it.
HOLLY'S TOP PICKS:
Halle Berry
Halle wore a stunning angelic white haltered gown by Tamara Ralph with a thigh-high slit, a midsection cutout, and a flowing skirt. But the most notable aspect of the look was the shimmery pink rose appliqués placed delicately across the neck and at her hip.
Honey, that slit up the leg! We mean, we literally couldn't tell she if had underwear on. That's how high it was...and speaking of her legs, she sure does have the legs pull off this dress. She was absolute perfection.
Michelle Yeoh
Continuing with the white trend, Michelle Yeoh made history when she won the award for Best Actress at the Oscars, becoming the first Asian woman to take home the prize. It had already been a hugely successful award season for the actress, not just in terms of recognition, but also when it came to her red-carpet style.
But, when it came to deciding what to wear for the biggest night of them all, Yeoh turned to Dior and creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri, who created a beautiful feathered white gown especially for her.
This dress initially may look like just a lot of fabric, maybe even like a bridal gown. However, it was handmade by Dior Haute Couture atelier – featured waves of feathers in ivory silk organza. It had a sleeveless illusion top which made her dress look strapless from far away but wasn't. When you take a closer look, you can see the illusion part which is a netting. Added with diamond earrings, her hair style, and her diamond jewelry, she was next level! She is just stunningly, remarkably gorgeous at 60 years old. We had to look that up! She's completely fabulous.
Emily Blunt
Blunt matched a form-fitting, off-the-shoulder Valentino dress with a white clutch that was adorned with pearls and a silver appliqué to keep the outfit monochrome. She added hanging, embellished earrings to her stylish updo of backswept hair.
Blunt showed that an off-the-shoulder column dress, done right, can be perfection. The understated gown got a dollop of bling courtesy of Blunt's Judith Leiber envelope clutch and a double dose of pink perfection via a pair of Chopard chandelier earrings. DYING over the earrings.
When Holly says "off the shoulder," it was boob level, low, low off-the-shoulder. But she is so beautiful. You can see how gorgeous her skin is. And those gorgeous earrings! She had very, very natural makeup. She was just glowing and effortlessly chic.
Mindy Kaling
One of Holly's top looks of the night in custom Vera Wang was Mindy Kaling. She was someone who made Holly fall out of her chair! Never have we seen her look so beautiful and elegant. The custom Vera Wang white dress featured off-the-shoulder sleeves and a mesh Illusion with white boning bodice. So unexpected and fashion forward! Her hair was simply slicked back and effortless. She just looked stunning, stunning, stunning. #NEXTLEVEL
Eva Longoria
Wowza. Speaking of wowza, and we mean wowza! Eva Longoria in her Zuhair Murad couture beaded deep V-neck gown just brought a level of elegance that very, very few can achieve successfully pull off. This dress was made for her - even though this dress was a disco ball. (Those were her words, not ours.) But a chic disco ball.
But it didn't look like a disco ball, and it was not too much on her, even though she is a bit "vertically challenged." She is not tall. She is a very petite and small person, but she just looked like a supermodel and this dress.
TREND ALERT:
Longoria's dress was a very sexy dress and with the mirrors on it, which has been a trend that we've seen a for a few seasons now. Normal people can add this trend in simple ways: on a sweater or jeans, a sweatshirt, or just on a handbag.
Instead of sequins, it's like wearing tiny, little mirrors. This look, in small doses, can easily trickle down for styles for us regular people.
Sofia Carson
Dressed in Giambattista Valli Haute Couture, what looks like a gown is actually a custom white draped silk-chiffon off-shoulder crop-top featuring a twisted cut-out bodice paired with an asymmetrical waist ball gown skirt.
Sofia styled her look with a Chopard necklace featuring seven octagonal shaped emeralds totaling 122.49-carats along with 92.57-carats of pear-shaped, marquise cut, baguette cut and round shaped diamonds set in Fairmined-certified white gold jewelry from the Haute Joaillerie Collection. www.chopard.com O.M.G.
Everybody was talking about this necklace. It looked like something you see in a museum. This necklace...absolutely unreal! She must have had security guards around her by the 1000s. We mean, she probably couldn't pee that night by herself, right??
Tems
For the Oscars, Tems (the Grammy-winning Nigerian artist—born Temilade Openiyi— who is the first African woman to have five Billboard hits) selected a custom white sculptural gown from Ukrainian brand Lever Couture's AW22 Leleka Couture collection, a look that Tems described as "outside the box."
She wore the dreamy white gown with metallic silver eyeliner and cocoa-lined lips that complimented the overall futuristic tone of the outfit.
It had this big structure over her head that was on-theme and ahead of the fashion curve. So, it was not her fault that they sat her in the middle of a row, and no one could see around her. Fashion first, damn it! Move her to a better seat!
Michelle Williams
The actress, who was nominated in the Best Actress in a Leading Role category for her work in The Fabelmans, arrived at the 95th annual awards ceremony in an all-white Chanel couture look.
The dress was a little mature for her, and felt like somebody much, much older could have worn because it was strapless, with netting over the top of it - like when you don't want to show your arms or shoulders.
Holly was just a little surprised, because she could have gotten away with something much more avant-garde.
Ariana DeBose
She looked stunning, arriving at the 95th Academy Awards in a white Atelier Versace gown with all-over silver embellishments, featuring a sexy deep V at the front and a thigh-high slit leg. She paired the dazzling number with silver heeled sandals, and diamond jewels.
Zoe Salanda
For Zoe Saldana, the 2023 Oscars presented an opportunity to join the sustainability discussion and incorporate practices into her life — starting with the pinnacle red carpet.
As an ambassador for Suzy Amis Cameron's RCGD Global, the Academy's official sustainability partner, and an awards presenter, the Avatar: The Way of Water star accessorized a Fall 2022 Fendi Couture mesh and lace-paneled slip-gown with vintage Cartier jewels.
It was not over the top. It was very effortlessly chic and simple. This was the perfect way to represent the sustainability movement, standing up for the re-wear, reuse and recycle effort.
Monica Barbaro
Barbaro arrived wearing an elegant Elie Saab Haute Couture gown. The California native looked stunning in the dress that featured a plunging neckline and a deep purple front-tie skirt with a velvet bow in the front. Sexy yet so incredibly classy!
When she was being interviewed, she stated how incredibly grateful she was to Elie Saab and the showroom and the team to be given this dress, because even before she even made it in the movie industry, and nobody knew who she was, they were supporting her and loaning her dresses.
So good for them! Good on Elie Saab for keeping the faith!
Florence Pugh
The Don't Worry Darling star arrived on the Oscars carpet wearing Valentino. Her jaw-dropping outfit featured a black minidress with pockets shrouded by a draping off-the-shoulder cape in a creamy grayish-beige hue.
A dramatic cape ebbed out from the pleated bodice into cloudlike poof sleeves and a long train. She finished the look with black platform heels, a structural abstract diamond necklace, sparkling pink drop earrings, and a black bow in her hair.
The whole thing opened at the bust, like an empire waist. You could see her legs and it flowed like a train behind her.
Holly was just aghast and has never seen anything so daring and unexpected! She tells us she was just dying over this look! Florence is very young. And she has a very edgy, punk vibe. One of Holly's top, top picks of the night!!!
"And I just loved every single bit of it. I want this to trickle down. So, if I have to make this trickle down myself I do not care. God I love this. Did I say that already just saying I'm gonna put this picture under my pillow at night and I'm going to manifest this look for me." – Holly Katz
HONORABLE MENTION
Winnie Harlow
Harlow arrived in a soft yellow archival 2005 Armani Privé couture column dress. Sustainable fashion has really made a statement on the Red.. or excuse us, Champagne Carpet this year as we are seeing celebrities wanting to showcase garments that have already made a statement instead of having a designer make something brand new for them.
She is completely gorgeous in her own right. And she pulled off this look flawlessly. She doesn't need a lot of extras. The very, very light yellow color of the gown looked beautiful with her skin tone.
Elizabeth Olsen
Elizabeth Olsen was a vision as she walked the red (champagne) carpet in a long, black, Givenchy halter gown with a slicked back bun and a red lip. Completely open in the back. Stunner.
Hong Chau
Chau, who is nominated for best supporting actress for her role in "The Whale," walked the red (champagne) carpet at the biggest event of the year in a custom pink Prada gown that featured a nod to her Vietnamese heritage.
The collar of her dress, known in English as a Mandarin collar, is a short and stiff upright collar. It's popular in both Chinese cheongsams (also known as qipao) and Vietnamese dresses known as ao dai. She added this design detail at the last minute.
Malala Yousafzai
The Pakistani female education activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate wore a silver sequined gown by Ralph Lauren with a hood, long sleeves, and a cinched detail on one side of the waist. She accessorized only with a large silver diamond ring and a gold ring with a large emerald from Santi Jewels, and wore minimal makeup, and added a pop of color with a bright red lip. HOLLY'S TOP LOOK OF THE NIGHT!
NO SNAPS
Ruth E. Carter
Carter, who in 2019 became the first Black person to win the Oscar for costume design for her work on Marvel's "Black Panther," was recognized for the film's sequel, "Wakanda Forever." She is a master at costume design, but she might have had a "Sound of Music" moment, as it looks like she was wearing the drapes. #DAMN
The dress was just a lot, and really swallowed her. It was a bright yellow strapless gown, but you couldn't see her body shape. This was a no-no for Holly.
Jennifer Connelly
Connelly arrived in a black, off-the-shoulder Louis Vuitton column gown with a beaded triangle-shaped embroidery panel that came literally all the way up to her chin. To Holly, it looked like a spaceship. This dress was probably stunning in person, but, um, no girl! No snaps. Absolute the worst dressed.
That's all for now, folks! We could go on and on and on. Did we get it right? Did we get it wrong? We want to hear your comments! We hope you enjoyed this episode, and Holly will be dreaming and scheming about her top picks!

Atlanta Designer Spotlight Alert! This week we have Yolanda White; founder of Dayo Women. Established in 2018, Dayo Women is the premier destination for stylish, modern women who want to find high-quality, elegant women's loungewear. Join us this week to learn how this powerhouse executive went from the C-Suite to designing loungewear and the incredible results of her journey.
"It's time to feel beautiful, powerful, and comfortable at home. No more t-shirts, constricting lace, boring pajamas, or hubby's clothes… Dayo is for women!!"
With a team of outstanding women from around the world, Dayo was created to redefine loungewear with new silhouettes, fabrics, and construction to allow women to move with comfort, style, and versatility to fit any mood. Being introduced to Yolanda, Holly wanted to know about this brand and how she could get in these hot pajamas as quickly as possible. The fabrics are soft as soft can be, tencel some mixed with lycel, all made in Italy. And if that isn't fabulous enough, Dayo's exquisite fabrics are durable and machine washable – using sustainable and natural fabrics – and you know those are Holly's favorite words!
With exactly zero fashion design experience, Yolanda jumped on this idea as she needed functional, easy clothing to wear multiple ways both in and out of the house. She loves to celebrate women, their changing bodies and helping women understand that anyone can look and feel beautiful.
"One insight that really drove me is, as women, we show up beautifully put together for strangers. And when it's time for us to show up for ourselves, we don't."
Much of the research for her designs came from actually asking her girlfriends what they loved about their own bodies. What areas they were challenged by. Moms are at home; they are moving, cleaning, running errands and then back at home when someone may knock on the door, and they must open it up and face whomever is standing there. Even if it's the Amazon delivery man, it can be all about comfort at home, but don't give in to sloppy.
On her website you will find under the "Styling Room" styling tips with dozens of different ways to wear her elements versi scarf, her wrap top, the lounge bra band and so much more. You can count on Dayo Women to really understand what women need during their downtime to feel both comfortable and stylish.
In addition to her clothing line, she curates women's discussion panels to present ideas about living with a limitless mindset, and pop-ups called "Self-Love Saturdays," and many other unique events to celebrate Women's History Month. She is sharing the love, y'all – and we are here for it!
The Dayo Dresses can also be styled many ways and can give you the elegance of a dress with the comfort of soft fabrics, adjustable sleeves, different ways to tie them and show off your favorite parts. Can we add one more piece of genius? POCKETS!! Pockets, people. Because women need a damn pocket. #FACTS
