Sources for Podcast #1: “Torture and Introduction”
German Crespo’s imprisonment and torture:
German speaks is an edited portion of an interview with German on 8/11/19
The torture and “Amazing Grace” portion of the story comes from notes I have taken from listening German tell the story to church work teams I would often ask him to tell the story to the teams I was leading. I have heard him tell that portion of the story at least 5 times.
Independent verification of the story:
As mentioned by German, another Methodist, Benjamin Peredes, was imprisoned with him. I had the opportunity to interview Benjamin some 20 years after I had originally heard this story from German. I didn’t tell Benjamin what I knew of that time and just allowed him to describe his time and occasionally asked if German was in prison also. Benjamin confirmed that German (and he) were tortured and they had spoken while in prison about the ‘Bible was our weapon’ against the dictatorship.
German has heard the podcast and confirmed the accuracy of it. You can also hear his commentary about the podcast on the link on this website.
Bishop Eugenio Poma and the decision to ‘evangelize’ the U.S.
This comes from notes I took on my first trip to Bolivia in 1987.
Bishop Poma has frequently confirmed the truth of that story
Independent verification of the story
Crespo was at the meeting that discussed this and confirms the story.
