X marks the spot, LEAPFEST returns to RI on Saturday August 3rd for this annual international competition, now in its 42nd year. Major Jeff Nelson (RIARNG) joins us to detail the event. He encourages everyone to come to Adams Family Farm in Exeter RI and enjoy the competition which is FREE and open to the public. They've set aside an area for viewing that's suitable for groups to sit comfortably in the shade as teams of 4 jumpers from 17 countries and the USA compete, the most countries ever competing, and the first time having more International Teams versus US Teams. You can watch them exit from a Chinook helicopter at an altitude of 1500 feet using a parachute, attempting to land closest to an orange X on the ground, for the best time. "The purpose of the competition is to promote the camaraderie and Esprit de Corps of the Airborne Soldier through international competition." Another first of significance, the 173rd Airborne Division (Vincenza Italy-US base) all female team joins the competition. All eyes will be on the United Kingdom as their 2023 championship team returns to defend their title. At a time when Paris has the Olympics, RI has LEAPFEST for global games!
