A Halloween camping prank becomes real wilderness terror when a monster-mask joke gives way to a towering creature hunting four friends through the forest.
The narrator expects an easy October 30 hiking trip with Jolene, Dawn, and Rose: a quiet state-park campsite, a stack of books, and Halloween fun far from home. A new neck-worn reading light is just a convenient way to keep reading after dark. Jolene’s monster-mask ambush also seems harmless—especially when it inspires a plan to frighten the others.
Then screams tear through the woods, the campsite is destroyed, and an enormous fur-covered creature begins stalking the group. With darkness swallowing the trail and every prank suddenly impossible to trust, an ordinary book light, pepper spray, and a small knife become their only tools for survival. This narrated creature-feature blends Halloween suspense, a camping trip gone wrong, friendship under pressure, and the terrifying realization that the thing outside the tent is not wearing a costume.
The reading light matters because it is an ordinary item established before the danger. In a forest where masks, pranks, and real creatures become difficult to distinguish, a dependable beam close to the body gives the narrator one small advantage after the campsite and group’s assumptions collapse.
Michael Kelso’s story keeps the four friends and their improvised tools at the center rather than naming the creature too quickly. The episode is wilderness survival horror about friendship under pressure, the consequences of a practical joke, and the moment an October camping trip proves that something much larger than a person is moving beyond the tent.
