Ed Gein’s Plainfield, Wisconsin, farmhouse concealed grave robbery, murder, and objects made from human remains—crimes that reshaped American horror fiction.

Gein grew up under the control of his mother Augusta, whose extreme religious teachings portrayed women and sexuality as corrupt. After the deaths of his closest family members, he lived alone on the farm and began exhuming recently buried women. He removed bodies and used skin and bones to create masks, clothing, containers, and household objects.

Terrifying & True follows the 1957 disappearance of hardware-store owner Bernice Worden, whose last sales receipt led investigators to Gein. Inside the farmhouse they found Worden’s body and evidence connected to cemetery thefts and the earlier disappearance of tavern owner Mary Hogan. Gein admitted killing both women, although his mental competency and legal insanity shaped the court proceedings and his confinement in psychiatric institutions.

The episode distinguishes the historical crimes from the movies they influenced. Psycho’s Norman Bates, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre’s Leatherface, and The Silence of the Lambs’ Buffalo Bill borrowed different elements from Gein, but none is a literal retelling of his life. Gein was not the prolific chainsaw-wielding serial killer of popular memory; the documented story is smaller in victim count and more disturbing in what it reveals about isolation, desecration, and the transformation of a real case into horror mythology.

Stephen Loring searches Burma for a missing friend and follows temple bells into a jungle ruin ruled by a knife-wielding high priestess.

Campbell’s last letter was posted from Mandalay, but local knowledge points Loring south toward Pugan and the ancient shrines his friend had been studying. Mung Ba, the devoted Burmese guide who worked for Campbell, arrives with a carefully repeated invitation to make the difficult river journey. The deeper Loring travels, the more warnings he hears about the evil eye and the power fear can give it.

At Campbell’s hut, papers and strange behavior suggest that the missing man reached something he did not understand. Temple bells call through the night, Mung Ba tries to keep Loring from answering them, and the guide’s death leaves the newcomer alone on the path to the ruins. There he finds Campbell, a cult, and a beautiful priestess whose gaze and raised knife make belief itself a matter of survival.

“The Eye of Evil” combines lost-expedition mystery, Burmese jungle adventure, forbidden worship, and supernatural suggestion. The story asks whether the evil eye has literal power or whether terror and obsession can make human beings carry out its curse without magic.

Laura has twenty-two minutes to survive a ghostly lumberjack with an axe inside an isolated Pacific Northwest ranger station.

Her fiancé Allen is already dead, his proposal hike ended by a century-old apparition near the remains of an abandoned logging camp. Bear spray passed harmlessly through the attacker. Now Laura is injured, hiding in a supply trailer, and clinging to a 911 dispatcher’s estimate that an officer can reach her before the lumberjack does.

Terrifying & True maps the region commonly drawn between Miami, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico, then follows the disappearances that built its reputation. The USS Cyclops vanished in 1918 with more than 300 people aboard and no confirmed wreckage. In 1945, five Navy bombers known as Flight 19 became disoriented during a training mission, while a PBM Mariner sent to search for them was also lost.

The episode examines how later writers grouped unrelated accidents into a single paranormal zone. Christopher Columbus’s reported compass observations, stories of the Sargasso Sea, sudden storms, the Gulf Stream, navigational error, mechanical failure, and difficult search conditions all became ingredients in a mystery larger than the evidence.

Fleeing New York after murdering his wife, John Thompson picks up a hitchhiker who looks exactly like the woman he killed.

John crosses the George Washington Bridge in a blue coupe, planning to leave his old life behind and start over in the West. A young woman named Anne waits beside the New Jersey highway. She calls him Johnny, requests “Stardust” on the radio, and awakens a memory he is desperate to suppress. When a struggle at the wheel causes a crash, John believes he has killed her—only for the body to vanish.

The passenger reappears farther along the road. John attacks her again with a wrench, weights the corpse with his tools, and drops it from a bridge into a stream. Still she runs beside the car through the thunderstorm, asking whether he is tired of the road away from her. A solo camper follows blood from an abandoned fire and discovers an antlered wilderness monster powerful enough to battle a bear—and determined to follow him home.

Terrifying screams shatter the first night of a remote camping trip, but daylight makes the danger feel easier to dismiss.
