Still having an uphill battle with LFOs, but I will beat them into submission.

It doesn't sound great on cheap speakers or as an mp3; I think I rely on bass too much that doesn't convert well. Although when I listen to professional tracks on cheap speakers or as mp3s they still sound decent, even when they're missing the depth they have in headphones. I'm not sure what their secrets are XD

This week I went back to the chillstep / psydub vibes.

At first I wanted to make something with a more broken rhythm in a weird bpm, which is not something I usually do, but of course along the way the track started changing and taking me somewhere else, love that.

When I reached the middle break I had to decide where to take it next — what kind of mood, country, instrument, etc. — and somehow I ended up in Japan again. I’m really fascinated by the sounds and instruments from that part of the world, so the koto felt like the right direction for the track.

The vocal was a bit more of a random shot. I really liked this kind of voice, somewhere between R&B and… honestly I don’t even know what else 😄 But I like fusions and trying to fit things together that maybe shouldn’t normally work together.

In the end I think it came out pretty well and has its own little identity.

When her magical abilities wane, the old sage knows it's time to go to the cave. Its powers can help restore her back to her former self. The only problem is that each trip requires venturing deeper into the cave's dark and mysterious tunnels. And her memory hasn't been the best lately. But she has a plan: she'll tie one end of a long string to a rock at the entrance and the other end to her waist. That will guarantee her safe return! Right?

### Diary and chatter

Howdy, friends! I'm using this song as a simultaneous submission for Week 32 of Weekly Beats 2026 and also for the M8 Community Jam #57, whose theme was "Sorcery II".

This week I got back into my piano lessons, which was great after an almost 2-month hiatus. It's funny to notice how some things have stuck with me and others have SUPER DUPER not. Talking to my instructor, I said something along the lines of "This time off showed me why I really do need lessons. Without them, I just don't sit down and practice." I also got back on the banjo recently, but it's still going super slowly. Again, mainly due to my lack of practice. But it's still been fun!

I'm also happy that I've been able to comment on some songs on WB and I'm slowly catching up with OOOOOOLD rounds of the M8CJ.

Anyways, looking forward to y'all's musical creations!!!

### Production details

I started this one off while noodling on fancy Yamaha keyboard at a Guitar Center after my banjo lesson. Scrolling through the synth's presets, I found this bell instrument that sounded super pretty, and shortly thereafter I came up with the two snippets which became the backbone of the song, played on tracks 1 and 2 from row 03 onwards. I don't know why, but the stuff that's playing on track 1 sounds a bit medieval to my ears. And while coming up with the snippet from track 2, I felt like I ended up at least partially ripping off Clotho, from Columns on Game Gear.

I later tried to come up with cool and fun variations on the theme or things to add in, but nothing was coming to me. I just really liked the sound of this being really bare and simple, so I left it basically as it was. The only real new part was the addition of a bass voice.

Oh, also, this was one of the first times I've really messed around with the FM Synth, trying to dial in a specific sound, and I really like where I arrived with the sound design! What I came up with is super primitive, but still sounds pretty.

Trying to do some dark, polymetric weirdness on the M8. It's...not focussed enough. Voice is from a 1959 educational short called Lunchroom Manners.

I think the trick is not to mess with the percussion too much so at least one element can be used as an anchor, and I super didn't do that. A standard 4-on-the-floor would have helped in retrospect. I think the most consistent element is the bassline, so concentrate on that as a sort of life preserver.

Again, at least it's short!
