  • Week 24 - Continuous Nonlinearities - Machines build memories
Inspired by an ad on the subway reading "Where old machines build new memories", about Black Creek Pioneer Village. I don't usually do vocal work but this gave me something interesting to work with.
Mostly Pulsar-23 and Digitakt, with Prophet for the arpeggiated notes and Ensoniq ESQ-1 for the pads. Originally I had some guitar parts adding noise but it was too much, and I found I liked it better without them. But: without them it was a little too empty. So I recorded some poorly-grounded hisses and noise through my Lossy pedal for a bit of texture. And ran out of time.
I like a lot about this but I feel like there's still something missing or some bit of work that is still needed. Not sure what yet but again, I've run out of time, so this is the version.

  • Week 24 - Stenny - The Dirt Beckons
Back to making pieces that aren’t too haphazard! Not much to this one - just wanted to make something tasty and existential. Had some interesting synths I’d thrown together, and after listening to Lorn (Tempered By Your Love specifically), I was inspired to add a few more effects to one of them and ended up with the hulking monstrosity you hear at the end of the piece. Lots of samples in the percussion and synths, including my cat's little noises, recordings from a protest, my electric toothbrush, and miscellaneous drawers and banging noises. Mixing is a little... so-so still. My fault for always saving that for the very very end. Some of the mids are cluttered. That being said, I guess lately it's more been the content than the quality I've focused on? Hope you enjoy it either way!

  • Week 24 - scy - Entropy
Today I ran into a Deluge bug with the arp getting stuck (never had that before), and then subsequently ran out of time. Considering that, the track is still kinda solid, but yeah.

  • Week 24 - Paisleyfrog - 2x4
Let's make something with a new instrument.
Picture is from Arizona. Music sounded southwest, so I went with it.
This weekend was the annual Woodworking Weekend - my friends and I have been getting together for 20+ years to build weird stuff, eat good food, and have a good time. The weekend has changed over the years, but it's always been one of my favorite gatherings of the year.
I've built an assortment of things over the years, frequently musical instruments. I was casting about for what to make this year, and then remembered...I've been wanting to make a lap steel for the longest time! Had all the parts in various project boxes, so I gathered stuff up and cobbled one together, Jack White style a la It Might Get Loud. Mine's actually a bit fancier in that it has three strings and actual tuners...but it's still just a slab of wood (which is where the title came from). All guitar sounds are the lap steel. Beginning is recorded acoustically (it's pretty loud for having no resonating chamber!), and the rest is plugged in.
Ran way late for time this week (life stays busy), so just cobbled this riff together on Sunday afternoon - whole thing came together in a couple hours. Bassline isn't quite right in spots, mix is maybe a little rough, and the whole thing is pretty trashy...but I had fun :)
How did I not realize I did 2x4 on week 24?!?

  • Week 24 - FardyCakes - Blue Pasta
Wanted to get a lot further along with this one than I ultimately did, but it's time to move onto the next one.  Composed on the Dirty Wave m8 under non-ideal circumstances, but got it out there.  Want to add some more instrumentation eventually.  I'll get there.  Just keepin' on.

  • Week 24 - gify - Synthpop in the Rain
Rainy day, so I got to procrastinate instead of doing all my chores (again) and make synthpop instead!
I ran my Behringer CAT through the 303's filter and used that as the starting point. I got a Behringer ADA8200 this week, which gave me 8 extra inputs, so I can route more synths into Bitwig at the same time. Got to use all the gear on my desk at the same time finally! :D
The downside is having extra unused inputs is probably bad for the GAS.... ;)
I spent a lot of time trying to get the drums to sound nice and punchy. I think it turned out OK, but we'll see tomorrow when my ears have rested, lol. I probably should have spent more time making variations on the drum patterns and fills, which is something I need to get into a better habit of.
    Anyways, enjoy the synthpop doots!

  • Week 24 - tired_moniker - tired_wb26_24
Was messing around a bunch with the external instrument settings on the M8 and realized I can plug an electric guitar directly in and get a serviceable distorted tone out of it with enough tweaks (which will be sick for brainstorming on the go!)
In the midst of that, came up with the initial melody and ended up fleshing it out without any guitar in the final
Wasn't too thrilled with it until I found a nice synth sample to loop as some background noise (I usually leave track 7 for the "glue" like that) which is my favorite thing about this track
