  • Week 24 - willdasilvatunes - learn 2 grow
sunday already?! this is probably the weekly beat that i'm the least proud of; I just felt blah about it throughout making it. I was originally going to make it longer but i didnt have the time nor energy :( I definitely want to focus some time writing jungle for a bit longer because I do enjoy it! either way, this is a learning experience for me so the title is pretty apt. thanks all! <3

  • Week 24 - Tomatron.Jones - Something Wicked This Way Comes
I had a very busy week crunching to record bass and synth for my band Atomic Pines to send off for mixing. I found a pretty good flow recording and throwing ideas over to the band lead. Eventually I had created a sort of 'sample pack' of parts and sounds. I ended up using some of those for this beat. All sounds besides the kick and sub-bass are made my Korg Minilogue and Moog Subphatty. With the recordings I created a slow, dark, ambient piece inline with Abul Mograd or a new artist I recently discovered, Aho Saan. Lots of dark, heavy, looped synths and crazy automation.
The name is spontaneous, just because the track is so slow and brooding and ominous.
    * Synths recorded from Korg Minilogue and Moog Subphatty
    * Kick from Ableton drum kit
    * Transit, Valhalla, Ableton stock plugins
    * Gullfoss + Izotope Elements for master
Total time: 4 hours (many more hours recording the parts...)

  • Week 24 - Janky Jams - Electron Shuffle
Alright, second track with the M8. Sure isn't putting any pressure on me to immediately release stuff when I'm still learning how this damn thing works :D
This week I've got something a little housey for you, with a bit of a headnoddy groove. Sequenced on the M8, multitracked in Ableton, and routed through a little Eurorack skiff for external FX and my beloved Bohm kick drum + ducking. In addition, the M8 also sequences the Knobula Monumatic via MIDI as one of the voices. Other drum samples are from various Maschine expansion packs.
Hope you enjoy! Feedback and criticism are very welcome!

  • Week 24 - muhamor - Unwanted guests (BLUE SANDWICH)
    Hello!
    › Production notes‹ Production notes
Speedy speed trash this week. I didn't work on music until Sunday morning, so this is a result of my mad scramble to get something done. Total work time is about 3 hours. I had grand inspiration to do another trance track or maybe something high bpm, but it's hard to do something new in a short amount of time. So I messed around with a half-time beat at 150bpm, and the end result is maybe complextro-ish bass-trap?
The most interesting production technique in this is I've been messing around with randomly switching up instruments to get more variation in the sounds. For example, I'll make 3-5 copies of my high-hat instrument, each with a different sample, and then I'll put an RNL command to the right of the instrument to randomly choose one of the samples. I also did this with the shifting bass instruments in the last section.
I'm also realizing that having breaks in between working on music. I tend to get tunnel vision on a sound/measure when I'm working on it; and then I get bored and tired with it. I've seen chatter about how it's important to reset your ears, and this feels very apt.
Hope your week is going well!

  • Week 24 - MRDRCAT - Bot Roast
This is the noise going through my head when I scroll through a modern-day social media platform and all the posts are very obviously ragebait bots posting and replying to each other to monetise clicks. Dead internet is upon us.
More speedtrash. I just wanted something noisy. The percussion is all Perkons from Mars (love that sample pack); the laugh and vocal snippets are from a State Department seminar on entrepreneurship (for some reason) and the New York interview is a random TikTok someone reposted after New York won some sports game recently. Limiter and OTT cranked higher than I usually do because it felt good.
Honestly, you really don't have to listen to this but at least it's short.

  • Week 24 - Dustsucker - Running Hot
Keep it together just a little longer, we're almost there.
› Notes‹ NotesAll M8 synthesis, all the way, no samples. Bit of extra smashy smashy mastering in Logic because why not.
This past week I've been looking into all kinds of new and old trackers for inspiration. Messed around in LSDJ a while, jammed in FMS and even dipped a toe in the new NES tracker by Laamaa. All amazing in their own way. However, on saturday evening I picked up my M8 again, felt immediately at home and made the the main bass motif for this one. Extended it into a full track on sunday evening.
The bass is pretty weird. It is the plucked engine playing the lowest possible note. This results in a rhythmic pulse, which at 124 bpm is a 16h note stutter. The actual root note comes from the hi-pass filter with the resonance maxed out. Because of plucked, it's slightly different every time a note is played, which gave it this unruly and unpredictable vibe. This also meant I had immediately painted myself into a corner: I had to write bass lines by adjusting the filter frequency and it didn't match with traditional tuning.. Doh!
Added a bunch of stuff on top, mostly trying to keep the tension rising with shepard-ish tones and a bunch of stuttering and sputtering. I'm pretty happy with how this one turned out. I managed to squeeze a couple of unusual production tricks in there which made me happy.

  • Week 24 - mzunguko - ALIVE
Another rushed one, didn't get everything I wanted in (3 separate uploads), but I am just glad I have found time to get anything "done". I just don't get to explore much, my gear is gathering dust as I scan my presets for sounds, adjust a filter, light automation, and fire out a track. As always so glad you found this space and took a listen.
