this is mostly improvised.

i've been thinking alot about jonathan mann. he is one of my favorite songwriter and i will never be able to listen to every song he wrote. being behind the song-a-day project it is really an endless stream of music. nothing more inspiring to me.

there is this amazing interview in a wheezywaiter video in which jonathan mann said the people that fail at song-a-day are the people who can't half-ass something.

this song this week is not just half-assed but probably even less.

i've been working so much on music for so much music and i will be working on so much music for so many people soon. right now it is really like a tiny break. i won't stop. i'll never stop but there are for sure weeks were showing up, saying hi and what up and leaving just to heat up some leftover noodles you had in the fridge.

Math and I have never really gotten along, but somehow this week's track turned out to be a pretty simple equation:

("find a cool percussive loop" + "write a bassline" + "throw a kick on it" + "add some synths") / "find a funny vocal sample" + "add some FX" = "Quick n' Dirty Murda"

So, two tired dads walk into a bar...

This week DadBoy and I did a collab! I was honestly a bit afraid that I wouldn't have the time to do a collab, but it all went so quick :D.

DadBoy sent me something that was already pretty amazing (the backbone to the whole track). I added bits and pieces, tweaked some things. Then DadBoy tweaked some more, a bit of back and forth, and ultimately DadBoy added some magic sauce and it was done! That was super fun and very pleasant.

I am very thankful for this collab and excited about the result. I hope you like it too! If you do, then obviously give DadBoy some love too. :)

As the title states, this week's track is a collaboration with WahSp (make sure to show him some love, too!), and I know I'm biased, but I am so pleased with how this track came out.

I first encountered WahSp here and there on the M8 discord, and then he bought some of my stuff on bandcamp and sent me a super kind message (almost exactly a year ago, funnily enough). I knew from the get-go that he's a kind and cool dude. If that wasn't enough, getting to listen to his stuff over the last 9 months, he's crazy talented, too! We have a lot of alignment in the kind of music we like, so it seemed like a natural fit to collaborate. We're both pretty busy, so we weren't even sure we'd finish the track this week, but once it started to take shape we were both pretty jazzed about it and couldn't wait!

This started with a patch from the TEO-5 (the arp) sampled into the M8. There are two versions of it: one with no sub oscillator (what you hear towards the beginning) and a fuller one with a sub oscillator (what you hear during the "verse"). I put together a simple structure with that, a bass, a little flutey lead for one part, and some basic drums. I thought it had potential and sounded cool, but WahSp really took it to the next level with some awesome synth leads (and some excellent sound design, too!) and some structural changes to fill it out. After that, we mostly just added some slight little variations and tweaked dynamics. I did actually go briefly into the DAW for two parts, where I resampled two sections (the one towards the beginning and at the end - the tape-ish parts), and then I automated a Tape VST to have it transition to/from tape-normal. I rendered the samples with the automations and then threw them back into the M8. All in all, I think this track came out awesome, and I'm super excited about it! Thanks again to WahSp for your awesome ideas and being so great to work with - let's do it again!

You ever write a song that makes you go "Fuck this is hard to play", yeah this little bastard took me 10 takes and I'm only remotely happy with it. Don't get me wrong I love the tune it's just a fucker to sing and eventually I just said "Fuck it, that'll do" lol. It's a song about how a lot of people who I thought were my friends presented themselves as not being my friends when I got married, as the adage goes "You learn who your friends are when you get married" and it's true. This song is a big old middle finger to those people. As always comments welcome, enjoyment compulsory ;)

Tried my best to make a track just using the Digitone II this week, but as soon as I started the mixing process I didnt vibe with the melodic stuff at all, so I just kept the drums and bass. Added some sounds from the Prophet Rev2 and UDO Super 6 through some pedals, and then some textures from the Torso S4.

This one was made on the Dirtywave M8 and with scratching from an MPC1000

The scratching process was a first for me, and seems like it's got heaps of potential, however, building a good collection of scratch fodder, as well as mastering the technique is more than I could do in a week... I'll keep working on it though.
