Super quick rebuild of an Akai MPC (software) beat I made. The mastering process went sideways because I don't get the MPC 2 software yet.

I dumped everything to Ableton and build some kind of interesting landscape using my tried and true Ableton internal FXs.

I really feel like I'm sometimes wasting my time learning another (commercial) tool "just because"...

I purchased the Akai Studio mk2 controller, brand new... because it looked shiny and I don't really get the Maschine controller, so I stupidly thought I would grasp another sequencer by magic.

Don't get me wrong, the software is fine... but I can't stand all that hypercommercial push to buy "expansions" and the "update managers". I haven't still not used more than 10% of Native Instruments Komplete, so... another tool to learn?

I guess I was happier with my really simple Akai MPC 500 with less of everything :)

way back in 2025 Tone "the Wizard" Matrix sent an older instrumental track of his to see if i had any thoughts on the mix. as is often the case with Wizard music, it totally entranced and inspired me and i ended up recording some bass and vocals. we kinda filed it away for our eventual collab EP, and there it sat.

well! we revisited the track to finalize it this week. Tone even added some wonderful backing vocals, and i remixed and mastered the track. i love it so much and hope you do too.

we both posted the same mix for our WB this week, so if you are here first please make sure to pop over and show some love for Thee Tone Matrix.

*oh and the Wizard also took the photo used in the thumbnail!

I took another old 8-bar loop that consisted of a shoegaze guitar sample on top of a drum loop and fleshed it out into a full track that blends from a lot of dark, gritty, synth ambient stuff (similar to Abul Mogard or Aho San) into the shoegaze and back. With some interesting textures and samples of a subway over the whole thing. Kinda ran out of time on this but it's pretty fun. I don't love the lead synth sound and as usual I ran out of time, could have polished it up and added more automation and transitions. But not bad.

* Gullfoss and Ozone for mastering

* Ample use of Transit, Transit 2 plugins
