Hope you are all doing well!

My mother-in-law was in town this past week, we hadn't seen her for a few years so most of our free time was spent with her. Little time left for music.

I've been longing for nature lately, as I have pretty much stayed in the city all summer. So yesterday we took the day to walk around the botanical garden in Montreal. The yearly lantern exposition had just started, which was a nice surprise. Our long walk inspired me to do this contemplative and peaceful track. This is another quick one done from the DAW in a pre-existing project (same one as the last two weeks), using a few VSTs and my outboard filter. I feel like it's good exercise trying to make my head bop using very little.

Well, looks like I have secured a 2 year lease. It's actually got a separate ADU that I can use as a studio so I am looking forward to having a dedicated studio space. I will start moving in a couple of weeks to start this new phase. Once I get settled I have two years to figure out where to grow roots as this is a lot more than I really want to spend long term. I think I am going to take some extended trips outside the US and see if there are some other places I can hang out on a more permanent basis (at least while the dollar still has some value).

Once again still trying to get used to a new daw and tools and seeing what creative directions this takes me. One thing I am not a fan of is drawing notes but all my midi keyboards are packed up so it's what I got. Still haven't picked a portable audio interface so the guitar is packed up for the move kind of a bummer.

And to put the icing on the cake my storage unit got broken into over the weekend and had a bunch of electronics lifted (old computers, a tv and a bunch of micro-controllers and various hobby hardware boards and parts, hard to replace as some of these just aren't made anymore)

Crazy times indeed, still can't believe I am packing up 30+ years of my life and starting over, but hey, the wheel turns and we turn with it.

I was pretty fried this week from life stuff, so this track is a short sketch with some ideas I'd like to push further in the future. I have been pretty averse to writing melodies this year. They're hard -- it's hard to know when my decisions sound good (and also hard to visualize them on the M8). I also have never taken music lessons on anything other than a shakuhachi, so it's not something I have a ton of practice with :)

This week I tried to really focus on writing some sort of melody by thinking more about contour and movement. It took a couple of tries, but I was able to get down the plinky arp-ey thing you hear in the intro. During this process I realized that a melody, much like a vocal sample, can help determine your chord progression and set a lot of the musical decisions for a track. It was a good exercise, and definitely something I need to practice more to build my confidence.

A few other notes:

- In the B-section I tried to make something a bit more varied and glitchy

- thinking more about layering in noise samples to add a bit of complexity to the track
