Another pretty simple track because I'm too busy enjoying summer.

I'm at a hacker camp right now. There are lots of colorful lights already, and the camp hasn't even officially started yet.

Hi friends, hope you're well this week. I can't say it's been a bad week, but it has been a little bit of a mixed bag. Been having to confront some stuff that's not been fun to think or talk about, and I don't know that there's much of an easy fix beyond just living with the hurt for a while and waiting for it to get easier. It's not actually as bad as it sounds, because as much as it hurts and sucks, for the first time I actually have hope that it can feel better (and I'm getting there). This super simple lazy speedtrash ambient feels like it kind of captures that - not good, not bad, not necessarily comfortable, but a little off-kilter and maybe somewhat cathartic? Idk. Anyways, hope you enjoy! Almost at 30 weeks, who can believe it?

Had fun making this one, kick, snare, and hihats were chopped into one shots from three different breaks.  Found a couple loops in splice to sample and manipulate and then somehow I felt this needs some Indian vocals.  The main vocal and second vocal are both sampled off a couple of old 45's my Dad has, by coincidence both vocals sampled happened to be the same singer.  She has an amazing voice, the main vocal roughly translates as "we have sworn to stay together."  Busy Sunday afternoon, finished watching the world cup match, I now only have a few minutes to upload and mix the track (mix sounds off), and now I promised my son I would help him sharpen an axe, mix will have to stay as is.

For this week's track, I decided to revisit my PaulStretch techniques and combine it into IDM.

I took a synth sample into PaulStrectch to create the bed of the track. I then went into Reason, where I added percussion.

Afterwards, I added a few motifs (two that come in and out, one constant) and then built out an additional kick/bass track towards the back half of the track.

After mixing, EQing and dialing in effects, I mastered and exported the track.

It didn't used to be wildfire season, but that's a thing now.

I've been tired lately, everything has felt like work, and I am trying to figure out how to make everything not feel like work all the time. For my songs, this is probably in part because I keep getting new gear and then I need to learn it and figure out how to fit it in with everything else, hah. Such blunder! That being said, the Digitone got returned this week on account of not being enough for me in multiple ways.

Anyway this weekly's beat is pretty last minute-ish, with only a marginal start on Saturday but mostly done in a few hours on Sunday. In an attempt to figure out how to integrate my recently-acquired Tonverk with my Digitakt, I started with that, but the Pulsar-23 quickly got dragged in because my drums were nonsense. Tonverk has this weird problem where it doesn't pay attention to the count-in on my recorder when I am recording, so some melodic parts on it ended up being a bar ahead and I could not figure out why they were weird until after I finished everything. Hopefully that gets fixed soon.

Lead part is Prophet 6 with hand-performed arpeggios, delay help from maybe the best simple delay pedal ever, the Ibanez DE-7. Why is it so good? Unknown; it is a cheap digital delay but performs so far above its paygrade (if it was released today and had modulation built in it would be sold for $400 as a fancy boutique thing, I swear). That part then got put through the OBNE Parting for glitchy weirdness. My human-played arps could be a little tighter, but as it goes, it goes.

So, breakbeats... I've made a few break-containing tracks on the M8 before, in the last few weeks, but this one is the first time I actually manually sliced and chopped a loop to create "custom" breakbeats. I can't believe how easy the M8 makes this... I tried this on so many other platforms in the past and always ran into roadblocks of the tools and functions... and my own willingness to put up with excessive tedium, in some cases.

Hope you enjoy this. It's in 11/4 time, which was a lot of fun to try and wrap my head around. Still a lot more wrapping to do, but I'm quite happy with how this one turned out in the end.

This is all M8, some samples from Maschine Expansions, some I made myself. Multitracked into Ableton, some Reverb added to the pads and a little bit of mastering on the output.

UPDATE: I Have a System (I Swear)

I went back to this two weeks later, and worked on it some more. This new "I Swear" version has more breakbeats, a much tighter structure, and a more melodic tail end section. Hope you enjoy!

After travel last weekend and getting back into the pace of regular life, I had time for one tracking session Saturday night, and some editing Sunday. What this piece tells me...is that after a little time away, I really like playing rhythm guitar. So there's a lot of that going on here, mostly on the neck pickup (center channel), though a bit elsewhere, too.

This is three tracks of PureSalem Mendiola (old version) straight into the UA Volt. There's the usual convolution reverb send (though a little low-end rolloff), and the usual compression/eq/limiting on the stereo mix. Three tracks: one for neck (c), one for bridge (R), and one for both (L) pickups.

The title comes from Deepdale Hause pass (655 m) in the Lake District.
