  • Week 16 - alonemusic - Spark of Life
This is a sad one. Read on only if you are ok with the sads.
    ..
    ..
    ...
    Ok? Here we go:
This week we said goodbye to our oldest cat, Aki, who was 17, who very suddenly took a turn on Monday, and we put him to rest on Thursday, at home with us.
We'd kind of suspected this year would be his last, but it still hit me like an absolute ton of bricks, and I've had a lump in my throat every day since.
I didn't think I'd be up for making a track, but after a day or so, it felt almost like the right thing to do. Weekly Beats is almost a diary for me in many ways, I often remember the sights, sounds, smells and feelings when listening back to older tracks.
In fact, Aki has featured underneath several of my tracks over the years, but damn I can't remember which ones, I'm sure I'll find one eventually. Anyway.. the track is short, and I tried to capture the sadness and joy in owning a brilliant animal, a true companion over the years, but also I really didn't want to overcook, or outstay its welcome, after all, when we say goodbye, we are paying tribute not just to the sadness in the moment, but the memory of all those great years of friendship.
It was already hard thinking of how to approach this, so I tried to just naturally build the piece. It's a pretty lo-fi mix, but I hope it hangs together.
Here is the art for the week (cat free, my partner and I looked and we'd taken over 1000 photos of him over the years and frankly, you can go to my instagram for many of those) I don't think I could do justice right now:
Thank you to the folk who reached out btw, or even reacted with an emoji, big heart to the WB community. Every pet owner really knows what it can be like. So I also dedicate this short little piece to y'all, I hope it matches for you too.
Finally! Here is the art from the 2016 track that featured Aki front and centre (Young Hopes for Old Dreams:

  • Week 16 - shaike - Those damned squirrels
They chewed through the cables (my internet). Now I have to play offline.
80's Eurovision version for some reason? idk
Look what the squirrels have done to me
Look what those cretins have done
They chewed through the cables (my internet!)
    Before my weekly beat’s done
Now I have to play offline
    Now I have to sing
    I’m playing into ableton
    Then a cafe for uploading
And if you see me dreaming of kicking a squirrel
Then please dont say it my dog loves that word
And if she hears me singing she’ll fuhreak out
And the doorbell’s ringing; tech help me now

  • Week 16 - Paisleyfrog - Our Lesser Evils
    Let's do some 80s synthpop.
Photo is from House on the Rock, circa 2009.
This week was rough. Got to play around with a couple ideas on Monday, and then got sick. That lasted from Tuesday afternoon until Friday afternoon, when I finally felt good enough to get moving again. And then there was an event going on over the weekend (had to be there by 5 on Friday night), which left me Friday afternoon to get something done. Didn't have the energy or time to finish Monday's idea properly (celtic metal), so I started something new..ultimately had about three hours total to work on this.
The whole idea kicked off with a cheesy keyboard - first one I got working and recorded well was my Casio PT-10 (I've modified it with a line out jack so it records clean). Recorded a beat and then matched the Logic project tempo to it. I was working with The Quickness, so the chord track and Session Players were used to kickstart the structure. After I had a basic groove going (just C to F), I started noodling on guitar, which started to dictate changes to the basic chord pattern, and where the melody wanted to go.
When I was noodling, I got a vocal melody idea. Why did the idea have to vocals this week? Part of the week's illness was coughing until my ribs hurt. Bonus, I had a rasp with a slight flavor of Peter Gabriel. I was also pitchy as hell. Go with it, follow the creativity. Initial feel was to do a guitar solo, but inspiration failed immediately. Pivot, go with keyboard additions.
Lyrics were built off a phrase that popped into my head over the chorus - "our lesser evils", from the school of Vague Rock Lyrics. I like the final lyrics - the idea of needing to make a choice where all the decisions will hurt - but there’s a path and a best way.
Let's get into week 17…I’m happy that the last two weeks are over. I’ll get back to the Celtic metal eventually…always wanted to do that and call the band SpeedWhistle.

    Finding ourselves here again
    Needing a friend
Threading the eye of a needle
Knowing it's not now and then
    Lost round the bend
    Running around though
    Which is the way
    What is the why
    Where is the answer to
    Not gonna say
    Not gonna lie
    I'm coming around to
    Facing down the answer
    Making a choice
    Choosing our lesser evils
    Understanding the way
    Finding my voice
    Choosing our lesser evils
    See I've been here before
    Wanting the door
    Losing my wonder why
    Taking the step
    Finding the path
    Always wanting to cry
    Knowing the what
    Knowing the who
    Knowing where the answer is
    Not gonna say
    Not gonna lie
    I'm coming around to
    Facing down the answer
    Making a choice
    Choosing our lesser evils
    Understanding the way
    Finding my voice
    Choosing our lesser evils

  • Week 16 - BarristerPlong - Halcyon 5
More jazzy chords and similar but broken up progessions this week. I took the first half of the Rhythm Changes, the 1 - 6, dragged it out, added some arpeggios, swapped up the percussion, then later in the song a brief visit to the second half of the rhythm changes, the 2 - 5.
I really dig the way it turned out, it gives me Playstation era RPG environment exploration vibes.
    Happy week 16 pals!

  • Week 16 - cmcavoy - Good Sounds
Ambient GRM Atelier and field recordings. A response to my track 2 weeks ago, what does this week sound like?
This is also the 16th overall track of the year, 8th of this phase. I'll be releasing this and it's 7 friends (plus some bonus stuff that happened in between the official tracks) on Bandcamp later this week as BEETGARDEN02.

  • Week 16 - dreat - Temporary Return
Still got 7/4, but this week is my absolute speedtrash submission. There was no way I could have completed the original idea, will try next week.
I had to go with Plan B aka dark ambient. The good part is that I have some thoughts/ideas/plans for the future that came from making it, so it was not "wasted". Not much more to say - I went with known and comfortable to not break the streak.
