  • Week 16 - halfbyte - Several Instances
Originally I was planning on something a little a little more abstract but after a bit of experimenting in the beginning this track basically made itself.
The base sample is an E-Piano loop I recorded (or rather: bounced in Ableton) and then slowed down to 50%. As usual, a lot of XLN RC-20 and Cymatics Origin involved in getting the sound as crunchy and noisy as possible.
All in all, this took about 2 hours start to finish and I am happy with the result. Could I have taken a couple of extra passes on the noodling or at least make it a tiny bit more quantized? Sure. Do I think it would've helped? Probably not.

  • Week 16 - cistern stairs - secret bonus room
    Week 16
    Goal at start 4/14:
Focus on more dynamic layers in the melody. Also experiment with changes/call and response within shorter spans, such as 2 and 4 bars (last week when I was trying to describe this I said 8 bars but I wasn’t thinking, I really meant 4 or less).
    End notes 4/17:
The focus on melodic layers and counter melodies seems to have brought out much more tangible changes. This week I felt like I got close to hitting my target genre of digicore. Dynamic layers seem to be the key to that genre especially.
    Action plan for next week:
Focus again on melodic layers. I’ll probably continue focusing on that for the next several weeks. I’ll worry about drums later.

  • Week 16 - alterationx10 - Ambient Bullshit
Picked up a Torso S4, and this is me making some ambient bullshit after playing around with it for a couple days. Kind of a "live set", individual tracks recorded into Ableton (it works as a 10in/10out interface, so that's nice) - and then I polished the turds with some plugins. Other than me recording/overdubbing, the sounds for the other three tracks were stock ones on device.

  • Week 16 - Cosmic Cairns - Psyche!
I felt like knocking out something a little quick and dirty this week that hopefully rocks a little.  It's also kind of another venting song.  Seems like I need to vent more for some reason lately...
    ______________________________________________________________________________________________
Knocking down walls out of my way
Setting foot out into another gray day
Nothing to see here that's what you say
Everything's fine and it's all okay
Things will be good as long as we pray
Keep all the people alone and afraid
Don't rock the boat, just smile and obey
Everything's fine and it's all okay
    Psyche!
Flooding the zone to make things unclear
Telling them zealots their god will appear
Fill them with hate fill them with fear
And soon everything will be beautiful here
Tell them you wield the sacred spear
Gives you the right to rule this sphere
Hand you the wheel just let you steer
And soon everything will be beautiful here
    Psyche!
Look at them freaks I don't know why
They don't all just go fuck off and die
Don't care what you think please don't reply
No need to worry no need to cry
Just sit and swallow the beautiful lie
    Everything's peaceful under the sky
There's no escape don't even try
No need to worry no need to cry
    Psyche!

  • Week 16 - Earp Lug - Pippum
I was almost finished with this track last week when I had dental surgery, and I ended up making Cosmic Roar instead of finalising the mastering of this song.
Really simple song to make, I made my Sonicware Liven Ambient 0 play a random note from a set of four. I then set the delay to be pretty long, so the notes would bounce back and forth to create this complex melody. While it played, I dialed in the resonance and cutoff similar to how you would playing acid house, which greatly expanded the sounds coming from the box. There was just a kiss of resonance with a long tail, which creates this really cool backing synth/bass sound. In post I tried to compress the audio a bit just to bring the resonance up as much as I could, but it's still pretty deep in the mix. I then just animated the volume with keyframes to adjust the perceived loudness so it would have a relatively equal sound that would still expand and contract for your listening pleasure.
The video is just a few hundred photos I took on my Kodak Charmera this morning from 6:00-7:00 AM as the light began to come through the windows. I then made each photo 15 frames long, and created two additional layers of the photos and set their opacity to Screen. I then offset each layer 5 frames so that the photos would change once every 5 frames, but hold for 15 frames each. This created a cool animated triple exposure effect. I then rearranged and deleted a few photos that felt too bright or dark, and changed the timing slightly at the end so it would "fade out", and called it good.

  • Week 16 - deeckzeven - artisanal microplastics fresh for you
This one was chords-first, born from piano tinkering. The chord pads here are two instances of an FM synth, each playing a perfect fourth. The fourths combine to make 4 note chords. But the two synths take turns sliding to their next notes so it sound...well, you'll hear it or you won't. Also I love the sus2/4 (or sus4add9 or however you want to spell it) sound.
This track resisted mixing. Really I just eventually got tired of adjusting and decided it would do. I mean, that's what always happens. But even more so this time.
