Fucked off most of week. Recorded some gameboy tracks and designed cover. Caught up on sleep and started to shift gears. Feeling slump from coming off of large projects. Happens everytime something big and ongoing I am involved in. Always a bit of an crisis figuring out how live w/o the things that used to fully fill your life. Listened to a lot of radio from local broadcast stations. Independent and community ran mostly. Lots of bizarre segments and introduced to new music. The later the better.

Game testing for the WIP NightBound demo :) Sharing notes with AL and setting up meeting for discussion of tweaks, bugs, and fixes.

I've been thinking about the cynicism I see in people in the last few years and the conversion from blind optimism. I feel less friction in political and work perspective now but, I think that it's become a limitation. The more careful vigilance and more objective perspectives is welcome but, for many the conclusion is to accept the order and lower conditions. There is an aversion to a second observation, that conditions can be changed if effort and challenges are made. There are objective examples that we can follow and expand upon if we can find the motivation. There are pragmatic options of opportunity yet to seized.

Used radio samples from last week and combined it w/ ones recorded this week. Spent  night DXing and scanning the airwaves outside of apartment. Set up wire antenna from 3rd floor fire escape down to ground of parking lot (basic triangle slant). sat for a few hours listening on collapsable stool. lots of CW activity. limited USB and LSB this week. Reached transmissions from  China, Florida, Japan, Poland, and Algeria. Need a indoor solution. Took recordings of scans and reused drum synthesis and tuned tones from radio sounds from last week. layered in new sounds. All sounds from radio samples. Would like active indoor loop antenna to reduce QRM and to null out bleed between boadcasts. Would be nice not to have set up outside in the cold too.

Phew, I started a new job this week. I'm grateful to have work in this economy but being the new person at work brings a lot of stress and pressure.

I spent some time cleaning up old files and found this jam recording that I made last year. It's an Erica Synths LXR-02 synced to an Eowave Quadrantid Swarm. I love the Quadrantid Swarm for its far-out techno sounds, although it does sound a bit same-y on its own after a while (great for getting random wild samples from though.) I thought this jam sounded pretty good so I shortened it a bit and used Arturia Mix Drums to make the drums sound less dry. Then I added Arturia Delay Brigade's "Dub Wize" preset to get some nice sounding dub echos on the Quadrantid Swarm. One minor regret I have is that the drums are very mono in the mix, but that also leaves some stereo room for the dub echoes, I suppose.

Anyway, hope you are all doing well and ready for some beautiful fall weather.

A while ago, I made a huge amount of stems for my friend Cold Sushi to work on a track on the M8. In the end, because I sent him so many stems and so much material to work with, he decided it would make more sense to take the project into Ableton.

What he did with what I sent him was honestly amazing. He turned all that material into something completely different from anything I had experienced before. No one had ever taken one of my projects and approached it in that way, and the whole experience was incredibly inspiring for me.

So, a big thank you to him for the time, creativity and effort he put into it. I really appreciate what he did with my work and the way he pushed the idea somewhere I wouldn't have gone on my own.

After missing two weeks because of work — I was busy helping put together SUTI Festival — I finally had some time to come back to the project that originally became the material I sent him.

This time, I wanted to finish the track myself and take it somewhere completely different. I wanted it to somehow evoke Japan, sushi and its culture, without making it too obvious or cliché.

Somehow, it ended up becoming this psychedelic, progressive journey with a techno structure. 😂

I'm also quite happy with how the mix turned out. Surprisingly, it came together really well on the first pass. Unfortunately, I didn't have enough time to properly fine-tune and polish it as much as I would have liked. In the MP3 version, I feel the mids are slightly behind where I wanted them to be, but overall I'm still really happy with the final result.

And honestly, that's also part of the fun of WeeklyBeats — sometimes you just have to let the track go and accept that it is what it is. 😅

I had a lot of fun making it, and more than anything, I really enjoyed the whole process — from making the original material, to sharing it with someone else, seeing what he could do with it, and eventually coming back to the project myself.

I hope you enjoy the journey as much as I enjoyed making it.

This week I'm trying out Dreamtonics new plugin Instrument X which is a classical instrument modelling synthesizer.

I've never written for a string quartet before so this was an interesting challenge and I decided to have a go at writing a waltz and added a flute to make it a Quintet.

In terms of composition it's a fairly standard progression in Fm which ends on a C7 each time. The turnaround does a backdoor resolution up to a C# and then for the B section I switch to F major for a more nostalgic section uplifting section.

I got this idea as the cello line reminds me of Favorite Things the Miles Davis version and that famously switches between the parallel major and minor.

Towards the end I have some fun with the flute which switches between playing in unison harmony and call and response with the violin.

So far I'm quite impressed with instrument X.

Like Synthesizer V it's pretty much it's own DAW inside your DAW, the only issue I've had is that the first violin does sound a bit excessively scratchy at times and it was hard to tone it down. I'm sure it will get better as I learn more about how to use it and they make updated versions.

This one was made completely on the mpc1000, trying to get used to the limitations there.

I found the FX pretty much suck, and haven't got proper routing set up to use my SP404 as an FX send so kept it very minimal.

All the melodics are made from one sample, which was quite interesting, as a whole.

I thought I'd be using longer parts of the sample, but ended up with very short plucks which gives me a old video game type vibe.

For sure this was a fun experiment, no way as fast as the m8, but more hands on, less sound manipulation than the sp404, but easier to sequence edit
