    had family in town and my sister sings and plays ukelele. have always wanted to make music with her again like when we were kids and recorded into Windows Sound Recorder on Windows 95. we saw a bunch of birds this trip so this is what came out. most all of the instrumentation was her, i just added some percussion and the wurlitzer, and then arranged and added some effects.

  • Week 14 - Tomatron.Jones - Flying LFO-tus
    I only started this a few hours having to submit it. Started with some arp sample loop that I heavily modified, in particular with LFOs mapped to a handful of parameters such as through a spectral resonators with a MIDI carrier input, volume, and the bass synth parameters. Kinda lofi-ish, reminiscent of Flying Lotus or something. This was a fun little playground for lots of LFO based effects. Also added some dreamy piano, a built-in Ableton instrument.
    * Splice Samples for drums, arp loops
    * Ableton FX such as LFO, Spectral Resonators
    * Bass from Ableton bass instruments
    * Piano from Ableton
    * Transit, Valhalla plugins
    * Gullfoss + Izotope Elements for master
    Total Time: 4 hours

  • Week 14 - Tom Foolery - Oases
    I am submitting this in the dying minutes of the deadline (9 minutes to go as I type this).
    Last week was extremely busy starting the new job, and I managed to get away for the Easter weekend (a very lovely getaway) which has meant I have had no time to write anything, and sadly no time to go through and listen to people's submissions!!!
    Hoping to make some time this week to get a chance to catch up on the tracks I've missed, so many I'm excited to hear.
    And thank you, thank you, thank you, to everyone who is still leaving nice comments, it is so lovely to see <3

  • Week 14 - tarv - winsome
    i had originally planned to do something sample based for april, but i wasn't feeling very inspired.  i've decided instead to go back and re-record and rework some unfinished ideas/lost media this month. this is an old earworm i got after mixing 40 bands at Fest a few years ago. every previous recording of it never quite got where i wanted it to be, and this time is no different really.  but alas, you win some, you lose some.

  • Week 14 - fetalface - Sincerest form of flattery
    Holy cow y'all I got to go hear the premiere of "Music for 48 Guitars" (24-guitar version) by Bay Area composer Moe Staiano last night and it was really really really incredible. I'll post a link to the video if/when it goes up on youtube, but until then here is a link to a related piece for 8 guitars: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGrAPQLT3GI
    The 24guitarists, bassist, drummer, & 4 percussionists were surrounding the audience on the audience level and above on a balcony, it was a brutal piece over an hour long with sustained tremolo, glissandos and other stuff I just wanted to see today what it would be like to try and play something like that for even a minute. I couldn't do it AND my hand exploded! (but I am not a guitarist) (all the musicians playing last night were seriously talented, proficient, and fit!!!! Just Wow)

  • Week 14 - Dustsucker - Skip Walk The Dog Backwards In Slow Motion
    It was quite something, you should've seen it.
    Fully arranged and synthesized on M8 with a slapdash mastering in Logic.
    › Old Man Yells At Cloud‹ Old Man Yells At CloudIn an effort to pace the creativity a bit more I started early in the week for a change. Not a bad idea, but more distance from the deadline meant I was free to experiment and keep adding more things.
    I had a pretty cool start with the heavy bassline, then added some microtonal stuff, added the weird chords in hypersynth, remade those same chords by spreading the voices over multiple tracks and turned it into the softer opening with randomised tremolo on each note. There's also an aux table changing reverb size, which turns it into a percussive element (the first percussive kind of sound in the track). I had to rewrite a bunch pretty far into it because I decided I wanted to tune the microtonal stuff per note instead of using the general scale, which in turn led to a bunch of long REPs breaking. Somewhere along the way I also added the extra challenge to synthesize everything directly on M8. I often use samples for drums because it's just super quick to grab some, but not this time. So I remade the drum sounds halfway through the song, which also meant remixing other parts. So yeah.. a lot.
    Even though there's a ton of things that went into this track, at the same time I think it somehow misses a clear sense of purpose. I really like it when a track has one core idea that everthing else gets built around. It can be anything: a melodic or rhythmic hook, an emotion or message to convey, some kind of weird new sound or technique, or even just something that feels good for some reason. Doesn't matter what, but it really helps to have a central point to focus on. I think that's something that is lacking in this track, or maybe it has too many things at once. Or maybe I couldn't really find the right structure to accomodate them. Either way I'm probably just sick of working on this and ranting now. Congrats and thank you if you read this far! Dog farts <3
