This week, I've been part of the...erm... Weekly Sample Project ? IDK HOW TO LABEL IT ! But the sample pack get together within the discord community ! (I like the "Sample Pack Get Together")

My first time trying to work around sample and trying to force myself to work around. Pretty tough I must say, I really lack the experience of learning to mess around with it so I got stopped really quick and didn't really went digging as much as I should've (I blame the new heatwave for it, I can't work with 30+°C inside it's impossible, so I ended up doing everything on the sunday because nothing scares me more than loosing the streak :DD) so I ended up with some kind of summer dance music ? (Lacking the mixing as well but I mean... HEAT) It's kinda fun, but lacking of stuff I NEED to work on and I SHOULD take the time to try (but always end up with not enough time !)

A track in parts inspired by Mojado feat. Mr. Sam - Naranja (Dimitri Andreas Vision), which is an absolute Techno/Trance classic and certified banger.

Just as Naranja is Spanish for orange (as in the fruit), Sinaasappel is Dutch for orange. And what do oranges have? Exactly: Acid! So this track comes with a large portion of acid :D

I decided to continue with my experiments with IDM, this time, using a combinator for the drums and glitch effect.

I then found another combinator for the ambient pad that comes in. After building out the bass, I worked on a set of Motifs that would come in and out of the arrangement.

I then worked on the mix and effects, finishing up with some automations and mastering.

This morning I opened up a tutorial for a Silent Hill type of song and attempted to follow it. It doesn't sound that scary, but maybe could be for the ending scene or credits.

I think if I'm gonna make anything truly horror sounding I probably need to go looking for some good samples to use. Or make some?

Trying atmospheric jungle! I always looooved the spacey synth I hear many times here, so I got some samples to play with in the same vibe and got this quick tune together, the m8 really shines with these types of genres, programming the drums is just super fun and I haven't even spent enough time with it :)

Anyway this genre is so cool, it always brings me back to that playstation sound when turning it on, but is a strange feeling because is also kind of scary in a way, hard to describe, but maybe is a feel of loneliness or a distant thing with a lot of sadness in it, it carries a lot of emotion with just one sound is incredible, I understand why is being used in many games for uncertain moments in the story

The card on the m8 is almost full of samples, I have to stop loading stuff in it ahah

This week is was hot hot hot and I was travelling for work an awful amount.

I had the idea that I would try and make something a bit looser... and little bit of a jam, then build some parts out when I had a bit of time at the weekend. This kind worked! I realised early on that I wanted to go for a bit of a Tangerine Dream like soundscape, so leant into that hard... I'm a big fan of some of the later TD albums, especially Raum which was, weirdly my intro to them and once of my fav 'I'm travelling' albums.

Anyway.. there is still a lot of ebow on this too, and I enjoyed making some weird ambience with the Kastle's...

There are many wisdoms to be gleaned from Weekly Beats, and this week featured two of them:

1. Just like improv, if someone throws something at you, roll with it ***

2. At every opportunity, make something weird, then make it weirder. ***

This week I was on a sorta dark-electronica kick, which for me sits somewhere between industrial and NIN and something more cyber-EDM, and that had me fucking around with my Pulsar-23 and the modular rig with some grandmother for a whee bit of something almost melodic. This was kind of more proof-of-concept workflow stuff and it was fun and while I didn't quite get the beats right on point for the genre, I recorded like 9 minutes of a good take that would work for a track.

Dropped that into Ableton, fucked around to make stuff sound good, started chopping it all into an arrangement. Realized pretty quickly that while the drums sounded good, they were very textural, and needed some discrete percussion elements and structure to really pull this into something with a solid backbone.

So - more drums! another kick! ONE MORE KICK THAT SOUNDS LIKE A BASS! Loud super dry hats! Clangy electronic buzzy sounding something I don't know what! Toms on a counter rhythm to all those kicks!

And hey, more texture while we're at it! Weird pumping echoing screams and chanting! Fuck around with those drums and make more textures! Make it weird people!

At which point I felt like I had enough to do a solid arrangement, which is when I sent a little short clip to the illustrious JWH, who within short time completely surprised me and recorded a short bit of vocals - six tracks with harmonies ?! - and sent it along as wavs, along with apologies if it wasn't a good fit and promising me I didn't have to work with them, etc... but let's remember wisdom #1 above:

If someone throws something at you, roll with it!

They were already weird vocals, weird lyrics - I loved them - and hardly a fit for the genre but I didn't care, cuz this was wisdom #2: an opportunity to make something already weird even more weird. Also an opportunity to fuck with vocals that weren't my own and do something amazing.

Also, a direction - with one vocal element decided for me, the remaining vocal decisions were essentially already made and I saved a fuck ton of time.

So Josh entered the fray and I took his beautiful clean vocals and made them weirder. And then I added my own with his lyrics and made those weirder. And then those vocals became more elements and made the whole song weirder.

And here we are. I think the result is great, I learned a whole ton of stuff, solved some problems, made some plans, and made something awesome and weird while I was at it.
