Stubbed my big toe pretty hard this weekend.

› ouch!‹ ouch!...not sure if it's bruised or broken, but it's very blue. So I spent the last two days mostly on the couch, not really feeling like making music. I tried a couple of times to get something started with samples from the friendly sample challenge organized on the Weekly Beats Discord by AiDeRen. After a bunch of failed attempts, I decided to pivot and check out some stuff I'd done a couple of weeks earlier while messing around in LSDJ. There was one semi-finished track that I felt was okay-ish, but it still didn't hold up on its own. So I sampled it into M8, added a slightly thicker kick and snare from Electronisounds, a little PWM lead noodling, and ended up using a tiny bit of guitar Lizenn had submitted to the community challenge. I almost missed the community challenge, but I managed to dip my toe in. That fucker really needs some cooling..

This is very much speedtrash, but at least it's something! By this time next week I'll be in the Belgian Ardennes with a group of friends. Among them are a bunch of pretty talented musicians, and I hope to convince some of them to collaborate on a track.

I've been down a rabbit hole listening to amapiano music and ive done my best to try and write a beat emulating the style. It definitely needs some words but time got away from me this week.

about 2 hours plucking away at patters, 15 minutes sequencing things and another 15 minutes fixing up the fx and volume. about 2 hours 30 minutes work time on a sunday afternoon

This was an experiment of whether it's sort of possible to write a track using the Ableton Live MIDI keyboard that you play with your computer keyboard. I guess it's sort of possible!

I'm back to breakbeats with another attempt at some jungle. I've been obsessively analyzing Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith's Ruin over the past few weeks to try and understand how it works. I really like the way she drops out whole sections into silence to create more tension/mini builds, and I tried to play around with this in my track. My general thinking was that every time there's a gap/silent section, I have to do something new/different. The other major thing that Ruin does is use a lot of vocal samples to build up emotion -- I noticed it way too late when I was making my track and didn't have time to incorporate it. Maybe next week I'll do something that smooshes up a bunch of vocals.

Some other new things that I tried:

- breaks inspired by Hot Pants and Think

- everything in 7/8 time -- surprisingly easy if you set the default groove to chop of beats 15 &16. also unclear if the 7/8 feel is super crisp in this

- more snare-forward breakbeat pattern, something like K--s--s, K-S-K-S-S

- quickly laying out all the major sections of the track with basic sounds so that I have a sketch that I can spend more time on editing

I could probably write a lot more about the production, but it's almost time for lunch :). At this point in the year, composition and arrangement are starting to feel a bit more fluid, and I think that it's getting easier to listen and pick apart reference tracks. Super appreciate being able to learn in community with all of y'all <3

Back to the iPad with a Korg Gadget jam!

Post-production notes/lessons learned:

- While I really enjoy the layout and simplicity of Korg Gadget, I think I can officially determine that the sounds are not for me. Even after decent adjustment of initialized synths, a few paid IAP expansions, and scrubbing through the presets of both melodics and drum patterns, the actual sound of each of the Gadgets is something that I have a hard time gelling with. They sound fantastic it's true, but there's something about them that doesn't sit well with the kind of stuff I like to make...
