Weird Darkness: Paranormal & True Crime Stories

Deep within Navajo culture lives a creature that was once human — a witch who murdered their own family to gain the power to shapeshift, possess the living, and control the dead.

*No AI Voices Are Used In The Narration Of This Podcast*

IN THIS EPISODE: The Navajo believe there are places where the powers of both good and evil are present and that those powers can be harnessed for either. And the masters of these powers are the skinwalkers. (Skinwalking Witches) *** If you hear the words “murder” and “London” you immediately think of Jack the Ripper – but he is only one of many brutal murderers who prowled the foggy city looking for victims. We’ll look at some of the most gruesome in London’s history. (Murderous London) *** Since it was built in 1981, the Sunshine Skyway Bridge connecting St. Petersburg to Tampa, Florida has been a harbinger of tragedy. The four-mile-long bridge rises like a mastodon 430 feet into the bright sunlight. On or around the bridge, there have been hundreds of suicides, as well as deadly shipwrecks. And in 2016, there was the heinous murder of a child let down by the very system designed to protect her. (The Bridge to Tragedy) *** You’ve probably seen a street artist in person or on video appearing to defy gravity – floating as in mid-air, hoping you’ll give them some of your pocket change. And of course you’ve seen magicians levitate the beautiful assistant, or levitate themselves. But then there are those who say they can do it for real – no trickery involved. Some are laughable, but others make you wonder. (Gravity-Defying Geezers)

One man's completely ordinary sick day on this date would go on to cost tens of millions of people their lives. A school full of children goes up in flames. Two people were found poisoned on a park bench. Something was launched into orbit from a US military space shuttle and we still don't know what it was. A film was screened for the first time on this date that gave the world its first vampire. And it's a day to triple-check your grammar. | The Morning Weird Darkness

There are cases that make people question everything they thought they knew about how justice works — and then there are cases like these. The names Brendan Dassey and Kimberly Long have been argued over in courtrooms, in living rooms, and in comment sections for years, by people who cannot let go of the nagging sense that something went terribly wrong. And wrapped around both of their stories is a question that researchers, attorneys, and psychologists have spent decades trying to answer — one that sounds simple until you really sit with it.

IN THIS EPISODE: In 2007, a sixteen-year-old boy was tried and convicted as an adult for the assault and murder of a woman in Wisconsin. But is it possible that Brendan Dassey isn’t guilty as we were all led to believe? (Is Brendan Dassey Innocent?) *** After a night of bar-hopping, Ozzy Conde and girlfriend Kimberly Long got into an argument that ended up with Ozzy laying on the floor – dead. Kimberly was sent to prison. At least that’s the story the prosectors told. But Kimberly fought for years to try and convince people she was not a murderer. But was she? (Kimberly’s Long Struggle to Prove Her Innocence) *** The idea of someone breaking down and confessing to police that they committed a crime – when in actuality they did not do it – seems ludicrous to us. But it happens all the time. Why on earth would someone ever do such a thing? We’ll look a bit closer at how it happens. (Why Do The Innocent Confess?)

Two different families moved into the same rural farmhouse years apart, never spoke to each other, and both reported the same three-foot creature lurking near the barn. | #WDRadio

WEEK OF November 17-23, 2024
==========
HOUR ONE: Did she drown? Did she commit suicide? Despite her death in 1889, we still don’t know how Maggie Hourigan died. (The Mystery of Maggie Hourigan) *** In 1958 Gavin Gibbons wrote a children’s science-fiction novel By Space Ship to the Moon, which featured a UFO landing on Moel Sych in the Berwyn Mountains of North Wales. Sixteen years later, in a surreal case of life imitating art, those very same mountains would again be the focus for a story involving a downed UFO. But this time, some said, the story was for real. (The UFO Case That Refuses to Die) *** What if creatures like gnomes and imps aren’t just real – but also evil? (Nasty Gnomes, Evil Imps and Terrifying Tommyknockers)
==========
HOUR TWO: “Jerry Meets A Sasquatch” *** Greer Island, a small patch of land close to where the West Fork of the Trinity River flows into Lake Worth, is heavily shaded by tall oaks, cedar elms and cottonwoods. One of the quietest spots in Fort Worth, the island is home to egrets and owls, perhaps an alligator or two. And maybe, just maybe, the Lake Worth Monster. (The Lake Worth Monster) *** In 2017, Washington State Senator Karen Keiser was quoted as saying, “The incidents continue, they continue, and we have to consider that there is potential cosmic life over the island… it’s a very special place, with a cosmic presence.” What exactly happened on Maurey Island in 1947? (The Maurey Island Incident) *** Whether you’re a true believer or one of those skeptics, stories of spirits haunting the living from the confines of a Ouija board can chill you to the bone, and make you think twice before communicating with entities from another dimension. (True And Disturbing Ouija Board Stories)
