  • #40: Implementing Small Business Tax Strategies with Dawn Hryshko

“A lot of people believe tax planning isn't for them. That it's only for the elite or the very wealthy and that's not true. Once you are an entrepreneur, you need someone on your team who understands the tax space pretty well because it is constantly changing,” explains Dawn Hryshko, Founder and President of Hryshko and Associates, a boutique firm that tailors growth and advisory packages for small and mid sized businesses. Today, Dawn brings her over 30 years of accounting and tax law experience to talk with host Kiley Peters about tax strategies for small businesses.

Many small business owners make the mistake of thinking tax preparation is a one step process when really it should be continued throughout the year. The business is always changing and tax laws also change every year, so it is important to have someone on your side who understands and can keep up with all these changes. You do not have to wait until your business is pulling in a ton of money before hiring a tax strategist. It is important for every entrepreneur to have a tax professional on their team who will help them to get the maximum benefit and spend the least amount of money on taxes as possible.

Does your small business have a tax strategist? Learn more about why you need to hire one and how the right tax plan can help you to save money each year.

    Quotes

    • “A lot of small businesses think that when they meet with their tax preparer in the spring, that's it, one and done. But it's a continuous process throughout the year, because your business is constantly changing. So that's the number one mistake.” (2:47-3:01 | Dawn)
    • “I always tell people I'm working with, don't worry about paying for it. I'm a big proponent of using other people's money when it comes to business.” (8:43-8:50 | Dawn)
    • “You can take a deduction now without paying for it yet. You can finance it, as long as you get it in your possession.” (17:13-17:18 | Dawn)
    • “If you're an employee of your company, or you're not an employee of your company here is one of the sweetest tools, or loopholes, I should say, is you can start your payroll on December 31 of the year and it's treated as if you were an employee all year.” (17:44-17:58 | Dawn)
    • “A lot of people believe tax planning isn't for them. That, ‘Oh, I have to be making millions of dollars before I'm really going to see it, it's only for the elite or the very wealthy.’ That's not true. Once you are an entrepreneur, you need your team, and part of your team should be somebody who understands the tax space pretty well, because it is constantly changing.” (26:46-27:11 | Dawn)
    • “If you can when you start your business, I tell people, you want to plan for the very end of your business, and a good tax plan and strategists on your team can make that happen as well.” (27:45-27:56 | Dawn)

  • #39: Leading with Creativity and Imagination with Beth Inglish

“Our imagination is where it all begins. Creativity is really the act of putting that imagination into process,” explains Beth Inglish, keynote speaker. As a keynote speaker, Beth helps organizations to improve their culture and engagement. Today, Beth joins host Kiley Peters to talk about the creative process and how to incorporate creativity and imagination into leadership.

We tend to think of creativity in terms of artistic talent, but truly we all have the capacity for creativity. In fact, we engage in creative processes every single day. The beauty of creativity is that anything we can imagine, we can make happen. When leaders lean into creativity, they improve their overall communication with their teams. People want to engage more with leaders who are open-minded, curious, and willing to listen to new ideas and work with them on the process. Being open to imagination and the creative process is vital for being a good leader.

Do you think of yourself as not being creative? The truth is, you are probably a lot more creative in your daily life than you even realize. Learn how to embrace creativity in non artistic ways and discover how thinking creatively can help you to improve as a leader.

    Quotes

    • “Whether or not you can create music or art, it doesn't matter. Those are skills that are developed with creativity. We were all created on this earth to create, it's as simple as that.” (2:08-2:22 | Beth)
    • “Simply by putting an outfit together in the morning, or cooking a meal. These are all opportunities for us to create, even in the smallest ways. And if we can do the small things, we can do the big things.” (3:10-3:21 | Beth)
    • “When people say, ‘I'm not creative,’ what they're really saying is, ‘I don't think I have any artistic skill.’ But really, they're cutting themselves short. Because when you say ‘I'm not creative,’ you're automatically putting a block on your creativity.” (4:01-4:19 | Beth)
    • “Creativity is meant to be freeing. It's meant to give us endless possibilities. You think the sky's the limit or whatever, you hear all these cliche things, it's because it's possible. It truly is. We're only limited by what our mind believes is possible. So start with your mind and then get into your body.” (6:00-6:18 | Beth)
    • “Our imagination is where it all begins. Creativity is really the act of putting that imagination into process.” (8:19-8:26 | Beth)
    • “Leadership is not about us, it’s about the people we serve. And if we're not listening to the people we serve, then we don't have all the information we need to be effective leaders.” (14:12-14:20 | Beth)
    • “There's just so much beauty in the creating process to know that we can make whatever it is that we want possible.” (30:00-30:06 | Beth)

  • #38: Becoming F*ckless Through Behavioral Science with Gianna Biscontini

“Having the foundations to why we do what we do is so important because learning these things made me so much more patient with myself and with humanity,” shares Gianna Biscontini, Founder of Live Well Lifestyle Design and Author of F*ckless: Guide to Wild and Unencumbered Freedom. Today, Gianna joins host Kiley Peters to talk about how her background as a board certified behavioral analyst has helped her to live a f*ckless lifestyle and how others can become f*ckless themselves.

One fateful morning in October of 2019, Gianna Biscontini woke up really angry with her expected place as a woman in the world. This anger fueled her to open her laptop and begin writing what ended up becoming the first 5 pages of her novel. Her opening line, “Women are conditioned to be the air and water that serve, but do not disrupt everyone around us,” is one that really hits home to so many women. Gianna explains that when you really comprehend the behavioral science behind people’s actions, it can help you to better understand and be more patient with yourself and everyone around you. When people are willing to be vulnerable and open, it sets the stage for open conversation with others. Ultimately, people’s actions are caused by a desire for something, whether that be a desire for attention, food, escape or avoidance of a negative stimulus, or automatic reinforcement. And when you understand the reason behind someone’s behavior, you can better navigate your interactions with them.

Do you struggle with the frustration of others' behaviors? If so, it is time to learn how to become f*ckless and reclaim control over your life by opening yourself up to others and gaining a better understanding of human behavior.

    Quotes

    • “When one person opens up, it creates space for the other person to safely open up.” (2:53-2:57 | Gianna)
    • “I flipped open my laptop and I wrote the first five pages to F*ckless starting with, ‘Women are conditioned to be the air and water that serve, but do not disrupt everyone around us’.” (7:40-7:51 | Gianna)
    • “Having the foundations to why we do what we do is so important because learning these things made me so much more patient with myself, with humanity.” (9:47-9:57 | Gianna)
    • “You walk into a room, you speak up, you're excited about an idea. Nobody listens to you. The man next to you repeats it, and everyone treats him as if he is a visionary, right? How does that feel? Does that make you want to speak up more in the future? No, it's extremely punishing. And if that happens enough, it's a learned helplessness no matter what I do, nothing changes, and you kind of just atrophy and we become a little bit dead inside.” (11:46-12:16 | Gianna)
    • “I see a lot of women push off their needs and wants as undeserving of attention because that's what society tells them about their needs and wants. And we never benefit from playing small.” Social Media (19:26-19:43 | Gianna)

  • #37: Pivoting Your Career Path with Gina Riley

“If you're making a pivot, you have to first get clear on yourself. You have to make a plan and you have to take off bite-sized pieces,” explains Gina Riley, career transition coach and executive search consultant. Today, Gina joins host Kiley Peters to talk about how to pivot your career path as an entrepreneur or aspiring entrepreneur.

When you are considering bringing on a new team member, it is important to find the right person for the job. The perfect candidate will not only have the skill sets and competencies to do the job well, but will also be passionate about the position and feel aligned with the company’s values. In order to hire the right people, you have to ask the right questions during the interview. Using behavioral questions that are based on the actual skills required in the position is a proven way to get candidates to tell stories about relevant past job performances. If you are considering becoming an entrepreneur, but are not quite at that step yet, don’t be afraid to make it a “slow burn”. Get very clear on who you are and what you want to achieve with your business, but do not leave your corporate job until you are fully secure.

Before making a pivot on your career path it is vital that you get really sure about who you are as a person, what your values are, and what you want to achieve. Make a plan and start doing small steps rather than trying to make a huge change all at once.

    Quotes

    • “Let's say you have to go to market or you need to bring in a new teammate. The first thing is to get very clear on what skills you need in that individual.” (11:57-12:06 | Gina)
    • “The reason why you want to use behavioral questions is because you're going to be 85% more accurate in making your choice, because past stories are the best indicator of future performance.” (13:16-13:29 | Gina)
    • “Sometimes we go down a path because we think it feels right or it's in our head, and then we realize in our gut, in our heart, it's not working. And we have to be humble enough to say, ‘Oh, I made a choice that wasn't the right direction for me’. So we may call that failure, but I call it learning. That's information that I shouldn't be heading that direction, and I need to realign.” (25:17-25:43 | Gina)
    • “If you're making a pivot, you have to first get clear on yourself. You have to make a plan and you have to take off bite-sized pieces.” (30:10-30:20 | Gina)

  • #36: Storytelling Strategies for Small Businesses with Melissa Ripp

“One of the things that I think is really important is trying to find that Venn diagram between the questions and the things that you can confidently speak about. And then, thinking about what you want your target audience to take from that,” explains Melissa Ripp, Owner and Founder of Pea Pod Marketing and PR Consulting, a full service marketing communications firm for female entrepreneurs and executives. Today, Melissa joins host Kiley Peters to talk about the best storytelling strategies for small businesses.

Melissa was in third grade when she realized she wanted to be a writer. And ever since, she has set out to use her expertise to help female entrepreneurs and executives craft the best possible stories for their brands. While there are several ways to go about this, the common factor is vulnerability and a willingness to share personal stories from your past. People are often taught to believe that vulnerability is equal to weakness, but actually it can be a strength as it helps people connect more to you and your story and can be a way to showcase your authenticity. Some ways to be more comfortable with storytelling are to make a list of topics you feel confident speaking about, consider key learnings that have worked for you and your business, think about your origin story or times from your past that have gotten you to where you are today, and consider your personal value set and times in your life that your values have come into play.

Storytelling is a great way to connect with your audience on a deeper level. People are more likely to want to work with businesses that they feel reflect their own values and business owners who feel relatable and authentic. It can be intimidating to peel back the layers of yourself and be vulnerable publicly, but it can do wonders for your business growth.

    Quotes

    • “I really wanted to help women understand that they can feel empowered to do all of those things on their own. It just starts by sharing their story.” (3:38-3:48 | Melissa)
    • “One of the things that I just think is really important is trying to find that Venn diagram between the questions and the things that you can confidently speak about, and then, kind of thinking about what you want your target audience to take from that.” (5:51-6:08 | Melissa)
    • “Every single thing you go through in your life is all writing material.” (17:23-17:27 | Melissa)
    • “I do start a lot of my thought leadership and storytelling clients on LinkedIn just because I feel like it is a great way to A.) not only get your thoughts out quickly, but also B.) it really serves as a nice testing ground for confidence.” (22:40-22:56 | Melissa)
    • “I've had a ton of people that have said, what got me most comfortable and talking about myself was talking about myself in the context of other things and other people. And that made it a bit easier to pull off or pull apart those baby onions and start kind of getting to the core of me.” (41:32-41:50 | Melissa)

  • #35: Exiting Brainchild Studios with Kiley Peters

“You don't have to scale, grow, and build in revenue and headcount to be successful. You can be small and mighty and fulfilled. And it is not selfish to want to build your business and live your life in a way that feels good and fulfilling to you,” shares host Kiley Peters, small business strategist, executive coach, and operations consultant. Today, Kiley talks about her decision to close Brainchild Studios and go all-in on RAYNEIX.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent Great Resignation, the past few years have been an even more difficult time than usual to be a small business owner. While facing staffing shortages and reduced revenue, Kiley came to realize that she was spending too much time on areas of the business that she did not want to be doing, and that the business was no longer aligned with her values as well as it could be. She attempted to scale the business as entrepreneurs are encouraged to do, but found that was not the business model she preferred to work in. So, ultimately, she has decided to close the doors on Brainchild at the end of 2022. This decision has allowed her to put her all into her new endeavor, RAYNEIX, and bring her fantastic team along with her. At first, having to make the decision to close the business made Kiley feel like she was letting people down or failing in some way. But ultimately, success is personal and doesn’t look the same for everyone. Now, Kiley is working to redefine success for herself and to pursue the version that feels aligned with her personal values and goals. And she encourages other small business owners to do the same.

If you are a small business owner and you do not want to have to scale your business, that’s okay! You can pursue your own definition of success and stay true to what feels right for you. Don’t let anyone tell you how your business should look to be successful, because success is personal and looks different for everyone.

    Quotes

    • “I realized that if I were to sell it, I'd have to sell my team, and I believe that my team is the very best thing that has happened with Brainchild. So instead of selling it, we took a different approach. And at the very beginning of the year, I talked to my employees and I let them know that I think they're the best thing that's come out of Brainchild, and I wanted to go all in on RAYNEIX, and I'd like them to come with me should they have me. And luckily for me, they said, yes, we're all in.” (7:55-8:28 | Kiley)
    • “By the end of March in 2022, we had signed all of the revenue we needed to meet the goals we had set for ourselves for the whole year, which was wild, and the first time that's ever happened. So then a lot of people are like, Well, wait a second. Things are going so well. Why would you change? Fair question, but I had to keep coming back to the fact that this wasn't what I wanted.” (9:07-9:31 | Kiley)
    • “We'll be servicing women small business owners in a way that we really weren't able to before and that's really who we want to make an impact on.” (12:06-12:14 | Kiley)
    • “We need to be clear on the fact that that definition of success is our own personal definition and nobody's definition is right, wrong, better, or worse than anyone else’s.” (15:10-15:20 | Kiley)
    • “You don't have to scale and grow and build in revenue and headcount to be successful. You can be small, mighty, and fulfilled. It is not selfish to want to build your business and live your life in a way that feels good and fulfilling to you.” (19:27-19:45 | Kiley)

  • #34: Integrating Holistic Financial Planning with Tammy Trenta

“If you have a successful business, make sure that you find an advisor that understands you and gets you, that's a fiduciary,” explains Tammy Trenta, Founder and CEO of Family Financial. Tammy is a certified financial planner, tax coach, and exit planning advisor. Today, Tammy joins host Kiley Peters to talk about how to integrate holistic financial planning into your business and why it is so vital to work with a fiduciary.

Most certified financial planners are not also fiduciaries. A fiduciary is someone who has a legal obligation to put their client’s needs ahead of their own. For example, anyone who works for a publicly traded company cannot be a fiduciary. It can be complicated to determine as your business grows what you should incorporate and what type of business you should file your taxes as. This can lead to complications with deductions and if you’re not careful, you could end up owing a lot of money in back taxes to the government. The benefit of a holistic approach to financial planning is having someone who really understands your business needs and your overall financial goals.

When it comes to financial planning, it is important to do your homework and hire a certified financial planner that really understands your needs. It can be difficult to find a CFP that is also a fiduciary, but it is worth the extra work to find the right advisor.

    Quotes

    • “A fiduciary is somebody who has a legal obligation to put the client's needs ahead of their own. So if you work for any publicly traded company, are you advocating for the client? Is it even possible to advocate for the client when really you're accountable to the shareholders?” (5:53-6:14 | Tammy)
    • “Many business owners are underserved primarily because even if you are a certified financial planner, many certified financial planners who are not self employed themselves, don't know what it's like to be a business owner. They don't understand the needs that a business owner has.” (7:19-7:39 | Tammy)
    • “You need to be careful with schedule C. Because they will take your company, whatever business it is, and they're going to compare it to other companies. And they're going to see what the average is and they're gonna make you prove all of these deductions as to whether you're legitimate.” (16:52-17:10 | Tammy)
    • “When it comes to incorporating, we might need a lawyer to come into play. But, in my opinion, the lawyer is not going to be helpful, unless they have the context.” (32:01-32:17 | Tammy)
    • “If you have a business and you have a successful business, make sure that you find an advisor that understands you and gets you, that's a fiduciary. Make sure that they're a certified financial planner, and that they do planning.” (35:34-35:52 | Tammy)

  • #33: Exploring Entrepreneurship as a Multipotentialite with Pixie Paula Dezzutti

“Don't set limits, try to be limitless. And I think the rest will fall into place. But remember, you're the only one setting the limits or telling yourself the story. So if somebody tells you no, or can't go along with your vision, try to just tune that out immediately,” shares Pixie Paula Dezzutti, CEO and founder of multiple businesses including Local Choice Spirits, Skirt Magazine, and Striped Pig Distillery. Today, Pixie joins host Kiley Peters to talk about her experience as a multipotentialite.

Pixie felt from a young age that we are the creators of our own lives and that has greatly influenced her own entrepreneurial path. She explains that if everything is an illusion and ultimately meaningless, we are in charge of assigning our own meaning and therefore, can create any life we choose for ourselves. She founded and runs multiple businesses by not following her passion, but instead following her purpose. Pixie suggests really taking the time to determine your own purpose and to dedicate yourself to that, rather than chasing your passions, because passion will rise and fall over time.

When you recognize that the only limits are your own imagination, a world of possibilities opens up. Do not put limits on yourself or allow others to limit your potential. Instead, follow your driving purpose and assign positive meanings to your life.

    Quotes

    • “The way we operate and how we are driven as a culture is something that's been self imposed. I do believe that time is an illusion. So now, it's not about time management, it's about your relationship with the management of time.” (6:03-6:21 | Pixie)
    • “I think as creative entrepreneurs, we get stuck in our future. We spend so much time visualizing the future that when it doesn't happen like this, it's frustrating.” (10:37-10:50 | Pixie)
    • “Know your purpose, not your passion. Get so in touch with who you are as a soul being that you can quickly go inside and be able to find your peace to own who you are no matter what the outside circumstance.” (24:12-24:28 | Pixie)
    • “If you're the one that's picking the meaning, then really, it's all meaningless. Not one position or another has any real credibility. So don't make the whole experience be so full of negative meaning that's negative. Pick the meaning you want to have.” (25:11-25:31 | Pixie)
    • “Don't set limits, try to be limitless and I think the rest will fall into place. But remember, you're the only one setting the limits or telling yourself the story. So if somebody tells you no, or can't be along with your vision, try to just tune that out immediately. Don't create limits for yourself.” (29:02-29:27 | Pixie)

  • #31: Building Business Owners' Personal Wealth with Ali Nasser

“What is your end goal for the company and what actions can you take right now to help get you closer to that end goal? And if you haven't identified the end goal, that first step is to say, ‘Hey, here's my end goal’,” explains Ali Nasser, #1 Amazon bestselling author, serial entrepreneur, speaker, CEO, and wealth and life strategist. Ali is dedicated to helping business owners achieve their goals for their companies and in both their financial and personal lives. To do this, he uses his own personal experience with entrepreneurship to empower other business owners. Today, Ali joins host Kiley Peters to talk about how business owners can build their personal wealth.

Entrepreneurs often forget to stop and think about what the actual end goal is for their business. In order to capture success, you have to first know what your goal is and how the business will create personal value for you. Some ways a business can create value is through succession, if you plan to pass your business down to a family member, it could help you to obtain financial freedom and independence, and it can be a fantastic way to capture your life’s work in a tangible way. When you know what the end goal is, you can gather the right team and resources to help you achieve that goal. Gaining wealth is all well and good, but without a purpose the most successful business in the world will fail to bring fulfillment.

Entrepreneurs tend to have very busy and overwhelming lives and can lose sight of their own importance and the purpose that led them to want to start a business in the first place. In order to truly create lasting personal wealth and benefit from owning a business, it is important to really understand how to capture your success. There is a lot of strategy involved and it can be too much to accomplish without the right team behind you. Tune into this episode of Welcome To Eloma to learn more about the importance of building personal wealth alongside developing your business as an entrepreneur.
