Have you heard of Flight Club, Metro's Freo, Magnet House, The Lookout, Edison bar, The Breakwater, Amplifier, Loop & Print Hall? If you've been out partying in Perth in the last 20 years, then you have visited at least one of David's venues! The man behind many of Perth's most innovative bars, clubs, restaurants and entertainment venues sat down with us in the latest episode.
We sat on the rooftop of Bob's Bar in the Print Hall complex which David has recently taken over. Above us was one GIANT Orange tree which we speak about over a pint of Swan & Guinness. We discuss David's beginnings which nearly saw him join the airforce, then after a dislocated shoulder he pivoted into starting up a mobile phone business which he scaled up and ended up selling at a very healthy profit.
After sitting around "retired" for a couple of years, David got bored and started looking for the next business to build or buy. Accidentally he stumbled across Capital - a nightclub in which he never intended to purchase. Fast forward 19 years & he's just been inducted as a legend of Hospitality in the Australian Hotels Association.

This crazy man is running, jogging or walking 40km every day for 40 days in the hope to raise 40k for John Hunter's Children Hospital for his 40th birthday! He's over 3/4 the way through it & we discuss the pain he's been putting himself through. Juggling his injuries, managing his Newy Fried Chicken Business, being a father & husband - it has not been easy.
We also wind the clock back to when he moved over to Perth in 2008 with his then fiancé. Going from bar tender to managing Gold Bar & then Purl in Subiaco, with the stories that came with it, one with 50 cent.
Then setting up his own bar called The Good Shephard in Leederville & all the business lessons he gained from that experience. Then we discuss how becoming a father, deciding to no longer drink & get into boxing was a sliding doors moment for him. This eventually led him to moving back to Newcastle to be around his family, so his kids could enjoy growing up around their grandparents.

A fascinating chat with one hard working & driven individual, originally growing up working on his parents rabbit farm in country NSW. He's amassed a portfolio of over 40 properties in 14 years of investing.
He's done this with no financial help from his parents and he stands testament to all Australians and proof that it is possible to achieve financial freedom on all levels regardless of low income scenarios, as Sam didn't earn much working on the rabbit farm in his teens & to his mid 20s.
Once financially free Sam decided to start Australian Property Scout, a buyers agency that is more aggressive on growth locations & using the same strategies he used to build his own portfolio for clients.
In this podcast we also discuss why Sam is buying heavily in the Perth market right now & what his views are of Perth property in the short to medium term.
If you like this interview & enjoy listening to Sam, he's actually recently started his own podcast called "Scouting Australia". You can listen to that here → https://australianpropertyscout.com.au/media/
