I am joined by Willie Mitchell. Willie is the owner of Tofino Resort + Marina, a high-end boutique hotel with adventure in its DNA. He spent 16 years playing hockey as an NHL defenseman and his career peak came with the LA Kings, where he was part of the club’s two Stanley Cup-winning rosters in 2012 and 2014 , he retired in 2016 and took on an entirely different challenge when he and two partners purchased a motel and marina in the small Vancouver Island resort municipality of Tofino.

In this episode Willie talks about his safe haven and his connection with nature, finding his identity, the realities of being in the NHL, learning about business as he went, being known as “Willie Mitchell the hockey player” and feeling like he was more than that, insecurities of not being a great student, and reaching that “high” with the Stanley cup. He also talks about his business and what he learned from being in the hospitality industry.

In 2013, two friends set out to create a company that celebrated grain and bean farmers, while providing a much needed connection to higher quality, fresher flour and dry goods. Flourist was co-founded by Janna Bishop and Shira McDermott, a clothing designer and food industry pro respectively, to fill what they saw as a gap in the growing farm-to-table movement, and to provide transparency in a whole new, untouched food category.

In this episode, we chat about how the two came together and started the business, working with your best friend, how to delegate and lean on your partner, their relationship with food, some of their favourite Flourist items, and whose the better chef. ;)

I am joined by Jessica Opon. Jess has been working in post production for several years now. Starting out as an assistant editor for Defy Media in LA, she worked her way up to being an editor at Vice Media in New York, where she was a piece of the group of “Charlottesville: Race and Terror”, which won an Emmy. She also became an integral part of the production process as a shooter and producer.

Now working as a freelancer, her main focus is editing, but brings her knowledge of producing and shooting to her work. She is an editor for the incredible cooking channel, Binging with Babish, starring Andrew Rae, her partner.

​She was also a fellow dancer, and you can tell that her background as a professional dancer becomes immediately apparent in the delicate, expertly choreographed stories she weaves behind both the camera and the editing desk.

Absolutely loved chatting with Jess. She's such a wise and beautiful person. We talked about the dance world and not so great relationships with food and image, switching industries and going into production and editing, working on YouTube, how editing and dance is more connected than you might think, advice she has for going into the production/entertainment industry, learning to trust yourself, and end with some fun rapid fires like some of the projects she's most proud of!

Back with another episode with Jordan! We talk about the book *heist* that led us to reading "All About Love: New Visions" by the incredible bell hooks. 

We absolutely loved the book and found that we were continuously having conversations about love and how to love not only with each other but with others around us and had to share our perspectives on it. Do note that this is not an extensive review of bell hooks' book or her literature just us touching on some points that she mentions in the book. I am joined by Kelsea. She is half-Chinese and lives in Toronto. With a BFA from OCAD and a lifetime of work in hospitality she currently works in film production but has recently made the big career leap after working for celebrity chef Susur Lee for 10 years as Chief of Staff and Executive Assistant. Whom I interviewed on the podcast earlier! 

She’s currently working on a podcast called Mixed Feelings which is set to air this May, The podcast will cover interviews about representation in film, colourism, food rituals and other topics mixed people sometimes have mixed feelings about growing up in a globalized modern world.

Her big interests are food, hospitality, and media. She is happiest when watching TV or trying new restaurants or recipes. She recently took an online graduate-level course with Boston University in Food Studies on Gender Studies where she specifically focused on Chinese birth and death rituals relating to food and deferred (due to COVID) a 6-month culinary position in France at Ecole Ducasse with Chef Alaine Ducasse. She’s looking forward to what her 30s look like for her and how she’ll be able to blend all of her skills and interests together to create an interesting and exciting future!

Indra is the proud founder of Incluskivity, an organization that provides avalanche safety training to minorities in coastal British Columbia. She is an icon in the local snowsports world, where she consistently advocates for inclusion and diversity in the field.

I am joined by the amazing - Maddie Laver! Yet another dance friend! Maddie and I danced together for several years back in the day. She’s now doing all the things. She is a producer and creative, currently working in Art Direction for Apple. She has 6 years of international production experience, with work ranging from direct-response ads to a 10-episode series on Amazon Prime Video. Maddie approaches her work from a human-first point of view and establishes seamless partnerships with her teams and contractors to create world-class content. Maddie was born in the US but lived, and was educated in Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver, Canada before moving back to the US. She currently lives and works in LA. I know a lot of my listeners are really interested in the producing role, as am I, so I’m super excited for everyone to hear Maddie's journey. 

We chat about growing up in the US then moving to Canada, how College wasn't really for her, feeling lost and unsure what to do career-wise, stepping into the entertainment industry, what 16-year old Maddie would think of herself today, and her best advice for getting into the producing/entertainment scene.
