Well, the most heavenly of musicals is about to descend on southeast Queensland from February next year. Now, I have enjoyed my next guest in shows like We Will Rock You, Chicago, 9 to 5 the Musical, and I am so looking forward to her taking me to heaven this time around.
I’m talking about the one and only Casey Donovan, who is going to be taking up the role of Dolores van Cartier.
00:28
the role made famous by Whoopi Goldberg in Sister Act the musical. And Casey is on the line. Good morning, Casey. Good morning. How are you? Oh, look, I’m excited for this.
I’ve heard some of the music and it is absolutely fabulous. Isn’t it? It’s fabulous, baby, one might say. Well, that’s true. I’m.
00:44
trying to parody all the songs here for you. I love it. Keep them coming. As I said, this is one of the biggest roles that you’ve undertaken.
Now, what drew you to wanting to do this? It really is. Look, lots of things drew me to play this. You know, it was made famous by whoopie Goldberg. The music is amazing.
The storyline is one that I am very, very familiar with. You know, I grew up watching sister act one and two, and maybe back then I planted a seed that one day I’d love to play this character.
01:13
But, um, you know, so many things have drawn me to this show and it’s just such an amazing show. It’s, you know, it’s uplifting. It’s joyful. It’s fun.
It’s a feel good. And I just, I cannot wait to be donning a habit. No. And of course the girl, the girls in the nunnery are going to have a fantastic time with this show.
They surely are. And I’ve been listening to the soundtrack. Of course, the songs are written by Alan Menken, who has written songs for Disney’s Aladdin, Enchanted, The Little Mermaid, and many more. And
01:42
you know, he’s done a modern Motown soul disco twist on the music from this show. So yeah, I’m, I’m looking forward to joining a content.
Yeah. And of course, uh, uh, joining up with the likes of Genevieve Lemon and the fantastic leggy Rhonda Burchmore. I mean, you’re in good pedigree there.
You know what? I’ve been able to be in so many amazing shows with strong female leads. And you know, this show doesn’t falter from that, you know, working on.
02:09
alongside Genevieve and Rhonda is just going to be such an amazing experience and one that I can learn from and one that I can enjoy and know that I am in the company of some of Australia’s best.
Yeah. And of course, when you’re backstage, you can trade stories from the African jungle. We sure bloody can. Now that’s going to follow you around for a while. It sure is. And you know, being a part of the, I’m a celebrity.
02:37
I guess family is just, you know, it’s a joy. We get to go in there and we get to raise money for charities of our choice.
And I think, you know, a little bit of embarrassment and eating some, you know, things that we would could never think of eating in our, in our real lives is, you know, it’s a bond that we all, it’s a lived experience.
We can all, all sit back and laugh about now. Now, obviously when people go along to see Sister Act the musical,
03:00
They’re not going to see Whoopi Goldberg up there because you’re going to put your own spin on it too, aren’t you? I am and I love that about the musical theatre world is that you know as much as I love Whoopi’s rendition of Dolores van Cartier I get to yeah as an actor I get to explore that and and see what that feels like in my skin and my body and you know Whoopi is witty and fast and quick and you know there’s a sassiness but also this
03:27
vulnerability of being back in a convent which I you know it will be lovely to play with as an actor so um you know I’ll try and try and put a little bit of me into it um but yeah we’re just I can’t wait to get it on the floor and get into rehearsals and just see what comes of it and then you know see you guys at the QPAC in February. Exactly and of course as one of the songs in the show says it’s good to be a nun. Sure bloody is.
03:56
Well look, I’ll tell you what, I am looking forward to seeing it. And last time I think I saw you were in Brisbane was in nine to five, the musical. That was a fantastic show too. Oh, it was such a beautiful show and Judy will always have a very special place in my heart and yeah, to be able to back it up with a show like sister act, I think it’s yeah, it’s just going to be amazing. And I love that I can keep, you know, stepping into these really strong, beautiful roles and yeah, keep learning my craft and getting out there and
04:25
entertaining people because that’s what it’s all about. And that’s what you do so well and I think you’ve learned a heck of a lot already and you are an artist who is you know commanding the stage in your own right and I just love that about you, you get up there and you give everything you’ve got. I do, eight times a week so I try to but yeah you know I just I love my job and I love being able to get out there and entertain and just enjoy and love what we do and know that it brings people
04:54
joy and you know two and a half hours of just escaping whatever is outside those walls to just be there enjoy music and enjoy a fabulous show yep exactly and that’s what it’s all about and we can do that when you come to Brisbane in February eight times a week um and and on Sunday Casey Donovan is sleeping all right so don’t call her that’s the monday’s dammit oh monday’s sorry that’s the dead day isn’t it yeah
05:24
It’s gonna be fantastic to see it and as we said raise the voice which I know you will do and We can get our tickets to get along and see the show great to chat with you And you know as I said, you know, we can’t wait to see you kicking the habit. All right Thank you so much for joining us on the program. Thanks There we go. Casey Donovan out starring as a Dolores van can’t hear in sister actor musical coming to a QPAC in February
05:52
of 2025. Make sure you get your tickets now and check out the website. It is going to be a fantastic show to see on stage back with more in a moment.

In today’s episode, we dive into a lively conversation with Jennifer Howard MP for Ipswich. She discusses her recent travels, including a visit to Roma, highlighting efforts to connect Queensland’s agriculture and gas industries with export opportunities.
Jennifer shares exciting news about cost of living payments, with Queensland residents receiving substantial rebates on electricity bills and public transport fares. We also explore community initiatives like Rosie’s blanket drive and the significant funding from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund for local organisations.
Jennifer talks about the impact of e-waste recycling in Ipswich, the school breakfast program, and the five-year anniversary of Ripley Valley State Secondary College. She also provides positive updates on elective wait times at Ipswich Hospital.
Lastly, we look ahead to the Queensland Treasurer’s upcoming budget luncheon in Ipswich, a key event before the state government election. Tune in for all this and more!
00:00
It is time for the state of play and I tell you what I’m very pleased to say that joining us on the phone this morning from the seat of Ipswich is Jennifer Howard MP. Good morning Jen. Morning David, how are you going? I am very well. You’ve been tripping around the state keeping busy I see. I have actually. I was out in Roma for a Tisby event, which is the Tornbush Surat Basin Enterprise Group.
00:24
in Roma talking about the work trade and investment Queensland are doing helping connect Queensland agriculture and gas industries with export opportunities. Fantastic, well it certainly is a progressive area there so you know lots to talk about and we’ve got lots to talk about.
00:40
Of course, one of the big things is that the cost of living payments that we’re all going to be getting very soon to bring down the cost of living. Yeah, it really is making a big difference for people’s lives already with the rebate we had last year for electricity. But this year, as everyone knows, starting from the 1st of July, we’ll receive $1,000 from the state government and an additional $300 from the federal government off their electricity bill, which is phenomenal. So many of residents in Ipswich have.
01:06
have approached me to say that, oh, but our electricity bill is already quite small due to solar panels and things like that. But that will sit in credit for households until it’s used up. Hopefully people will have a long time before they have to pay an electricity bill. Exactly, and only 50 cents to hop on a bus. Yep, or a train. So, you know, I was talking to commuters just late last week about what that means to them. One woman I spoke to who catches the train every day to travel to Brisbane, like so many Ipswich people.
01:33
and she told me that she’s worked out she’ll save over $1,200 in six months. Wow, that is crazy. I think it’s going to be a game changer as well. And the idea behind these type of initiatives is that rather than just giving people a lump sum payment where you’ve got that payment, you tend to spend it and that will then sort of have a on flow effect to inflation. So we want to avoid that from happening, which is why we’re doing the rebates in these ways. So it’s, you know,
01:59
It will help, we know that there’s still a lot of pressures on people out there and this isn’t going to solve it all but it will help. Exactly it certainly will and of course with the temperatures coming down, I’ll tell you what it was a bit cool earlier this week but Rosie’s blanket drive is on and it’s a good time for us to get some of those old blankets out and make a donation. Yeah we do that well I mean Rosie’s do it I think in Brisbane every year but we started doing it in Ipswich last
02:28
So we’ve got all sorts of interesting things delivered to our office, by the way. So I do, I would really stipulate that we just restrict it to blankets and, you know, things that help keep people warm. We don’t really need toasters or some of the other unusual things that were dropped off, but these are the things that we need. My office is open from nine to five, Monday to Friday. And I know that there’s people out there who are sleeping rough or even people who just
02:55
really struggling to afford to pay for those necessary blankets. Even though they have a roof over their head they’re still struggling and Rosie supports those people as well so you know donate and drop them into my office. Exactly there’s also been some fantastic news for local Ipswich community organizations who got some funding through the gambling commission benefit fund. Yeah we did so it was over $170,000 locally for local organizations here.
03:23
with the Gambling Community Benefit Fund, I was really pleased to see some of those organizations that just do so much in our community get some benefits. And as I always say, you know, it’s a little always a little bit controversial when it comes to gambling locally, and I have my concerns as well. But at the end of the day, if our community organizations can benefit from some of that money, I’m really happy to support it. Yeah, exactly. And
03:49
Brothers Cricket Club getting $12,500, the Campfire Healing Indigenous Corporation $13,400, the City of Ipswich Pony Club $35,000, Grand Air, Ipswich Vigor Association $34,000, $9,000 for the Nepalese Cricket Club $34,000 for the Broderick Street Preschool and of course $34,000, nearly $35,000 for IRASI. It’s fantastic.
04:19
You know, they really are the fabric of our city. So good on them. Yeah, exactly. Let’s look at a couple of other topics before we have to wrap it up this morning. But the e-waste connection now what’s happening then in that area? Yeah. So I think money now and it’s switched for a couple of years. They’ve got a really good location down in North Bufal and Monique is the person who’s
04:42
behind the establishment of it here in Ipswich. They did have one over in Kenmore. I met the new manager, David. What they do is they take in sort of electronic waste that nobody wants anymore. At the moment, they’ve got hundreds of the old NBN boxes. And they give people who are living with a disability an opportunity to do meaningful work in recycling these electronical items. And it’s really terrific. They actually…
05:10
needing more volunteers though from the community to come and help supervise. That all they need is like an hour or half a day, one day a week if they’ve got it to come down and give them a hand. They’re also keen to see more participants. Our special schools go there Tuesdays and Thursdays to also get to do a bit of work and see what they’re doing down there. So it really is a fantastic organization and what’s being done now in the recycling space is so impressive.
05:38
And this is just one example of some of that impressive work that’s been done. Yeah, it certainly is. Now, the school breakfast program, this sounds like a yummy addition to the calendar. Yeah, so we just refunded YCare basically, which is a branch of the YMCA who provide breakfast programs to schools across the Ypswich electorate. So, you know, I’ve often volunteered at some of these schools in the morning. We all know that, you know, children who have…
06:06
who’ve, you know, who’ve got a full tummy are more likely to sit still and learn in the classroom. So it really is a no-brainer and the YCare do a great job running these programs. So the schools locally are Blair, Bremer State High School, Bundamba State School, Churchill, Clement Special School, Ipswich Central State School, Ipswich East State School, I think Ipswich Special School, Ipswich West State Special School and Ipswich West State School all participate in that breakfast program. That’s just in my electorate alone.
06:35
They do great work, you know, they give a nutritious breakfast to the kids and they get a good start to the day. Fantastic. Now last Thursday, you were at the five year anniversary celebrations of Ripley Valley State Secondary College and incidentally, it also coincided with the 100 days until the inaugural year 12 cohort finish at the school. Yeah, yeah, it was really lovely. It’s a great school that one. All of the schools in Ritz which are fantastic in my opinion.
07:04
But it’s the first time in my time as a local member where I’ve got to see a foundation school, you know, five years down the track. You know, we opened these new schools to much fanfare, but it’s just, there’s something really special about reflecting on the last five years. Principal Brendan Kruger is outstanding, and he gave a really lovely speech. And you could tell that he was actually very invested emotionally in the kids.
07:31
and really wanted to see them have a good start in life. And I can tell you, we also, while we were there, we had our first tour of their new performing arts centre. I think it was about $19 million, state government money for this beautiful performing arts centre. Fantastic. At the school, state of the art, like really outstanding. And it is available for the public if they want to use it. So yeah, great to see.
07:56
I’ll tell you what, I was jealous when I saw the cake that they had too, so yum yum. I’ll have to remember to save your piece. You might have to, yes. Before we let you go, some good news on our health front and there’s been a lot of negativity towards our health system in Queensland, but we’re seeing some of those elective wait times drop at the Ipswich Hospital. Yeah, we know that the satellite hospital is playing a role in that, in terms of the Ipswich ED.
08:24
But data has shown those improvements. You know, you can’t argue with the data. So median wait times for the March 2024 quarter compared to the same period last year, you know, before the satellite hospital opened, despite the increase in the population and the number of patients visiting EDs, then in the 2023 March quarter, 25,972 people went through. Now we’ve got 27,117 in the March 2020 quarter.
08:53
24 quarter. So that’s 1060 more category two presentations. 65% of all ED patients were seen within clinically recommended times in the March 2024 quarter, which is up from 62% in the same period last year. And that’s 100% of category one patients, you know, that includes 100% of category one patients. So, you know, elective surgery patients treated within clinically recommended times increased from 91% in March last year.
09:22
to 95% in March this year. So, you know, I think that’s something to be proud of. We have the most incredible teams of health frontline workers in Ipswich. I’m always blown away by their commitment. And I know it’s difficult for them. You know, they do have, you know, a lot of challenges, a lot of hurdles to overcome, but I’m behind them 100% and the Miles government is behind them because, you know, we’re investing in health.
09:48
Yep, certainly before I let you go, I do know that next week, the Queensland Treasurer Cameron Dick is going to be handing down the budget. Lots of people are going to be looking at that and that’s the last one before the state government election in October. But we do get a chance to actually meet Cameron Dick for the Ipswich budget luncheon. Yes, we do. He’s coming here on the 27th of June. It’ll be at Brothers Leagues Club.
10:18
And it’ll be a great opportunity to hear firsthand from the treasure, as you say, on just how the budget will affect our community here locally. Yes, and no doubt a chance for our local politicians to go, please sir, can I have some more? Yeah, we do that. We do spend quite a bit of time annoying him. Yeah, good affection. But you know, it’s worth it. And he does listen.
10:47
I do think that, you know, cost of living is going to be a priority for this one in particular rather, you know, than sort of, you know, the big ticket sort of items. But we do need to get through this crisis that we’re currently experiencing at the moment. We certainly do. Put it in your diary, 27th of June at Brothers Leagues Club and you can get your tickets through. Try booking details on Jennifer’s Facebook page. So just jump onto Facebook and search Jennifer Howard MP.
11:16
Jen, always good to catch up with you and we’ll look forward to doing it again soon. Yes, lovely. Stay warm and have a great day. Thank you so much, Jennifer Howard, MP4 Ipswich. You are with the West Brammer Radio Brecky crew back with more in a moment.

On the Breakky show here on West Bremer Radio streaming live on the app and also on Amazon, Alexa and Google Smart Home speakers. Time for our weekly check-in with Ipswich City Council and Mayor Teresa Harding. Good morning. Morning, Damo. It is good to talk to you and I tell you what, congratulations to the council because it has won a new business award. It has. We have been named Innovator of the Year at the inaugural 2024 Queensland Small Business Friendly Awards. Just for ensuring our
00:28
and supporting our small business community. So it’s a really great thing to see. And of course that’s part of the Ipswich Central Revitalisation Project. I mean, council’s been working hard in that space to really bring it to fruition, hasn’t it? We have, and certainly Council Marnie Doyle has been spearheading a lot of that work to get that revitalisation back into our CBD and getting people back in here. And look, we were the first council back in 2020 to become the first small business friendly council in Queensland. And we’re also the first council…
00:56
in Queensland to implement and provide a test and trial street patio program. And that’s that’s been really popular as well as we’ve designed a footpath extension to activate the outdoor trade in support of small businesses. So it creates a new space for people to sit in and engage with the community. It’s been really popular. It certainly has. I’ve sat in that a couple of times and I’ve enjoyed myself immensely. So in fact, it was very nice for council to put it right across the road from our studios here. That’s right. We also ran the park parking day trial.
01:24
Over three days, it converted six car parks into public spaces where the community could enjoy outdoor dining, music, art. We engaged the Ipswich Plant Swap Community Group and the Ipswich Central Partnerships to transform the bays. And we took excessive engagement to ensure these initiatives were supported by the business owners and the community. And I really appreciate people voting and we had dot-mocracy boards and voting jars. So we really appreciate everyone participating in that. And it was really lovely to receive that state award.
01:53
Yeah, it is good and also, you know, to our small business community, they are the heart and soul of the community and they need all of the help we can give them at the moment. Absolutely. We have these wonderful businesses, small businesses in the top of town in the CBD and they’re the businesses that employ people, provide our services. They also, they’re the ones sponsoring the local sports clubs and scouting groups and things like that. So it’s really important that we continue to support businesses. It certainly is.
02:20
We do that too of course with getting people to come to Ipswich and also provide reasons for people to get out of their houses and at the moment we’ve got the Festival of Horsepower but just around the corner, I can’t believe it’s already here, the Spark Festival. Yes certainly June is the the month of the Festival of Horsepower but we do have to prepare for July which is the Spark Ipswich Festival, that’s our annual cultural and arts festival, it’s getting bigger and bigger each year and it’s over 11 days from the 4th of July.
02:48
Now, of course, it is one of the signature festivals. And of course, it joins, you know, the likes of planes, trains and autos and the Festival of Horsepower. And it really does, you know, create that creative flair within the city, doesn’t it? It does. We try to get the programming and activations right. We’ve listened to residents, but also the creative community and what we can do. And this year’s program is a mix of returning favourites and three fresh new events. We have circuit, which is music in many places. We’ll see.
03:16
pulsating beats played across 15 unique venues across Ipswich Central. We have something new, the Teddy Bears Picnic, where children and their families are invited to bring their favourite teddy, a picnic rug, and brunch to enjoy the entertainment on offer. And a locally created interactive fibre arts garden for children with reading and craft and play activities called A World of My Own at the Queen’s Park Environmental Education Centre. So there’s three new activities that are being brought along. And of course, many of the old favourites, coming back to you,
03:45
One of the big ones is Delight, and that’s where we see those large scale projections on buildings. Yeah, Delight’s been very popular, and our local artists compete very heavily for that, so it’s great to showcase local artists on our local building. So Delight will be showing the local artworks in Darcy Dole Place for a second year with the projections on 143 Brisbane Street, as well as St Paul’s and Lichon Church.
04:09
we’ll have a record-breaking 17 local artists artwork that we profiled as part of the initiative. So it’s looking forward to that. Wow, fantastic. And of course, the World of Music Ipswich, that really sees that one day festival just turn Springfield Central alive. Yeah, it’s in Springfield Central. And it’s a great place to be. It’s a one day World Music Festival. It’s always really full. And we also will have the little day out again, as well, which is for young kids, they come along and sing and dance and create and play and
04:38
The Common People Dancer Stedford is back with local people in training now and practicing. So that should be lots of fun as well. More sequins and spandex that you can poke a stick at, that’s for sure. Absolutely, and lots of fluoro. Exactly. If you want further information on the full program of events across the city, jump on to smarkipswich.com.au for all the details. And you just mentioned the Queen’s Park Environmental Education Centre.
05:06
celebrating a big birthday milestone. That’s right, to all nature lovers, this Wednesday, the 5th of June, is World Environment Day. And it’s also the Queen’s Park Environment Education Centre, which is just next to the cafe. It’s its 15th birthday. So the doors first opened on the 5th of June, 2009, and we’ll be celebrating that. So we’re welcoming anyone from the community who’d like to come along from 10.45 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. to drop in, have a piece of cake, and just share what’s been there.
05:34
Certainly the last 12 months we’ve had over 21,000 visitors come there. It’s a very popular part of our city. Yeah. And of course, including many schools and groups that come through there. And of course we’ve got to, you know, take our hats off to the hardworking staff, especially all the volunteers in on the back of volunteers week to see, you know, without them, it just wouldn’t happen. We have amazing volunteers there in our bush care and land care and it’s their dedication, enthusiasm that really makes it a special place for the community to visit. And even there too on.
06:04
at Queen’s Park, you know, the glass house there by the Glebe Garden community there. It’s really great to see everyone come together. And we’re also running a few things like a free drop in Pugletime program. It’s World UNESCO Environment Day. And the theme is generation restoration this year, which explores the way that we can grow forests, revive water sources and bring back soil. So a really great theme, I think, for Wednesday. And apart from all of these wonderful things, too, I mean, we see so much else happening. I know that you were.
06:30
out at the Riverview neighborhood watch for the muscle immaculata on the weekend. And did I see you getting out of a high speed roadster on Willard Mac Raceway? Yes, we launched the festival horsepower on Saturday night at the Queensland Raceway. And there was a Porsche GT4 RS that we all got to be a passenger in. We didn’t drive them, drive them, Jameau, myself, Councillor Pai Augustine and Councillor Dave Cullen, who you know is an absolute car nut.
06:58
had a ride in them. So it was, and they actually opened it up for everyone else who was there as well. So it was a great time. And the next day at Muscle Maculata, the blue skies came out, there was no rain. So it was a perfect time for everyone to bring up their muscle cars and display them and chat. And it was a really great day. Well, I don’t know about you, but you couldn’t wipe the smile off Councillor Pine Augustine’s face, that’s for sure. She liked the adrenaline rush. I think, I think her dog went very, very fast. Yes, I think she would have liked to have taken that Porsche home. But anyway.
07:26
Listen, always good to catch up with you. And we look forward to doing it again next week. Thanks, Damo. Thanks to listeners. There we go, Mayor Teresa Harding joining us on the program. We’ll take a break back with more in a moment.

Join us in this episode as we chat with Senior Constable Chantelle Dowell about the upcoming community safety workshops for seniors, hosted by the Ipswich District Crime Prevention Unit and Ipswich City Council. These free workshops will cover vital topics such as crime prevention, personal safety, reducing social isolation, and disaster preparedness. Mark your calendars for June 5th, 12th, and 19th at various locations across Ipswich. Featuring expert guest speakers like Sergeant Nadine Webster, Dr. Leanda Mitchell, and Annabel Johnston, these sessions are designed to empower seniors with the knowledge to feel safe and secure. Don’t miss out—tune in for more details on how to register!
00:00
And on the line this morning, Senior Constable Shantelle Dowell. How are you? Good. How are you? I am exceptionally well. And well, all I can say is, thank goodness it’s Monday. I know most people say thank God it’s Friday, but I wanted to be different. Well, when you have kids, you know, someday they’re back at school, right? Well, that’s right. So you can cheer and holler and go, yay, another five days. I know. Now, of course, you’ve got some community safety workshops coming up for seniors.
00:29
Yeah, the Ipswich District Crime Prevention Unit, we’re assisting Ipswich City Council in the delivery of community safety workshops for seniors at various locations across the Ipswich District. That is great and of course there are three workshops I believe throughout the month of June. Yeah. With the topics including crime prevention and personal safety, reducing social isolation and loneliness and disaster preparedness, all very important topics for our seniors.
00:57
That’s it. The community safety workshops aim to engage seniors to build self-confidence while providing an opportunity to gain information to empower themselves and to learn how to feel safe and secure in the community. Now, of course, you’ve got some wonderful guest speakers, one I happen to know. So do you want to tell us who’s going to be on the bill? So we have Sergeant Nadine Webster. She’s the Crime Prevention Coordinator here in our office. Yep. Dr. Leanda Mitchell. She’s the Senior Lecturer of
01:26

Join us as we catch up with Division 3 Councillor Marnie Doyle! In this episode, we dive into the latest happenings around Ipswich. Councillor Doyle discusses the post-election buzz, ongoing redevelopment projects, and the vibrant reopening of the Ipswich Art Gallery featuring Kiraleigh Robinson’s fascinating “Elsewhere” exhibition. Plus, we celebrate the touching tribute to WWII veteran Keith Pennell with a newly unveiled plaque, and gear up for the 15th birthday bash of the Queen’s Park Environmental Education Centre. Tune in for all this and more on our community-focused update!
00:00
It is time for us to have a little look at what’s been happening in your division and we’re going to division three and Councillor Marnie Doyle. Good morning. Good morning guys. Yeah good to chat to you and we haven’t actually chatted since the election So you’ve been extremely busy. What with the the redevelopment in the CBD and that haven’t you? Yeah, absolutely Hit the ground running post-election, you know, the office was still busy during the election period residents
00:27
across Division 3 are very active. So yeah, things just kept moving and straight back into it. Exactly. Doing good work. Yeah. Well, look, it’s good to see also that the Ipswich Art Gallery has reopened after getting all of the LED lighting installed. And it’s open with this new exhibition. Yeah, it’s great. So Ipswich-based artist, Kirralee Robinson, has a new art exhibition called Elsewhere, which is running through.
00:55
the 4th of August and it’s free and you don’t have to book. There’s an opening event on the 1st of June, head to the Pitch Art Gallery website for all of the details. Fantastic and Kirralee’s work features a series of minimalist and futuristic sculptures that have been crafted from industrial materials. Would you be a sight to see? Yeah absolutely, a world where discarded objects are transformed into art.
01:22
challenging you know disposability and celebrating curiosity and I love those types of exhibitions and seeing you know that really subjective interpretation that the artists bring to life. And of course if people haven’t gone along to the Ipswich Art Gallery why not because there is always something wonderful to see and some innovative exhibitions on display.
01:45
Yeah, absolutely head to the Ipswich Art Gallery website. The program is regularly updated and there’s lots of really exciting programming coming through particularly with school holidays just around the corner. Yes and of course lots for the kids to do there at the gallery as well. So check it all out at the Ipswich Art Gallery and of course you can go along and see that each and every day and largely it’s free. Now Keith Pennell, Plark, this is the council.
02:12
who has unveiled a new plant to recognise this well-known World War II vet. Yeah, really excited to see this project to fruition. Keith Pannell was one of our World War II veterans and a long-standing member of the Bundamba ANZAC Observance Committee. And so former councillor Andrew Fechner and I worked closely with the Observance Committee, including Keith, and everyone was very sad when Keith passed. So one of our…
02:40
ideas for our provisional projects councils get monies to spend so we come about the plaque idea so it was great to see that unveiled finally. Yeah and of course Mr. Pennell spent three years in active service during World War Two in the Pacific and served in Japan following the atomic bombing so he was right in the thick of things wasn’t he? He was and he was Ipswich citizen of the year in 2008.
03:06
deeply respected within the community and miss following his death in 2022. So he was a life member of the Ipswich RSL sub branch and like I said a very active committee member with the Binsambar Observance Committee, Brad Strong, who heads up that committee, brought the bugle along for the unveiling ceremony for the plaque and it was a very moving little ceremony and it was lovely. Residents actually came out from their homes that surround the park.
03:34
stood in their driveway as Brad paid the last post. It was just beautiful. Well that is great. Go and check it out. The new plaque is in the North Booval Park there and it is great to see that come to fruition after the hard work that you and former Councillor Andrew Fechner put into getting that as a reality. Something else we’ve got to celebrate too is the Queen’s Park Environmental
04:03
I know, first opened its doors in 2009, doesn’t seem that long ago, but to celebrate the milestone of welcoming the community to come and celebrate the birthday with us on Wednesday the 5th of June, which is also World Environment Day. Of course, and it’s also State of Origin Day too.
04:22
Well, I did not know that, but thank you for the heads up. There you go. You can go along and celebrate the Environmental Education Centre, then go off and watch the game as well. You can. And, you know, we’re really, really proud of the Queen’s Park Environmental Education Centre. In the past 12 months, we’ve had over 21,000 visitors come through and the programming offerings at the Education Centre are constantly refreshed. And, yeah, it’s a really great…
04:51
place to visit for families. It certainly is and of course they have a lot of school excursions that go to the centre now as well including a guided tour of the nearby Ipswich Nature Centre which has been doing good business too so those excursions offered three days a week and are very popular with school groups and that so people need to register to go along and
05:13
be a part of the 15th birthday celebrations don’t they? Yeah I invite everyone to jump on Council’s website and register their interest because it is an enormous achievement wonderful milestone for Ipswich. It certainly is. Hey listen great to chat to you today to update us on some of the things happening in Div 3.
05:30
and we look forward to doing it right throughout the next four years. I look forward to catching up with you guys also. It’s always lots of fun. It’s love sharing all the wonderful things going on around our beautiful city. It certainly is. Marnie, thank you so much. And you take care. Thanks, guys. There we go. Div 3 Councillor, Marnie Doyle joining us there to take a little look at what’s happening in your division.

We catch up with Jordan MP, Charis Mullen, for the latest updates in our State of Play segment, starting with the introduction of 50 cent public transport fares launching on August 5th, covering all bus, train, ferry, tram, and on-demand services. Charis shares the positive responses from commuters and highlights the significant savings this will bring to many.
We also dive into the official opening of two new buildings at Spring Mountain State School, a rapidly growing institution now serving over 700 students. These state-of-the-art facilities, including innovative learning spaces and nature play areas, mark a significant milestone for the community.
Lastly, we celebrate the success of the Greater Springfield Festival, a multicultural event organised by the Bharath Cultural Society, which saw over 15,000 attendees and 700 performances. Charis also teases the upcoming announcement of the Jordan Local Business Awards winners, recognising the hard work and dedication of local businesses.
00:00
You’re on the West Bremer Radio Breckie crew. And of course, we are coming to you live on west streaming live on the app and also on Amazon Alexa and Google Smart Home speakers. It is time for the state of play. And we head to the seat of Jordan and MP Charis Mullen. Good morning. Good morning, Damien. Always good to be with you on this bright, sunny morning. It certainly is. We’ll probably get a little bit of rain over the weekend, but we can handle that, can’t we? Absolutely. Exactly.
00:29
Now good news too that we can handle and that is these 50 cent public transport fees. Yeah very exciting and I have to tell you I’ve been getting some terrific responses. So we are lowering translating public transport fares to 50 cents per trip from the 5th of August and that’ll be across bus, train, ferry, tram and on-demand services. And it doesn’t matter how long the distance is, is it? That’s right so the transfer of services is included in that 50 cents.
00:58
So you know you can actually travel all the way up to the Sunshine Coast if that’s what you’d like to do But it is an actual terrific opportunity and we know it’s going to make a really big difference particularly with cost of living pressures at the moment And so many people and it’s switching commute You know to work or use the train to get to events in the city or catch the bus to school And we know that’ll be a great benefit to them It certainly will and I know you’ve been out and about on the local station platforms all over the place
01:27
Chatting to commuters and they seem very excited about it. Yeah, a lot of them have said they can’t wait That seems to be the the general feel Most people seem to know about it as well, which is great So I think it’s proven very popular and the message is definitely out there But you know, I spoke to a young woman who told me that she sent $150 a week on On public transport. Yeah. Yeah, so that will now be you know, you know, but you know $5
01:54
that she will be spending so that is a massive savings for people. And of course it saves you on parking too, I know that in Brisbane the average there is around about $79 a day to park. I know it’s really high parking costs particularly in the CBD, so we think that this will be a great benefit to a lot of people and you know I actually really enjoy getting on a train because you can do some work on there, on the way in, you can read a book it’s actually a great way to travel.
02:24
Now what I want you to do, Charis, is organize to get the CityCats to actually go down the Bremer, join up and transfer to Brisbane. How lovely would that be? I’ve got to say there is nothing like a lovely ferry ride across Brisbane, but yes, how lovely would it be if we could extend it all the way down? I’m not sure that’s in the planning at this time, but yeah.
02:45
We really should be utilizing our rivers actually a lot more I think for travel. Well I agree so have a little whisper in the Transport Minister’s ear, right? I will, I will. Now Spring Mountain State School, this week you went along to officially open two brand new buildings. Yes we did, rapidly growing Spring Mountain State School because what we’ve seen is a rapidly growing suburb there, the Spring Mountain suburb is fast growing.
03:13
Over the past five years, we’ve grown that school, would you believe, from about 50 students to now over 700. Wow. So we really have needed these brand new buildings. And they are absolutely spectacular. State-of-the-art facilities, innovative learning spaces. It’s been really fantastic to see. And very excited was the new principal, Sheree Moore. Of course, the school staff there on hand, and the builders as well.
03:40
Yeah, so what’s really interesting about these buildings, Damian, is that they were prefabricated. So for the most part built off site and brought on site. And I’ve got to tell you, you cannot tell the difference. So it’s actually a really great and easy way to build these days, but also it’s less problematic for the school because they don’t have that sort of massive construction happening on their site whilst kids are still around playing and learning. So we’ve got two new buildings and new buildings.
04:09
two-story learning centre. It’s got 16 learning spaces in it and then we’ve got another new two-story prep building for our lovely youngest learners and that’s four new learning spaces and a fantastic new outdoor playground. They’re very much into nature play at Spring Mountain State School and so it’s been just lovely to see just what a great space that that will be for all of the students. Well congratulations to all of the staff and students at Spring Mountain State School.
04:37
on the addition of those two new buildings. And also the Greater Springfield Festival. It was held a few weeks ago. It was a massive success, wasn’t it? Yeah, it really was. I mean, I just want to really give a shout out to the organizers of this festival, Barnum Cultural Society. They’re one of our really wonderful kind of Indian community organizations. And I really want to emphasize just what an incredible event this was. You know, it started about 11 years ago. It was a much smaller, modest event.
05:07
and it was there to really celebrate our Indian and Tamil New Year, but it has grown into a major multicultural festival in Greater Springfield. Yeah, and I know everyone had a fantastic time, didn’t they? They really did. I mean, this is kind of, the stats are actually unbelievable. Over 700 performances, 60 stalls, close to 100 performances on the day, and I think their estimation of the number of people who’ve been there,
05:33
visited Greater Springfield, around 15,000 people attended. So I have to tell you this has become a real signature event for the Greater Springfield area and it’s one that the Queensland Government has been really proud to support. We’re a big proud supporter of the event under our Celebrating Multicultural Events program and Ipswich City Council as well, along with some of our local businesses as well who popped on. But it was a huge, huge day. Fantastic.
06:00
Well look, speaking of local businesses, it would be remiss of me not to quiz you on how the final day or two of the Jordan Local Business Awards is going. I tell you, it is gonna be close. But we have had thousands of votes coming in for our business awards. 30 finalists, we’re down now to effectively choosing the 10 winners in each of the categories.
06:26
it’s been fierce competition and i can feel a lot of the business that they have been breaking themselves uh… but they’ve got a lot of very and supportive customers they’ve all been getting on inviting for them it’s going to be very exciting i don’t know the final result yet and i’m gonna like hold off now and white that’s a bit of a surprise for me as well uh… but it’s been a wonderful opportunity to small business month really support our local people you know it is a bit of a tough environment out there for them at the moment
06:56
But they are doing an incredible job and the community is showing lots and lots of love and support through our Jordan Local Business Awards. I’m really pleased with how this has gone and I hope to bring it back again next year if I can. Fantastic. Now, when are you doing the big announcement? So we will close, obviously they close the voting, we’ll close the voting 5pm on Friday.
07:19
And then I’m hoping to release it hopefully even on Saturday because I just think the business can’t wait To find out what’s happening. So looking to hopefully do that and then I’m going to host a special event for all of the women Oh, that is awesome. Well, we’ll try and interview a couple of the winning businesses as well. Oh, that’d be terrific I’m sure they’d really appreciate that support as well. Well our office will talk to your office and we’ll do lunch How’s that sound that sounds?
07:47
Cherise, always good to chat and we appreciate your time this morning. Thank you, Damien. Lovely to always speak with you. Thank you. Uh, the Jordan MP, Charis Mullen joining us there for the state of play. We’ll take a break back with more in a moment.

Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn. I want the truth! You can’t handle the truth!
00:09
how it’s making me feel. All right, everyone. Here we go. Let’s do it on a Wednesday morning. The Limelight Cinema’s podcast, Damo and Lex. Good morning. All right. Let’s talk movies. All right. First of all, we’re going to talk about that The Garfield movie starring Chris Pratt and Samuel L. Jackson and Alexis. I feel like I should have opened just then with like meow.
00:39
Good meowning. No, I’m glad you didn’t. You’re so welcome. I just did anyway. I think that’s a bit of the action that you’re going to see on the big screen this week with Garfield. Of course we have the Monday hating, lasagna loving our favourite feline friend Garfield who is being voiced by Chris Pratt who we recently saw last year in Super Mario Brothers as Mario himself.
01:09
Um, which we’ve also got, uh, joining us is Vic Garfield’s dad, long lost father who dumped him on the doorstep of, um, his human who currently looks after him and has come back to reunite and go on a- What’s the human’s name? Badass adventure. John. I remembered. I’m good at this. I’m good at my job sometimes. Um, we did have a Sony foundation, um, charity screening of this over the weekend.
01:35
We’ve had such fantastic responses from the everyone enjoyed it. There were so many giggles happening in that cinema. It was such a fun time for both adults and kids, for those of us who have grown up with Garfield and those who are only just being introduced to the world of Garfield and all of the hairballs and the delightful things that come with them. Garfield had to say hairballs. There’s always a Hebel. There’s cats involved. How’d you breakfast?
02:02
Fair enough. Well, I’ll let you two to discuss hairballs. Will I tell everyone that’ll be hitting the big screens as of tomorrow and you can get tickets on lime to go along and see Garfield, the movie. Hold on to your seats, folks. It should be a good one. Now we’ve got an American in Paris, the musical. Of course, this has got an all star cast as well.
02:27
Yes, now we’ve been running our musical seasons for a little while now, and this is the second last of our musical seasons. So American in Paris from tomorrow, just for special screenings for tomorrow, and then our last one, which will be 42nd Street next month. And that will be the end of our musicals, although we do have coming at the end of August, start of September, Andre Rieu is coming back to the big screen. So it is not the end of musicals completely for us in the land of cinemas.
02:55
just the end of our world’s greatest musical seasons, which we’ve been running for a couple of months now. And we’ve really enjoyed seeing this. We’ve had Titanic back on the big screen. We also got obviously American and Paris and 42nd Street ahead of us. So some really great musicals on the big screen. And I say this every time, it’s the best way to see them. If you’re not going to the real thing, it’s the next best thing. Yeah, it certainly is. And of course, this was a Tony Award winning a Broadway musical.
03:22
And, uh, inspired by the Oscar winning MGM film and has some of the great music from George and Ira Gershwin, including swan and I got rhythm. I got music. I got my girl who could ask for anything more. Yeah. Uh, so you’ll be able to go along and hear all of those. Sorry. What was that? They most serenading us. This is my favorite part of the show. Every week. Yeah. Well, I try my hardest. So.
03:49
Look, get along and see it. American in Paris, the musical. And that’ll be, when, when’s that on Alexis? We’ve got one special screening tomorrow morning at 10 30 AM. Fantastic. Don’t forget Mad Max Furiosa is in cinemas now as well. And also what we’ve got high queue dumpster battle. Is that it? Yes. High queue dumpster battle. Now we keep getting this mixed up with dumpster fire.
04:17
Don’t know myself and our marketing coordinator go, high Q dumpster dumpster dumpster. Nope. Now anime has become such a popular genre. We’ve seen a boy and the heron, which of course comes from the team at studio Ghibli and absolutely huge animation studio. And we’ve also got this week high Q dumpster battle. Now this is an incredibly popular anime coming to the big screen in both subbed and dubbed versions.
04:45
And we do have a range of screenings across the whole week. So for those who are coming along for the dubbed versions, obviously English dubbed for those and subbed, we will have subtitles on the screen. Whatever your preference, we find that our anime fans absolutely love the subbed versions because it’s the most authentic, you know, original version of the film, but for our families who do want to come along and see Haikyuu Dumpster Battle, they do prefer it in the dubbed version. So we have a range available right through the weekend.
05:13
Um, and for this first relief of the movie release of the movie as well. Also, I, I, Damo, I know you’ve just noted, Furiosa, I have to just note that this movie over the weekend has absolutely gone gangbusters on the audience reviews for this. We, on Saturday morning, I was checking rotten tomatoes and it was sitting at 97% certified fresh on rotten tomatoes. And the critic score was at 89%. And those critics can be pretty harsh. So.
05:43
Some absolutely fantastic reviews for the movie. I loved it. I would go and see it again. And I watched it with our brilliant electrician who was helping us with our installation of our laser projectors. And I showed him the first 10 minutes and he goes, I would just, I don’t want to leave now. He, he watched the first 10 minutes. He’s like, so do I have to go to work today? It just looks so great on the big screen. Fair enough. Now taking you back to Haiku, the dumpster battle, what an all star cast.
06:11
We’ve got Kaito Ishikawa, Yuki Kaji, Yuichi Nakamura, Haseo Egawa, Koki Uchiyama and Ayumi Murase, who are all starring in this. And the director, by the way, is Susumu Mitsunaka. So if you want to go and see Haiku, the Dumps to Battle. Now you’re just showing off, Damo. Thank you so much. Round of applause, Damo. That was impressive.
06:40
Thank you so much. So I’m here all week. Uh, yes. Don’t forget also next week. It’s the big battle on the rugby pitch. Yes. Uh, the, uh, state of origin, eh? Yeah. State of origin on the big screen. We’ve already started selling tickets for this. So we’ve got, of course, New South Wales versus Queensland and the biggest battle that we see in our NRL.
07:04
We are so excited for this. I actually had noted that most of the games, I think all three of the games are now sold out. So this is the next best thing to get up on the big screen. We are doing tickets at just $10 each and that includes your drink on arrival. Otherwise there is also a $20 package, which includes a drink and hot dog when you come along and watch it on the big screen. Of course, our bar will be open right through the screening as well to catch all the action on the big screen. Fantastic. Instead of just booking for the first game, why not book for three games?
07:34
Game one, June five, game two, June 26, Gangory, July 17th. You can get your tickets and secure your seat to the big game, the state of origin, as New South Wales and Queensland clash on the rugby league field. And you can do that on limelightcinemas.com.au
07:52
Alex is always good to chat and I’ll look forward to doing it next week. Such pleasure. Talk to you next week. All right. There you go. Done and dusted for another week. The Limelight Cinema’s podcast and we’ll be back with more action in a moment. Stay with us.
