  • Signal For Help, Teens at Christmas, Surviving a Layoff, & Sober Holidays
You’ve likely seen the viral Signal for Help that women have been sharing on social media since the pandemic started but you probably don’t know that this initiative was created by the Canadian Women’s Foundation. Pamela Di Pinto is the manager of the Signal for Help and joins me today to share how it started, some very public success stories of it working, and more importantly how you should respond should someone send you this signal.
Christmas with teens can be challenging for both sides. Parents are often left shellshocked as their sweet excitable child is replaced by a sullen anti-social teen, and teens are left wondering what all the fuss is about anyway. Aly Pain, What She Said’s expert on the parent/teen dynamic is here today with some tips for getting through this year’s holiday with comfort, and joy.
Anne Brodie has heaps of new entertainment including South Korea's stunning espionage thriller Hunt, the emotionally charged The Eternal Daughter starring the amazing Tilda Swinton playing a dual role as mother and daughter, the wait is finally over Three Pines on Amazon Prime, and the very steamy, super hot Lady Chatterley’s Love on Netflix that is going to give the wedding scene on The Highlander a run for it’s money.
Layoffs are becoming headlines all too frequently right now and it can cause anxiety for those that fear they may be next. Natalie Romero knows how you’re feeling all too well, after being laid off this summer from Shopify. Natalie joins me to share her best tips for getting through a lay off in the best shape possible.
If you’re sober curious or have given up drinking entirely, the holidays can be challenging. Sarah Kate from somegoodcleanfun.com stops by with some tips on everything from what to drink, to preparing mentally, to being the only sober person in the room. This interview is great fun for everyone, whether you drink or not, if only because it offers perspective of the other side, and that’s important when we gather to celebrate.
Finally, where you spend your money this holiday season matters. Every time you spend money, you’re casting a vote for the kind of world you want to live in. Erin Brillon from Totem Design House is here to share ways to ensure your dollar helps instead of hurts, especially when it comes to purchasing indigenous made items.

  • Millennial Finances, Menopause is a Gender Equity Issue, Who's on the PTA, & Louise Penny
Over the last few months we’ve been chatting finances for generations with Meridian Credit Union and this week we’re looking at Millennials who often get a bad rap when it comes to finances. So today we’re leaving behind the ridiculous narrative that says they’re broke because of avocado toast and expensive lattes, and diving into the matter seriously with Maryam Mahdavifar from Meridian Credit Union.
Menopause is something all women will experience at some point in their life, yet at least half of us are completely unprepared when it arrives. The lack of knowledge about menopause leaves millions of women struggling to understand what is happening to their bodies, why they may be feeling the way they do, and whether treatment and support is available. Janet Ko, President of the Menopause Foundation of Canada, a national non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness of the impact of menopause on women and society joins me to discuss.
Anne Brodie is glued to the screen now that awards season is hear but she tears herself away this week to give us an update on what’s new including a look at Poland's EO, a submission for the Best International Feature Oscar, the riveting The Swimmers on Netflix which recreates the real-life struggles of two young Syrian women, and the gloriously eccentric Please Baby Please available on TVOD.
We ignore what happens in our local elections at our peril, particularly when it comes to education. Dr. Prachi Srivastava, who specialises in education and global development joins me to discuss school governance and why we need to be paying attention to who is directly impacting policy at this level.
Louise Penny fans are chomping at the bit for Amazon Prime Video’s release of Three Pine’s starring Alfred Molina. Anne Brodie had the honour of chatting with Penny ahead of the series premiere and shares a bit of it with us today.
Finally, we close out this week’s show with Chelle, a Pop singer-songwriter from Toronto. Chèlle’s unique sound, as well as performance style with her 5 piece band, attracts a wide range of age groups, with people from all walks of life. She joins me to discuss the inspiration behind her newest single, “Think of Me” before we play the song for you.

  • Christmas Mindset, Marrying a Daredevil, ADHD in Teens, and Room For Her
Just hear those sleigh bells ringing, along with the alarm bells in your head as your stress levels move into overload the closer the holidays get. This year though The Sacred Space wants you shift your mindset early so the holidays not only leave you feeling rested but prepared to hit the ground running in 2023. Denise Chand joins me to discuss.
What happens when one risk adverse person meets a daredevil? They get married of course. Danielle Kaplan joins me to share details from her new book I Married a Thrill Seeker which shares the true story of her husband Stephen’s last solo free-spirited ride in the Yukon, that ended horrifically and changed their lives forever in an instant.
Anne Brodie is here with the latest in entertainment with a look at The Menu starring Raph Fiennes which gives a new disturbing twist to the phrase ‘eat the rich’, the true and sad story of two Montreal influencers who chase fame and riches and end up in prison in Australia, and the very sweet Slumberland starring Jason Momoa which is perfect entertainment for the whole family.
Aly Pain is here, fresh on the heels of her own ADHD diagnosis to discuss what ADHD looks like in teens, and how to best support kids who have it.
Women’s mental health has been declining and more and more of us are seeking ways to address it. Thankfully there is help with Room for Her, a FREE service that offers digital cognitive behaviour therapy for one year. This incredible initiative is being supported by Greenshield Canada and Mila Lucio, executive Vice President of Human Resources and Social Impact at Green Shield Canada joins me to share details.
Finally, with the Ford government trying to develop the greenbelt in Ontario, and farmland across the country at risk I thought it would be a good time to re-air an interview I did with Peggy Brekveld this summer. Peggy is President of the Ontario Federation of Agriculture, which represents over 38,000 farm families across Ontario who joined me to discuss their Home Grown campaign. We all need to know what’s at risk when we lose farmland.

  • Poilievre's Use of MGTOW, Unions Stand Firm and Ford Blinks, Brain Health, and The Rooftop Garden
It’s possible you missed the news about Pierre Poilievre’s use of the #MGTOW hashtag on his YouTube channel or perhaps you’re not sure what all the fuss about it is for, so Samanta Krishnapillai from OnCanada Project joins me to discuss why women across Canada, no matter where they sit on the political spectrum, should be concerned about it.
This week, we saw unions across the country unite in a show of solidarity not seen in years, to push back against the Ontario provincial government’s legislation that aimed to take away the bargaining rights of CUPE, but also would have set a precedent for all workers if they got away with it. Laura Walton, President of CUPE OSBCU joins me to discuss how they got the government back to the bargaining table.
Dr. Patricia Wu joins me to chat about the benefits of mushrooms on everything from brain health to immunity support as part of our ongoing series with New Roots Herbal aimed to educate consumers on the benefits of supplements.
Anne Brodie is here and this week we’ve got a bit of a British focus with a look at Season 5 of The Crown on Netflix, The English available on Prime Video, which stars the uber talented Emily Blunt who also produced the series, and a series on etiquette on Netflix called Mind Your Manners which hopefully will help return some civility to our society. Finally and most important to me, is the release of two new Christmas movies coming up this season!
The Rooftop Garden, is a new novel from the host of The Globe and Mail’s The Decibel podcast, Menaka Raman-Wilms, which explores timely themes including climate anxiety and the political radicalization of young men. She joins me to her why for penning her first novel.
Finally, Anne had the honour of sitting in on a group interview with the Cast of Season 5 on the Crown which includes Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth, Jonathon Pryce at Prince Philip, and Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana to name a few of the top talent in this season. We’ll listen in to a bit of that at the end of today’s show.

  • Greedflation, Good Food on a Budget, The Mother of All DeGrassi and Supergirl Syndrome
When Loblaws announced last month that they were freezing prices on their no name brands, the response wasn’t favourable. The public, already at or past the financial breaking point, saw it for what it was, a PR stunt meant to distract from the fact that they are making record profits at the same time that food banks are seeing their higher demand ever. Melissa Silber, aims to educate the Canadian public on large corporate conglomerates in Canada, as well as help entrepreneurs and small business owners and joins me today to discuss greedflation.
From the price of groceries in stores to managing the reality at home, Puneeta Chhitwal-Varma, a food and sustainability author who teaches people how to lead a low-waste, people+planet friendly lifestyle through her website Maple and Marigold is on a mission to help a million people change how they cook and eat, while creating positive habits in their kitchen and at home, and yes, on a budget.
Anne Brodie is in with entertainment and the Oscar contenders keep coming, with Florence Pugh coming in strong in The Wonder available on Netflix this month, and two documentaries about music megastars with My Life as a Rolling Stone which takes a deep dive on each member of this iconic band, and The Return of Tanya Tucker.
Degrassi Fans will want to stick around for this interview. Linda Schuyler is the executive producer and co-creator of over 500 episodes of the internationally recognized, multi-award winning Degrassi television franchise. Her memoir,The Mother of all Degrassi,is out now, and Linda joins me to share the a little bit behind her incredible story.
Lindsay Sealey, author of Made for More is back with a look at the “supergirl syndrome” and how it places undue pressure on GenZ women and girls. Lindsay shares some tips that we can employ to help them, and possibly even help ourselves escape from this trap.
Finally, Sonshine and Broccoli the JUNO-nominated duo from Toronto who know how important it is for children to have music of their own have released a new album. Lisa Sonshine joins me to discuss how the pandemic pushed them to write this album for today’s kids, and then shares the song Born to Be Brave with us, a song kids and adults will love.

  • Theatre Pivot, Undercover Kindness, and Maintaining Your Sanity in an Upside Down World
Theatre took a blow during the pandemic, but who better to tackle the challenges than a creative crew. Laurie Steven is an award-winning director, playwright, dramaturge, and the founding Artistic Director of Odyssey Theatre who joins me to share how her theatre group has embraced the growing genre of audio dramas with The Other Path, a unique collection of modern folklore that tackles today’s big issues on your favourite podcast provider.
We’re all starved for some kindness, so I’m delighted to have my dear friend Erica Ehm join me to discuss The Undercover Kindness Project from The Ontario Caregivers Organization that she has partnered with to help spread comfort and joy to unsuspectiing caregivers who desperately could use our support.
Anne Brodie is here with entertainment and this week she shares what she feels will be an Oscar contender with Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson and Barry Keoghan for their gut-wrenching performances in The Banshees of Inisherin, South Korea’s Official Oscar Selection for International Feature Film Decision to Leave, and Margaret Brown's stunning documentary Descendent, now on Netflix.
Choosing to be compassionate over cynical is hard in a world that keeps throwing us curveballs but its the only way through. Leisse Wilcox joins me to to share her three top tips for helping others while maintaining your sanity in a topsy-turvy world. Added bonus Leisse’s voice is like butter and if nothing else will soothe your soul just listening to her.
We’ve talked a lot about mid-life lately on this show, so today I offer up someone who is walking the talk. Lesley Crewe wrote her first book at 50 and since then has published 14 books. She joins me to share more on this life pivot and details on her new book Nosy Parker.
Finally, writing a book is a lot of work. Now imagine also creating an online world and soundtrack where fans can fully immerse themselves in your fictional world. That’s exactly what my final guest Sienna Tristen has done with her husband Avi Silver in The Heretic’s Guide to Homecoming, a labour of love that is less plot more vibes built over the last decade.

  • The Appalling Rise in Transphobia, Gen Z's Quest for More, Magic Mushrooms and Homeless Concerns
I welcomed my first guest Amanda Jetté Knox onto the show three years ago to discuss their book Love Lives Here. Today they join me to discuss the alarming rise in transphobic hate and why 2022 was the first year they feared for their life doing their job as an advocate for the 2SLGBTQI+ community.
Lindsay Sealey, author of Made for More is back to discuss Gen Z women and girls and this week we take a look at the relentless pursuit of MORE. More money, more cars, more clothes but is that really making us happy? Of course we all know the answer to that so how then can we help our girls find the more that really matters, more love, more fulfillment, more peace.
As always Anne Brodie is in with entertainment and this week we take a look at Shantaram on Apple TV+ starring Charlie Hunnam who takes us on an extreme adventure in Bombay, Plan A on TVOD which is based on the true story of a cell of Jewish underground resistance members, Welcome to Wrexham on FX Disney + starring Canada’s favourite son, Ryan Reynolds, and Big Bad Budget Battle with the Pioneer Woman.
Mushrooms are enjoying a moment in the sun as we learn more and more about their health benefits. As part of our ongoing partnership with New Roots Herbal we take a closer look today with Dr. Colleen Hartwick who breaks down their benefits on everything from brain health to immune support.
Despite increased international attention the number of people falling victim to human trafficking around the world continues to grow and Canada is no exception. Alexandra Stevenson knows this all too well as a victim of sex trafficking. She joins me to share what we need to know to prevent this from happening to more young women and girls.
Finally, homelessness is on the rise across Canda due to a variety of factors but the bottom line is that too many people will be cold, unsheltered, and hungry this winter. Our response needs to be swift. Dr. Karen Shin from St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto joins me to discuss.

  • How Sex Traffickers Groom Victims with Alexandra Stevenson aka The Laughing Survivor
Human Trafficking is often thought of as something that only happens in foreign countries, or to those who are uneducated, perhaps poor. These are dangerous concepts to hold on to. My next guest grew up in suburbia in an idyllic neighbourhood. A straight A student, self-described nerd, a young activist, no one would have thought Alexandra Stevenson would end up the victim of human sex trafficking, especially Alexandra who only came to realize she was trafficked 10 years after her escape from her groomer. It’s a harrowing story with a lot of lessons we all need to sit up and pay attention to. In the podcast Alexandra shares how sex assault as a child led her straight into the arms of a trafficker as a late teen. She also shares the five stages of grooming, something we should all know how to identify, and what it’s like to parent young children with CPTSD. I’m largely silent in this podcast, because the story is simultaneously horrific, uplifting, and educational. Meet Alexandra AKA, The Laughing Survivor.

  • Truth and Reconciliation All Year Long, Starve the Hunger, Managing the Midlife Crisis and More
Truth and Reconciliation Day has passed and Orange shirts have been packed away for another year. This does not mean we can move on for another year. Only 10 of the 94 calls to action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission have been addressed, which means activism needs to be less performative and more constructive. Samanta Krishnapillai from On Canada Project joins me to share what that should look like.
Thanksgiving will not be a happy occasion for over a million Canadians this year, as inflation forces more and more people to seek relief from Canada’s food banks. Food insecurity and hunger is at an all-time high and food banks are stretched to help support soaring demand. Kirstin Beardsley, CEO of Food Banks Canada wants all Canadians to know that food alone will not solve hunger and food insecurity in Canada – and shares how we can all get involved to help our neighbours and communities.
Anne Brodie pops in with enough new entertainment to get you through a long weekend and the anticipated turkey coma. Lena Dunham is back with a new show she wrote and directed on Amazon Prime called Catherine Called Birdy which Anne says is a triumph of innovation and imagination. House of Hammer on Discovery takes a look at the family legacy of violence, abuse, drugs, and murder over generations in one of the world’s wealthiest families. Plus The Lincoln Project on Showtime which takes a look at the the fastest-growing super PAC in America, as they take on the task of “saving democracy” and defeating their own party’s sitting president.
Mid-life can be a crisis for some and a time of release for others, and all of that depends largely on your mindset going into it. Jennifer John from The Sacred Space Coaching pops by with some tips on moving through this time of life with intention and purpose so that you can write the best next chapter of your life.
Who doesn’t want to be a badass? Jennifer Cassetta wants to help you achieve that goal with her new book The Art of Badassery, Unleash Your Mojo with Wisdom of the Dojo and lays out how you can attain black belt status in your life with this easy to follow self-help book that helps you harness the wisdom, tools, and tactics she learned on the dojo mat.
Finally, Vanessa Vakharia who is half of the rock duo Goodnight Sunrise, stops by to discuss their latest single One Pill before we play it for you in its entirety.
