In light of the Ukraine-Russia war, Lindsey and Amber deconstruct society's view of 'resiliency' and discuss how toxic positivity can keep people oppressed. The American Psychological Institute defines resilience as, "the process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats, or significant sources of stress..." We agree -- not all stress is bad -- it's the way you respond that's important. While resiliency is typically seen as a good thing, toxic resilience describes a bounce-back from stress and tension that harms ourselves and/or others by viewing it as the process of simply pushing through and soldiering on. As Harvard Business Review suggests, this can translate into putting up with boring or demoralizing jobs, relationships, and situations for longer than needed. Ultimately, the pressure (or trauma) that we have experienced distorts our normal behavior to the extent that while we may recover at one level, we are also more apt to experience the world differently by minimizing our personal needs.
