Show Notes Episode 422: The Vampire of Sacramento
Part Two of Spooktacular 2023 “Gavin St James, Vampyre Hunter”
This week Host Dave Bledsoe remembered that time when he got drunk in Sacramento and realized Sacramento was a really boring place to get drunk. (Even drunk, Sacramento is really boring) On the show this week we continue Spooktacular 2023 with one of the vilest serial killers in American crime history, Richard Chase, the Vampire of Sacramento.
Along the way Dave takes you on an audio tour of the Big Tomato (That really IS what they call Sacramento) it only takes thirty seconds because there is so little to see. Then we dive right into why Sacramento has SO MANY serial killers. (See the part about how boring it is) After that it is straight into the backstory of Richard Trenton Chase, a regular kid growing up in regular life in the 1950s with regular 1950’s kid hobbies, like torturing and killing small animals. (You want a trigger warning? On a show about a serial killer? You didn't infer that from the topic?) We will meet Richard's family, who were not loving, in fact they had a LOT to do with what Richard became. (Well that and Richard’s peep being on the fritz) We learn how Richard mixed his own smoothies at home with all natural farm fresh ingredients. (Seriously, this is a sick dude and this is a SICK topic!) Then we discover how Richard moved from small furry creatures to hairless hominids in order to replenish his delusion blood problem. (We TRIED to keep the WORST of the detail out, but what we left in fucking horrifying!) Finally, we pin the blame on the real villain responsible for Richard’s crimes and so many other California killers in the 70’s and 80’s (It is exactly who you think it is!)
Our Sponsor this week is the Blood Bank of Sacramento, who need you to know they are not a cafeteria and you are not a real vampire. We open with some people who knew Richard Chase and close with the Middle of Road singing the praises of Sacramento.

Show Notes Episode 422: Say Hello to the Night
WTH Movie Night: The Lost Boys Pt 1 of Spooktacular 2023
This week Host Dave Bledsoe resolves to sleep all day, party all night and never grow old. Only to discover he has grown old and he is sound asleep by 8 PM. (He is SO old!) On the show this week we kick off Spooktacular 2023 “Gavin St James, Vampyre Hunter” with a What the HELL Movie Night, 1987’s The Lost Boys!
Along the way we learn that little Davy got so scared reading Stephen King he made his Mommy buy him a crucifix. (What a pussy!) Then we dive right into how two novice screenwriters wrote the Goonies but with vampires and how it became a MUCH better movie than that. We learn how the guy who made Danny Glover too old for this shit, passed on the movie and gave it to the Director who would make a classic vampire movie for Generation X. (And also snuck in a LOT of gay subtext!) Do we mention Sexy Saxophone Man? (See what we just said about gay subtext.) Finally we ask the hard question: is it scary? (Yes, and no.)
Our Sponsor this week is the Santa Clara Tourism Board who wants you to know the murder rate isn’t THAT bad! We open with the trailer to the movie and close with Tailgunner who would like to introduce you to their friend “The Night”.

Episode 421: Come On In Boy, Have A Cigar
This week Host Dave Bledsoe pops the tube a fine imported Cuban Cigar. (He stole it from the coat pocket of a Wall Street guy next to him at the bar.)Then he slits it open, dumps the tobacco and fills it with some sweet kush he’s been smoking. (Great, he has a NEW bad habit!) On the show this week we head back to the mid 1990’s when it seems every asshole you knew suddenly had a smoldering dog turd sticking out of their lips because they thought it made them look “cool” (It didn’t and it doesn’t)
Along the way we learn that Dave’s Dad has far better taste than his son could ever dream of. (Honestly, he must wonder what happened to his boy!) Then we dive right into the history of tobacco, from the snuff box to the cigarette! (You get cancer and YOU get cancer!) We discover how Christopher Columbus stole the idea of smoking cigars from the native Cuban islanders. (Then he stole their food, their land and eventually them!) We followed along as cigar smoking became the affectation of choice for rich pricks and just pricks that WISHED they were rich! Then we get right into why everyone was suddenly pretending they were smoking these nasty things in 1995 and why just as suddenly, everyone stopped. (Do we talk about the Bill Clinton thing? Come ON! Of course we do!)
Our Sponsor this week is Caca de Perro Cubano, the genuine Havana rolled premium cigar from Fast Eddie’s Hothouse Humidors! We open with George Carlin explaining Freudian theory and close with Corey Heuvel who urges you to smoke them if you got them.

Show Notes Episode 420: I Got Stoned and I Missed It
This week Host Dave Bledsoe decided to give up drinking and take up smoking weed. Only to discover that legal weed dealers will NOT let him run a tab. (Not unlike most neighborhood bars!) On the show this week we experience some kind of hallucination where we think we are talking to a real person instead of shouting angrily as a figment of Dave’s imagination. (Or is it? We’ll never tell!) So we welcome Jerrod Tracht, the co-host of the Hit Podcast The Dowers Boys, on the show to chat with Dave about weed. (Honestly “hit” is a stronger word than we would choose, but Dave made us say it!) Along the way Jerrod gives Dave some advice on how to be a better pot smoker and the two of them share some highly improbable tales of their adventures with the Devil’s Lettuce!
Our Sponsor this week is Sweet Sticky Icky, the weed that takes all the worry out of weed. We open the show with a regretful pot smoker and close with Dr Hook lamenting the impacts of weed on their lives.

Show Notes Episode 419: Find A Stranger In the Alps
This week Network boss Jeremy Balon shows up at the studio to wash Dave’s filthy mouth out with soap! (We guess he finally listened to the podcast.) On the show this week we take a look at the strange history of The Bleep and swear words on television. (It is *bleep*ing more interesting than you think!)
Along the way we learn that Dave is still afraid of his Mom. (He should be, he is a VERY bad son!) Then we dive right into the history of censorship in these United States. (Blame the Puritans, natch!) From there we follow along as technology makes hearing potty mouths more common. We see how early TV broadcasts found ways to keep bad words off the airwaves. (Mostly by hoping no one heard them.) Then we talk about the Bleep and how it became an American Icon. Finally we learn how and why for reasons never adequately explained, we all had to see Dennis Franz’s hairy naked ass on ABC in the late 1990’s. (Blame HBO!)
Our Sponsor this week is Swearing Soap, specially formulated to get dirty mouths clean! We open the show with Carlin’s famous Seven Dirty Words You Can’t Say on Television and close with The P(Bleep)cat Dolls who censor their song for effect.

Show Notes Episode 418: Zay Zomething Different
This week Host Dave Bledsoe thinks it’s funny to order a Zima from a bartender who wasn’t alive when Zima was a thing. (The bartender did not.) On the show this week we head back to the early 90’s when Coors decided they wanted to toss their hat in the “clear craze” and released a drink that tasted like nothing ever before, because it tasted like nothing: Zima! (Are there WAY too many S’s pronounced with Z’s in this show? Unfortunately, yes.)
Along the way we learn that Dave’s Uncle is going to be in REAL trouble if Dave’s Mom finds out he gave him booze when he was eight years old. (Sorry!) Then we dive right into the story of an obscure brewery that just wanted to make a name for itself in the “youth market” (By which we mean underage drinkers). So they created a new “malternative” to beer that no one asked for and no wanted. (Except maybe David Letterman.) We learn how it tasted (it didn’t) and who it was marketed towards. (Dudes, and they didn’t like it) We find out that David Letterman is really the guy who killed Zima. (Well, that and the dude who created it in the first place.) Finally we chart the longer and much slower than you remember decline of Zima and the rise of its successors.
Our Sponsor this week is Malt Liquor, it is any booze you want it to be. We open with two guys who just wanted a beer and close with Zorahna who has a little surprise for us in their trunk.

Show Notes Episode 417: Segassem Lanimilbus Niatnoc Yam
This week Host Dave Bledsoe attempts to get a free drink by briefly holding up a 3x5 Index Card with the words “NO PAY” on it to the bartender hoping to subliminally message him. (The bartender made him choose between eating the card or getting thrown out. He ate it.) On the show this week we head back to 1990 when Judas Priest was sued because someone thought they used subliminal messages to kill their fans. (They weren’t and they didn’t)
Along the way we discover that Dave was NOT very metal as a teenager, (He was downright cherubic! Which is NOT Metal!) Then we dive right into the dark and sad story of two teenagers who did a terrible and tragic thing and the greedy lawyers who tried to make a buck on it. (Trigger warning: Capitalism) We meet the family who very much want you to believe that Judas Priest was responsible for the terrible and tragic thing and NOT the terrible and tragic lives the kids led, largely due to the parents. Then we follow the twisted logic as a small town lawyer goes after a band and record label on the legal pretext that somehow it makes good business sense for either of them to want fewer customers rather than more. (And are willing to kill to make that happen) Finally, we hear from any number of “experts” who listened to a Judas Priest album and just heard whatever the fuck they wanted to hear. (But somehow missed Rob Halford asking for a peppermint. GIVE ROB HIS PEPPERMINT!)
Our Sponsor this week is Sully’s Subliminals, who want you to know it isn’t ILLEGAL to use subliminal advertising! We open the show with Bill Hicks and close with Judas Priest doing the least evil song a metal band ever wrote.

Show Notes Episode 416: Milli Vanilli Were Neither A Milli Nor A Vanilli
This week Host Dave Bledsoe INSISTS the person who ran up this bar tab was an imposter and he is NOT responsible for paying them! (This did not work.) On the show this week we talk about the scandal that officially ended the 1980’s, even though it happened in 1990: The Milli Vanilli lip sync affair! (Turns out the real bad guy was capitalism!)
Along the way we learn that some told Dave he could sing! (They were wrong, so very, very, wrong!) Then we meet our bad guy Frank Farian and a German record producer with a penchant for exploiting black musicians. (Kind of a cliche in the recording industry.) We follow Frank as he tries to cash in on this whole “rap thing” he’s been hearing about by putting together a band with the right look and the right sound to make a hit! (Sadly, the look and the sound were different people.) Then we watch the rise of Milli Vanilli from the West German Club Scene to taking best new artist at the Grammys only to fall just as fast as the rose when the CD skipped at an MTV Concert. (With all the money they were making you would think they could afford a new CD for every show!) Finally, we see what happens when capitalism meets reality. (The rich get richer, the poors die of drug overdose.)
Our Sponsor this week is Fast Eddie’s Talent Management, who want you to know it isn’t fraud unless we get caught. We open with news coverage of Rob and Fab’s downfall and close with Frog Leap Studios professing their love for you girl!
