Trending today: Utah Valley University and the WAC conference fight over a couple million dollars as the school tries to leave the conference – which doesn’t impress Aaron at all. (Also: Aaron and Michael Koh do not understand basic economics.)

Trending today: filling in for Victor, Michael Koh celebrates our successful efforts to save the American buffalo from extinction. (Which leads to an interesting question: what actually is the most beloved American animal? The bald eagle is the obvious answer, but is it correct?)

Trending today: a push to breed plants that deliberately draw metals from the earth, to make them easier to extract. (The metals, that is.) Unfortunately that won’t be great for the plants long-term, though – shades of Douglas Adams, Aaron says. (Or is it Terry Pratchett? No, it was Adams the whole time.)

Trending today is an increasingly popular scam (or not a scam?) among Russian soldiers who are being forced to the Ukrainian front: sham weddings with female friends, so they can collect the government death-benefit payout if the soldiers die. Go for it, Aaron says: the Russian government is taking advantage of you for their own gain, so turnabout is only fair play. (Though the Russian mafia’s getting involved, which makes it a little sketchier.)

Trending today: a perma-wave in a Munich, Germany canal that’s been popular with surfers for 50 years – has suddenly disappeared. Why? Was it intentional? Are Munich officials trying to thwart it because the surfing was illicit, or do they want to bring it back because of the financial benefits from such a popular pastime? Inquiring minds want to know.

Trending today: a new study of early-medieval Britain that finds that – contrary to popular belief – British society didn’t collapse or fall into serious decline after the Romans left. (Though Aaron’s not convinced: the study focused specifically on mining output, but since when is that the key indicator of societal success?)

About 4.5 trillion cigarette filters get discarded every year, often in the form of litter – and they’re plastic, so they’re not going anywhere. (Also, Aaron breaks out his RFK impression.)
