What's Your Mount Rushmore?

Mount Rushmore of Disturbing Songs

Happy Halloween! Every year around this time we like to choose an appropriate topic for the season. And we always bring in a special guest: Susan Hanson. Susan is Jon's wife and a big horror movie fan. She has joined us twice before, recording episodes about Slasher Movies and Disturbing Movies. This year she wanted to do something music related, so she came up with the topic of Disturbing Songs.

What makes a song disturbing? It could be the music. It could be the lyrics. It could just be the way it all comes together. Sometimes the songs are intended to be shocking, but that is not always the case. In fact you'll hear picks in this episode from EACH of us that will completely surprise you! We definitely surprised each other.

As usual we have a lot of fun, even if the topic is a little creepy! What songs make you a bit uncomfortable?

NOTE: One of us needed a week off for traveling, so we decided to brush off one of our all-time favorite episodes. Mount Rushmore of Metallica Songs 🤘 This is a fun one, and good timing with Metallica now in the middle of their residency at The Sphere in Las Vegas. Enjoy!

Metallica is one of the biggest rock bands on the planet, and we have been fans of them since we were teenagers. As usual it was not easy narrowing on four picks for this list - especially looking back at more than 40 years of amazing music.

We knew it would be a tough one so we brought in a true heavy hitter to help us with this episode. The one and only long-haired, Harley-riding, tattoed Dirtbag Dujour... Remy Maxwell. Those are HIS words by the way! Remy is a fixture in Twin Cities radio, currently as the voice of Jack-FM. But he also has a long history in rock radio, has worked as a recording engineer and is a lifelong Metallica fan. His first time seeing them live in concert goes back to 1986!

Between the three of us we did match on a few songs. We picked some of the most popular tunes, but also dug deep for some album tracks. Any fan of Metallica will love this episode. Remy even shares a couple Metallica stories that are very unique to him.

Regular listeners know that we both watch a lot of TV. And many of the TV shows we have watched and loved over the years can get a wee bit violent. And sadly, that means popular characters will meet their demise. Sometimes in shocking ways! And it one case (as you'll hear in the episode) in a pretty funny way.

For this episode we wanted to be careful because we know it will involve spoilers. You may not have seen all the shows we discuss. So to help you avoid spoilers, as we go into each pick we tell you the TV show first before mentioning the character name. If it's a show you haven't seen, and intend to watch, this gives you a chance to skip ahead a bit.

Most of the TV Deaths we discuss are from popular shows and most people have probably seen at least some of them. Don't let the somber topic discourage you, we approach our lists in our typical entertaining way!

We grew up watching TV and as Gen-Xers we also grew up in a time when Food Mascots ruled the airwaves. Especially for foods aimed at kids, like breakfast cereals, snacks, fast food and beverages. And watching those Saturday morning cartoons we would see all of them.

But even foods NOT aimed at kids often had mascots, like beers and vegetables. Bottom line... we had a lot of options to choose from! We both went the nostalgic route as you may expect and chose a mix of animals, people and weird little creatures that defy logic!

We love music and we love comedy. And there is a place where those two loves come together... Parody Songs! By Parody Songs we really are referring to any comedy song. Something recorded with the intention of making us laugh.

For this episode we brought in one of Jon's childhood buddies, Mike Geldert. Jon has known Mike since they were about 4 years old, and lived one block apart. He's is one of the biggest fans of Weird Al we know, so we thought he'd be the perfect guest.

But what we didn't know was that his picks were going to surprise us. How? Listen to find out!

We spun the wheel of names once again! This week we landed on the name Jennifer. We each put together our Mount Rushmore lists of People Named Jennifer. Jens & Jennys are in the mix too!

We've done this a few times before, covering our favorite people named Steve, Rick and Gary. So it was about time the wheel stopped on a female name. We chose some of the biggest celebrities in the world for our lists, and one of us shakes things up with a fictional Jennifer. Who would be on YOUR Mount Rushmore?

We are re-releasing an old episode this week that you may have missed. It's one of our favorites. If you have never listened to this one, you're in for a treat!

People are generally fascinated with unsolved mysteries. Look at all the TV shows, documentaries, books and movies that are made each year covering mysterious topics. We are no exception, some of the mysteries we talk about in this episode have been puzzling us since we were kids.

Our Mount Rushmore picks include some of the oldest mysteries known to man, dating back as much as 4,500 years. But we also have a few much more recent mysteries, having taken place in the 1970s. Hopefully you are not expecting us to solve any of these enigmas. We do however, provide some stupid thoughts, uninformed speculation and random nonsense. Enjoy!

Football is BACK! We love Football and love this time of year. It's the perfect time to talk about our Mount Rushmore of Football Movies!

We did an episode awhile back covering our favorite Baseball Movies. When the time came to make our list of football films we realized there are not as many to choose from, which is strange considering football has become America's favorite sport. But we each came up with a great list, and only ended up matching on one. What gridiron classics make your Mount Rushmore?

Whether it's with married couples, dating couples or teenagers trying to navigate their first crushes, the romantic element of sitcoms goes all the way back to the beginning of television. With as much TV as we have watched, it was a perfect topic for a podcast episode!

Our guest this week, Jennifer Cariveau is a friend of Mark's going back to their childhood growing up in the same neighborhood of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. Not only did Jennifer make a great guest, but she is actually the one who suggested the topic to us!

There are some obvious picks on our lists and some not so obvious. In fact Jon takes a couple of his picks in a totally different direction!

Some may say the 1990s were the last great decade for rock music. It definitely was one of the last eras where rock songs were crossing over and making an impact on the pop charts.

Being a couple of Gen-X dudes we have a great appreciation for rock bands from the 1990s and we loved listing our favorites in this episode.

One rule we made for ourselves: The bands we picked had to have had their breakthrough IN the 1990s. Some were formed in the 80s but didn't have success until the 90's and most of them had success well into the 2000s. But the 90's are where they had their first success.
