Where the Long Tail Ends episodes

  • Still Watching the Skies: Episode 14 "Time After Time"
Nat, Cody, and Robert take a trip back to 1893 and 1979 with Nicholas Meyer'sTIME AFTER TIME. But before we get into that, we have a discussion on the Toronto International Film Festival (which you can read more about at Intercut.net) and the Milwaukee Film Festival and we dive into our mailbag which inevitably results in us finding our way into the gutter. Then it's on to the main feature where we talk about time travel, the progressiveness of Mary Steenburgen's character, ripper killings, Malcolm McDowell being charming, and how to order at McDonald's.

  • Still Watching the Skies: Episode 13 "Invasion of the Body Snatchers"
Robert, Nat, and Cody are pleased to welcome special guest Jim Laczkowski to the show as we discuss one of science fiction's most seminal and mutable franchises, Jack Finney's Invasion of the Body Snatchers. But before we get into that, we dive into our mailbag and discuss what classics we regard as too hashed over for us to add anything of substance to the discussion and we create a virtual pantheon of films for our podcast. If you want to know if your favorite is so enshrined, you'll have to listen to hear the list and our reasoning for it. Or, if you want to get to the main course of the episode, go to the 47 minute mark. Cody disappears at this point, being replaced by Jim rather than a pod person, and we begin our discussion with 1956's INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS where we talk about Don Siegel, Kevin McCarthy, Communism and McCarthyism allegories, and long flights of stairs. We then turn our attention to 1978's remake of INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS where we discuss Philip Kaufman, Donald Sutherland, Veronica Cartwright, and just what we think the film is trying to say about 1970s San Francisco.  Finally, we end our discussion at 1993's BODY SNATCHERS where we chew over Abel Ferrara, Meg Tilly, Roger Ebert's review of the film, and whether or not we should be focusing on social allegory with this version of the story.
