    Publisher's Summary:
Which is exactly why outsider Joseph Antonelli leaves the comfort of his Portland, Oregon, practice and heads for "The City" to take on Jamaal's defense. Working for Antonelli are two advantages: his client is a clean-cut pre-med honor student at Berkeley; and the dead senator's many enemies don't mourn - they even welcome - his passing. Working against him is one glaring, seemingly overpowering fact: the inability of the defendant to explain why he was caught with the murder weapon right next to his hand as he lay unconscious, shot in the back as he fled from the scene of the crime.
Mounting his defense, Antonelli will unravel a frightening chain of espionage, betrayal, and violent assassination that spirals far beyond the brute simplicities of a common street crime. Determined to win his case and prevail in an unforgiving world, he will face the most personal, most dangerous peril of all, the hazard of becoming a man exactly like Senator Jeremy Fullerton himself, one who knows everyone's secrets and tells everyone lies.
    Critic Reviews:
"D.W. Buffa excels at describing the courtroom tactics of his smart, thoughtful protagonist...and he's a deft hand with pacing, too. Fans of Grisham and Turow who haven't yet made Buffa's acquaintance are in for a very satisfying read." (Amazon.com)

Excellent book and could not figure and guess the ending
Excellent book and could not figure and guess the ending. Author keep you in suspense and a good deal of what takes place in the court room . This book from d the judges stand point is very partial to the defense attorney because of his dislike of the prosecutor on personal basis. Marissa is a stabilizing and comforting's factor for the defense attorney. The defendant is not much of the story.
Pales in comparison to the other Antonelli books
This 4th book in the Antonelli series was quite a disappointment. The first 3 books were well written with tight, interesting plots and subplots. Half way through this one, I had to force myself to continue. The characters were not well fleshed out, one of the "twists" in the story was very obvious from the beginning and overall it was a confusing and muddled tale. Near the end of the book, I found myself looking longingly at the stack of other books that I have available to read and I wound up scanning the last third of The Legacy just to finish it off. I guess all authors have a clunker now and then. I hope this was Mr. Buffa's misfire and that future books in this series will be as entertaining as the first 3 were.

    wow what a book!!!!!
If your ready for a thriller wait till you get a load of this one. this is the second Harlan Coben book I've heard, and it's no disappointment. When you think you know it all trust me you know nothing at all. In Gone for good as well as tell no one, its all in the last 2minutes of the book. There both great a must have!!!!
    You can't stop listening
Harlan Coben is an exceptional writer. Gone for Good is truly his best work. A real page turner when I read it and just as compelling listening to the story. The narration adds a whole new dimension.
    Too many characters
Characters enter the story and are linked with little notice. Good story but gets confusing at times
    Watch out
This story is so-o-o predictable. And the elements of the situation are so-o-o hard to believe. Not nearly as good as the author's "Tell No One" which I thought was great.
    Pretty good read
I found the villians to be a bit overdone. The plot twists were OK, but I found myself thinking at times that it was all too overboard. In all, though, it was entertaining.

dare you to put it down
This is a sensitive and believable treatment of something that can easily happen all too often in this country today when parents keep loaded guns in the house--for any reason--and children manage to get access to them. The author has portrayed the characters of both sexes realistically and the book is likely to make a reader think about all of the issues surrounding gun control, crime, protection from criminals, etc. She also shows the destruction and resurrection of characters through their various reactions to tragedy. I found it endlessly interesting and left with a hopeful ending.
A very sad story tht will stay with you for a long time.
I read this book when it first came out in 2000 and just re-read it this weekend. It is a sad story of profound loss and love that is usually unconditional, but may not be in this situation. I found the last 2 chapters particularly heart-breaking and gut-wrenching. The writing is adequate, but not phenomenal, but the story will stay with you for a long time.
It's not what I thought it would be
When I first picked this book up, I thought it was just another easy read ~~ something quick and brainless to pass the time. I was not expecting good writing or a good story line ... and this book threw me for a change. I guess I shouldn't judge a book by its cover like I did with this one.
However, despite its good writing and plot, the story itself is brutal, hard, self-searching for truth and deals with a tough issue ... accidental death by shooting. Teddy accidentally shoots his baby sister, Trina, and his whole life turns upside down as well as his mom and stepdad's. And Swick deals with the issue of grieving, bitterness, anger, a mother's struggle to continue to love her son ... all in this compact book. She deals with the death from all angles and does a good job. You relate to everyone of the characters and you see something that makes the evening news with a closer perspective than you would normally.
I enjoyed this book much to my surprise, considering the grisly theme. It also isn't just a cheap thriller either. It's a book I would pass on for friends to read. It's much better than I thought it would be and I recommend it for anyone to read.
    An Unforgetful Book
I read this book quiet a few years ago, before I had children and I remember being haunted- in a good way, when a book really touches you- ever since. Funny that once I had kids, this book comes back to mind every so often bc of the true fragility of life and how losing a child- especially a young one- due to an unspeakable accident, can affect you life.

But Annie, his wife, has become tired of her workaholic husbands absences, and the soccer-mom lifestyle has worn thin. She begins a passionate love affair with bad-boy, fading celebrity painter Simon Haasan affair that quickly goes awry when Simons wife, Lydia, who is also the model upon whom he built his career, discovers the truth.
Abortion, local evangelism, marital disenchantment, and the rifts of social class: Brundage takes on the fault lines of our era with a deft hand.
    Critic Reviews:
"The prologue to this compelling novel consists of the murder confession of an obviously unhinged person. So, from the first sentence, readers are hooked--and stay hooked till the end.... Third-person narration, rotating point of view, and skillful use of flashback gradually construct the anatomy of a catastrophe and provide suspense, momentum, and believable characters." (Booklist)

Its a Novel, Not a Mystery
Its not gripping in any way, though the narration is good. It reminds one of the movie Unfaithful, a bored wife who is unfulfilled with her perfect life goes to far and there are horrible twists and turns. Its just ok. I wouldn't buy it again.
can't believe it finished so quick.
i read it along with the audible. love it. can't wait to read another book/ audible
    Adulterous wife made a victim
Is there anything you would change about this book?
Yes. I would change the plot so that the adulterous wife and her lover were not made to be seen as the victims of the story.
What was most disappointing about Elizabeth Brundages story?
The wife was never held accountable for her actions. Granted, she was in an unhappy marriage, but so was the woman whose husband she cheated with. The supporting characters were not flushed out enough and I think this is why I was not able to sympathize with the wife of the doctor. I did not totally view the villain (the artist's wife) as such because although her husband was aware of her mental issues, his transgressions were blatantly disrespectful. While I do not condone his wife's demented actions, I sympathized more with her than I did the doctor's wife who essentially just wanted a play boy and gave no thought whatsoever to the impact her actions had on the artist's wife. Even when it became apparent her mental state was escalating out of control. Lastly, I was not able to understand the attraction between the doctor's wife and the artist. The artist's was plain; he just wanted sex and comfort outside his marriage, yet he wouldn't leave his wife because she needed him....blah blah blah. But I couldn't grasp what about him drew the doctor's wife. He came off as a bad boy who was either drunk or hung over, and usually unkempt. What about that is attractive?
What about Ellen Archers performance did you like?
    I enjoyed the narrator's performance.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
    No, I would not.

    Publisher's Summary:
The time is 1964. The place is the Cabinet Room of the White House. An unexpected accident and the law of succession have just made Douglass Dilman the first black President of the United States.
This is the theme of what was surely one of the most provocative novels of the 1960s. It takes the reader into the storm center of the presidency, where Dilman, until now an almost unknown senator, must bear the weight of three burdens: his office, his race, and his private life.
From beginning to end, The Man is a novel of swift and tremendous drama, as President Dilman attempts to uphold his oath in the face of international crises, domestic dissension, violence, scandal, and ferocious hostility. Push comes to shove in a breathtaking climax, played out in the full glare of publicity, when the Senate of the United States meets for the first time in one hundred years to impeach the President.

Returned, could not listen to it
Would you try another book from Irving Wallace and/or Rhett S. Price?
The narration is really poor. The narrator tries to do voices, but all his voices either sound the same or are laughable. In a book about an African-American president, I thought all the voices sounded African-American and thus could not tell them apart. And the women's voices were particularly bad- like men in a very bad cross-dressing skit. More annoying was the narrator's tendency to put the emphasis on phrases like "he said" in an odd place and thus make this filler phrases jar the listener every time. Then we have the problem that Wallace's book has not aged well at all. It's that 1960's thing where a white man is altogether too self- conscious and preachy in his writing. Also, even for the time the women characters were all weak, man-crazy or man-desperate, and entirely too dumb and tentative to be working in the white house or entertaining senators. The plot showed signs of being laughable even given the historical period in which the book was set. I tried to listen to it, but had to return it after an honest effort.
What didnt you like about Rhett S. Prices performance?
    See above
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
for it's time the book was a groundbreaking rumination on having a black president. I remembered it fondly which is why I tried it now.
    I was Intriged
I would listen to this one again. I'm sorry it has ended. I was amazed at the depth of understanding the author had for the main charactor. It made for a very powerful book as I stood with him (in his shoes as it were).
I wonder how the author got close enough to see so clearly into those painful places?.
It looked at race and the effects of race at a very gut level. The book allowed me to be entertained while it challanged me to think. That's what made it so engaging for me. 32 hours was not enough. I wish it had a sequel. If you like law, White House goings on, and solid human struggle to grow and find acceptance, read it
    Lengthy but quite good
Very good book. Lots of history woven in. The voice for Sen. Miller is very annoying, but Sen Miller was very annoying. The characters came to life with their struggles to do what was right vs what was convenient or acceptable. There were also strong passages detailing the various plights of blacks. Although some of the issues don't still exist, eerily/sadly/frustratingly some of the issues still plague or nation.

    Best work.
His best book by far. Great mystery and well written characters. Setting is well written.
    Pass this one by ...
The basic plot line seemed promising ... I enjoy near future sci fi and fantasy ... but the writing on this particular novel was badly in need of a good editor - the descriptions were way too wordy and predictable. At first I thought perhaps the writing just seemed horrible because the narration was so bad. But I'm afraid I couldn't tough it out beyond the first couple of chapters.
I've read that Carr's other books are good - after this one, however, I don't think I want to risk another one.

    Hard to listen to
This is an excellent story, and quite an interesting view into life in an earlier time in Ireland. Unfortunately, the author's narration makes the experience almost unbearable, with her long pauses and constant gulping breaths. It is really a shame. I really wished she had let someone else do the reading as I am having a hard time enjoying her wonderful writing and find myself only able to listen to a little at a time, before I can't stand it anymore. Do yourself a favor and get a hard copy of this fascinating glimpse into a different time and place.
    Spectacular Writing and Narrating
I was almost swayed by negative reviews of Edna O'Brien's narration. Wow, am I glad I downloaded it anyway. O'Brien is a spectacular writer whose sensitivity to small details and physical gestures rivals that of Proust. She brings the world of her youth to life in such vivid complexity and psychological honesty, I was completely transported.
As for the reading, it's true she is not a professional narrator and you can hear her taking breaths and pausing at odd moments. HOWEVER, she has a gorgeous voice that is so full of feeling--plus the lovely accent, and a hushed, expectant tone--that I was captivated and hanging on every sentence.
One of the best listens of the year for me. I was driving for much of this and at one point was so moved I had to pull over!
Where have all the romantics gone?
Where does The Country Girls rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
    Right at the top.
What other book might you compare The Country Girls to and why?
Pursuit of Love and Love in a Cold Climate. Terribly Mitford-esque..
What about Edna O'Briens performance did you like?
Sound of her voice, incredible diction. marvelous irony.
If you could take any character from The Country Girls out to dinner, who would it be and why?
Mr. Gentleman. You have to ask why?
    Any additional comments?
Where are the negative reviews coming from? Really ladies and gentlemen, have we forgotten the romance of courtship and are we too old to remember how hard our hearts ached when we first fell in love? Edna O'Brien has not forgotten, I am hard pressed to find more than a handful of writers who could write about this experience with as much beauty and haunting charm as she evokes This is the first audiobook that has pressed a review from me. Well, I'd put Jeremy Irons reading of Lolita as my all time no. 1, but it's pretty damn hard to knock Nabokov off the top..
    delightful and compelling
A humorous, mesmerizing and well-observed story of the difficulties and excitements of a young girl growing up poor in Ireland. Charmingly and movingly read by the author. I was hooked from the beginning and listened to many passages twice to enjoy them again.
    Marvelous.
Marvelous reading, old world tone, and sultry, captivating description.

    Publisher's Summary:
From New York Times best-selling author Jill Shalvis....
Sometimes you can go home again....
After an overseas mission goes wrong, Army Special Forces officer Jacob Kincaid knows where he must go to make things right: back home to the tiny town of Cedar Ridge, Colorado. All he needs to scrub away his painful past is fresh mountain air, a lakeside cabin, and quiet solitude. But what he discovers is a gorgeous woman living on a boat at his dock.
Sophie Marren has nowhere else to go. She's broke, intermittently seasick, and fighting a serious attraction to the brooding, dishy, I'm-too-sexy-for-myself guy who's now claiming her dock. Something about Jacob's dark intensity makes her want to tease - and tempt - him beyond measure. Neither one wants to give any ground...until they realize the only true home they have is with each other.
    Critic Reviews:

"Fall in love with Jill Shalvis! She's my go-to read for humor and heart." (Susan Mallery, New York Times best-selling author)

    "She Had Snark"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
yes, as this brother is sexy, macho with a low grade sense of humor! Our heroine has grit!
You don't have to read this series in order as the brothers stories are linked nicely.
This is my favorite brother and heroine in the series.
(Penny is very likable in all the stories)
Who was your favorite character and why?
Sophie, has self deprecating humor this author writes so well. Jacob, yum!
What about Karen Whites performance did you like?
I am a big fan of Ms White's performances. See Julie James series, I own all of them, and this author's animal series, again I own all of them. If you only try one, see my reviews on each one to choose.
If you could rename Nobody But You, what would you call it?
Not sure why this book needs to be renamed, I liked it just fine.
    Any additional comments?
note: use the new 1.25x speed to get the fast pace humor the author intended.
    Loved it!
Great ending to an excellent trilogy. The storyline is amazing with great humor. Love the characters. Absolutely recommend and will definitely reread.
    No clothes needed
Would you try another book from Jill Shalvis and/or Karen White?
There was a 'bit' of story line that held the sex scenes together. Have enjoyed other Jill Shelvis books but not this one. Didn't even finish it...got tired of stopping what I was doing to fast forward through the sex scene.
Would you ever listen to anything by Jill Shalvis again?
    Not intentionally
    disappointed
I waited for months for this book to come out and was disappointed completely. The story line was weak. The reader make all females sound like brainless bimbos. Without a good plot may as well called in audio porn.
