Now the electrifying global adventure continues in this long anticipated sequel, The Fire
Colorado, 2003: Alexandra Solarin is summoned home to her family's ancestral Rocky Mountain hideaway for her mother's birthday. Thirty years ago, her parents, Cat Velis and Alexander Solarin, believed that they had scattered the pieces of the Montglane Service around the world, burying with them the secrets of the power that comes with possessing it. But Alexandra arrives to find that her mother is missing and that a series of strategically placed clues, followed swiftly by the unexpected arrival of a mysterious assortment of houseguests, indicates that something sinister is afoot.
When she inadvertently discovers from her aunt, the chess grandmaster Lily Rad, that the most powerful piece of Charlemagne's service has suddenly resurfaced and the Game has begun again, Alexandra is swept into a journey that takes her from Colorado to the Russian wilderness and at last into the heart of her own hometown: Washington, D.C.
Albania, 1822: 30 years after the French Revolution, when the chess service was unearthed, all of Europe hovers on the brink of the War of Greek Independence. Ali Pasha, the most powerful ruler in the Ottoman Empire, has angered the sultan and is about to be attacked by Turkish forces. Now he sends the only person he can rely upon, his young daughter Haidee, on a dangerous mission to smuggle a valuable relic out of Albania, through the mountains and over the sea, to the hands of the one man who might be able to save it.

    Under rated by most reviewers
The Eight was a fantastic read and it must have been tough to create the logical completion of the story but Katherine Neville did it skillfully. If you intend to read this you must read The Eight first as much of the material in The Fire is best understood after reading The Eight. I thought Susan Denaker did a good job of reading the book, maybe some of her accents weren't perfect but you can tell who's speaking and still keep your mind on your driving. Audible needs to fix part 3 as one chapter is repeated back to back.
    A Terrible Disappointment
My wife and I also had read Neville's novel "The Eight" and were looking forward to her latest work. What a disappointment.
The previous reviewer is spot on. The story is confusing with a lot of loose ends never tied up. For a mystery/thriller, the literary technique is rather amateurish, inventing solutions to some problems which the reader could not possibly have guessed or deduced.
A great deal of time is spent developing the historical framework, but it is hardly significant as presented and could have been done much better.
    Don't waste you time...
    Not bad, but...
A good director can salvage a weak script and a good narrator can do the same for a marginal book. This is a mystery/thriller, but it is read as though it's a bedtime story being read to children! I found it so annoying that it detracted from the story.

Paretsky but not as you know her
I got this, assuming that this was the latest in the series of Chicago based crime novels. But instead got one of the best pieces of American writing I have read. In fact I will listen again very soon. Set in a farming community this is a modern story which tells the intertwined tales of farmers and their families. Gently the stories unravel leaving a stark contrast between the gentle Grellier family and some of their violent and bigoted neighbours. Mixing humour and tragedy in setting far away from cities Paretsky has demonstrated that she is a writer of much wider ability. While I love her other work, I do hope that we will hear more from Kansas. A long book, beautifully read, and I was so sorry when it came to the end.
    Totally engrossing!
Where does Bleeding Kansas rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
It ranks as one of the best.
    Any additional comments?
I had only read a couple Sarah Paretsky's lady detective novels prior to listening to Bleeding Kansas and I wasn't sure what I was going to get when I downloaded it. I was bowled over by the story line, the characters, the plot and the intelligence of the whole. Hoping she's written more like this.
    Disapointing
The ONLY audiobook I've ever skipped to the end to put myself out of my misery.
I was hoping for the wit of VI Warshawski and got stereotypes instead.

    Publisher's Summary:
So begins The Almost Moon, Alice Sebold's astonishing, brilliant, and daring new novel. A woman steps over the line into the unthinkable in this unforgettable work by the author of The Lovely Bones and Lucky.
For years Helen Knightly has given her life to others - to her haunted mother, to her enigmatic father, to her husband and grown children. When she finally crosses a terrible boundary, her life comes rushing in at her in a way she never could have imagined.
Unfolding over the next 24 hours, this searing, fast-paced audiobook explores the complex ties between mothers and daughters, wives and lovers, the meaning of devotion, and the line between love and hate. It is a challenging, moving, gripping story, written with the fluidity and strength of voice that only Alice Sebold has.

    Life isn't nice and tidy
I waited a couple of weeks after finishing this to write a review so I could get some perspective. This is a disturbing story, yes, but its so real. Alice Sebold has the ability to write about real human feelings and thoughts in a way that gets into my head and I feel like I am in the story. This story isn't told, it's shown and experienced. I was engrossed from beginning to end. I could relate with the main character completely. I doubt I will ever forget this book. The storyline is not "normal" and the end is not all wrapped up nice and tidy. That's the point. Life isn't tidy. Messes happen. I think some people will be threatened by the main character's ability to do what she does. It isn't for those who desperately try to deny their humanity.
    Brilliant!
Once again, Alice Sebold walks on the wild side, tackling the margins of conventional life and traditional storytelling. She continually pushes the imagination into the unthinkable and forces the reader to suspend disbelief and think outside the borders of quotidian reality.
A truly astonishing read. One I couldn't put down.
    Brilliant!
This is an amazing book. I did not expect to like it after the first few minutes, but Sebold draws you in and within a half-hour I was spellbound. She writes in clear, bold, exquisitely detailed prose about taboo and unsavory events and makes them completely understandable and forgivable. I loved this book and will read everything else this remarkable woman has written.
    I loved it!
I loved this book. As one reviewer notes, it is not a happy story. However, it is a real story about real people. The author goes back and forth between what is happening now, and memories of what happened at an earlier time. Through these memories, we come to understand the characters, although I did not necessarily like all of them. I highly recommend this book. Well narrated. I couldn't put it down!
    Mother's day - sort of.
Having read Alice Sebolds first two book a memoir Lucky about her own rape and Lovely Bones her first novel. Both are strong powerful works. The Almost Mood is no less powerful and disturbing. Her lead is outstanding and the rest of the book haunting and seeking to understand what she had done and why. This is no books for the faint of heart or those who must judge others. This is an interior book with more revelation per chapter and you will ever expect. Alice - please keep writing!.

In the masterful hands of international bestseller Raymond Khoury, The Sanctuary delivers the same rapid-fire suspense and provocative scholarship that made The Last Templar a coast-to-coast blockbuster.
    Members Reviews:
    Kept my interest!
While I enjoyed the author's last work, The Last Templar, I wasn't wild about it. The Sanctuary though, was one of those books that I just couldn't put down! Lots of action--all believable, and lots of interesting historical facts sprinkled throughout. My only complaint was the extremely poor editing job done throughout the reading. Many times there were noises indicating where the reading had been edited. In a few places a phrase was repeated twice--the original take was not fully removed in the editing. Indeed, in one place, the recording jumped to the end of the book every time I I tried to play it from that point. I had to skip over a few minutes of recording in order to continue with the story. In all of the hundreds of Audible recordings I've listened to over the years, this is the ONLY one where I've encountered a bad editing job.
    Just Okay
The story starts off promising, but soon you realize this is no more than the equivalent of an action movie that has lots of action and not much depth as a story. Very disappointed.
    Pass on this one
This one is just overwritten. The plot is one fairly predictable narrow escape after another with too much filler in between. And the filler itself is overwritten. The result is just a very long listen.
    Disappointed
I have to admit I was expecting a little more, and in the beginning this book seemed very promising. But by the middle I couldn't wait for the book to end. The biggest problem was technical, the audio recording was poorly done... the edits were rough and I found that certain paragraphs would repeat themselves, or there would be "pops" and abrupt changes. I'm sure I would have enjoyed it more if these technical problems weren't present. I have over 2-3 years (2 per month) titles from Audible, and this is the only one I've ever been disappointed with.
    Bad editing, okay story.
The truly awful editing really makes this novel hard to listen to. There are no less than 2 locations were the reader tells the editor/producer to take it from a previously read point in an effort to read it differently.

Sophia passes his test, and soon she is tying canvas sacking to her legs so that she can kneel on the hard ground in the trench. Obermann is very good in the art of archaeology - perhaps too good. Obsessive and intuitive, he is a romantic visionary.

"Provoking, unsettling, ingenious - and a delight." (Guardian)

    Members Reviews:
    Great read.
I'm a fan forever. Great read.
An interesting take on the real Troy discoverer
A most interesting approach. A definite villian, an interesting heroine, and a surprising tale of what "might" have happened on the excavation of Troy.
    Dubious Doings at Dig
I very much enjoyed Peter Ackroyd's short novel The Fall of Troy. A reader's enjoyment will be enhanced by knowledge of the real-life character of Heinrich Schliemann who serves as the springboard for the fictional archaeologist Obermann in the book. I first read of Schliemann in Irving Stone's biographical novel The Greek Treasure. While Irving Stone's book was a solid biographical novel, Ackroyd's book is at turns comic, mythic, suspenseful and gothic as various characters unearth a multilayered city at Hisarlik, Turkey.
Obermann is a great character and I never knew quite how to respond to him - was he a genius, a fraud, a thief, a menace or a visionary? Ackroyd gives life and vivid characterizations to Obermann's wife Sophia, a British archaeologist, a blind scholar and to the landscape itself, making the trees and rocks resound with the echoes of the Greek gods.
The Fall of Troy is a fascinating read for those interested in Greek mythology, the Iliad or the life of Heinrich Schliemann.
âArchaeology is not a science,â Obermann says. âIt is an art.â
I have read many biographies and nonfiction books by Mr. Ackroyd and was excited to try a novel. I am sorry to say I was not as enthralled as I hoped in this particular story. Sophia is a 16-year-old Greek girl who is wooed by the famous Herr Obermann to be his wife. Her family is delighted for her to go off with him to the archaeological site of Troy, which he recently uncovered.
Mr. Obermann is a difficult man to like because he has set ideas and anything that proves to be different than his beliefs are destroyed or ignored. Another archaeologist arrives whose study takes him in a different direction from Obermann and Sophia is caught between the men.
That is the basic plot of this book. My problems with this story are that it is hard to know what is based on facts and what is total fiction. I also had a hard time liking any of the characters although it was easy to like Sophia, especially at the end of the novel.
If you enjoy archaeology and Troy especially, you will probably enjoy this novel. I just had a hard time getting through it.
I borrowed this book from my local library.
    A Glorious Rogue
Heinrich Schliemann discovered Troy, that much I knew. I had always assumed him to be some dusty nineteenth-century German professor, treading in the footsteps of the illustrious Goethe. But no.
