Calypso's continuing adventures

For those of us who fell in love with Calypso, this most recent installment, Dumping Princes, delivers a fun continuation of the previous stories. Always self-absorbed Calyso is none-the-less maturing in her relationships. Yes her 'rents are still crazy and "Freds" is seemingly uncomfortable around her, but it is Malcolm who provides her with the approval that "Freds" doesn't seem able to give her. Calypso is in for a heavy choice. Does she want the ultimate trophy boyfriend (the Crown Prince of England Prince Freds) or the creative and fun Malcolm? Thrown into the story is an international fencing competition, foreign locations, and the wackiest set of teachers I have ever seen. Worth the read...I will be waiting eagerly for more Calypso. I like her so much I even tried to name my new kitten Calypso, but my family shot that suggestion down.

Another exciting installment in the multi-faceted Calypso series

Terrible

This book had so many "big" words it was hard to understand then when I thought I had the concept down I looked forward to the ending which made no sense... it wasn't what I hoped it would be ...

definitely a waste of my time

The definition of the unreliable narrator plus accomplices

I appreciate the deliberate lack of commercial appeal in this book and although not as dense and hammering as Patrick White's efforts, it's in the ballpark. This writer wants to repel readers and works extra hard to do so. He's mighty successful at putting a reader at multiple arms' lengths, and despite the distance, the vignettes are often effective and uncomfortably intimate.

The weakness is in the point of the thing -- shocking? No, quite stock in that effort. Psychotic? Also no. You kind of know what's going on here and what will transpire within the first fifty pagesâno new ground broken. I wish the writer were smart enough to fulfill the promise of some of the prose, which is artfully spartan and beautifully poetic. The disjointed nature of the narrative is a bit of a marvel, but it succeeds in distracting rather than adding to the experience. Whenever I realize I'm congratulating myself as an attentive reader for sticking with something and taking the effort to understand the maze of an author's efforts, I immediately wish I were just reading Jane Eyre again. The book is a worthwhile experience for a broad reader, but only if you have a few hours to kill.

A Fragmented Mind

Irene & Cohorts Are Back With Non-Stop Drama!

Once again Irene Kelly, veteran reporter for the News Express, in the fictional Southern California town of Las Piernas, investigates some serious crime. One of Irene's flaws, unfortunately, is stubbornness which borders on the extreme. As intelligent as she is, she frequently acts on impulse and winds up doing what she has been specifically told not to do, often with life-threatening results. Frank Harriman, a homicide detective with La Piernas Police Department, is Irene's boyfriend and emotional support system.

Jacob Henderson, teenaged son of a district attorney candidate, comes to Irene claiming his father's opponent intends to use smear tactics and claim he is involved in a Satanic cult. A photograph was taken of the boy at a coven gathering, but he was there to convince a young girl, his friend Gethsemane (Sammy), to leave with him. Irene talks to the troubled girl, who substantiates Jacob's story. She tells the reporter that the cult is Wiccan, not Satanist. "Sweet Dreams, Irene" is non-stop drama, thrills and chills. However, the narrative is not as taut as I expected it to be, having read two of the author's other books. The primary focus here is on Irene's relationship with Frank - which I actually enjoy. They are both fascinating, well developed characters and the chemistry between them is electric. As usual, Ms. Burke surrounds Irene with a number of interesting and memorable friends and family members, characters who add to the depth and richness of the novel. Our heroine does less investigating than usual here, and, more or less, stumbles into trouble and onto clues rather than initiating the action. This is novel #2 in the series, and the author is just beginning to develop the background storyline and characters. Her writing becomes much tighter, and her plots more well defined, in future books.

Would you consider the audio edition of Category Five to be better than the print version?

I usually stick to mysteries. This was as good or better! At first I thought the narrator was going to make the listening dull, but I was pleasantly surprised. He was perfect for the part.

I totally recommend this book for its suspense, humor, and unexpected twists. Loved it.

What other book might you compare Category Five to and why?

I think this book fits in with books by Clive Cussler, but this one is more realistic. The hero is more human rather than a macho man.

Can't wait to hear the next Donovan Nash Adventure

This book exceeded my expectations! Philip Donlay's mother is a friend of mine and I purchased this book because I admire her and wanted to read a book written by her son. I could NOT stop listening. The characters are well developed and likable. The story line was fascinating--a horrible hurricane headed to destroy the Northeast, a love story, and a mystery!! The book was interesting, clean and thrilling!!!

A very good book

I listen to this book over and over. Very easy to follow. The author did his homework. It was easy to overlook the mistakes in reading.

Would be two stars without the global warming BS.

The main characters are likable - not very believable - but likable .

The performance was good.

I really lost it with the "villian" - no way he should overpower an agent once - let alone twice...

And based on the description of him no way he can get through the submersible hatch - so why is he in the raft?

Not a bad core concept - would benefit from a reality coach.

A very high level of constant suspense

Audible classifies Category Five contemporary fiction; it's actually science fiction. The theory that a very large hydrogen bomb with disrupt/destroy very large and powerful hurricane has been around for more than 50 years and has been thoroughly discredited. The idea that "global warming" will cause larger and more powerful hurricanes isn't credible because experience demonstrates the opposite. Nevertheless, Category Five provides lots of anxious uncertainty for the listener when listenes to as the science fiction that it is.

Narration is excellent.

Saving Red Sox Nation, One Plot Twist at a Time

Rick Shefchik's second Sam Skarda detective novel moves with the taut pace of a good pitcher's duel. Hired by the owner of the Red Sox to investigate a blackmail threat that asserts the 2004 Series was fixed, Shefchik's protagonist quickly finds that few loyalties can be assumed, not only among the bookies and hoods from whom he seeks information, but within the Sox front office for whom he works. Chapter after chapter, Shefchik finds ways to surprise the reader with plot twists and character nuance, along with settings from Marblehead to West Hollywood to Caracas that crackle with rich detail. One chase scene through L.A. is as good as "Bullitt" - just in printed form. A tavern in Southie smells of poorly wiped counters and stale Schaefer's. Shefchik dares the reader to accept the premise that a thrown Series from very recent memory might be possible (don't worry, Sox fans, all characters on the field or in the front office are wholly fictional), and carries it off with a narrative deftly seasoned with baseball lore. My warning: don't crack "Green Monster" on a transcontinental flight when you have brought along work reading to do. If you do, there's a good chance your briefcase will remain unopened underneath the seat in front of you.

An excuse to attach to a Boston Icon

Fenway as everyone knows is a national baseball icon with their left field wall known as the Green Monster. So the idea of a baseball star being involved in mayhem is a thin thread. If you like local scenes, ( which I do) this book might appeal to you. The plot has some merit but while I got a mild kick out this book, not losing any sleep reading it at night. Give it a twirl , you probably will have some fun and wish the Sox luck in repeating their world series win for 2014

compelling story line

Shefchik has done another nice job with Sam. The plot seems at first to require a suspension of disbelief but I think that it doesn't require citizenship in Red Sox Nation to comprehend the possibility of the premise of the story--that a baseball game could be affected by one player's decision to not play his best...Ask most people in Boston about Manny's behaviors and how they affected the Sox...But while the story has baseball in the background Rick has crafted a story with interesting characters from the semi-organized crime world. Nothing complicated here, just a good story with some very interesting twists that offers good entertainment. I can now go back to reading Gertrude Bell's life history to get to sleep faster.

I look forward to the next Sam Skarda story. Will Caroline come back?

Enjoyable

I liked this book. Good mix of baseball and mystery. Didn't give it five stars because the premise is just a bit too unbelievable.

LOTS OF FUN

This was my first MC Beaton download and I though it was just great. Many very interesting characters. The narrator did a fantastic job as well. I would highly recommend this book.

This was another good Hamish MacBeth story. They are made even better by Davina Porter's narration.

not a series for female reader

I really wanted one of the performer of the first 12 books. Barring that, a Hamish MacBeth story really NEEDS a male reader. Maybe I am just spoiled, but; . . . that is my opinion.

Don't get me wrong, th reader of this book did a great job with the Outlander series. But she is a poor choice for the hardcore Hamish fans like me.

Great fun

A relaxing, witty listen. As a hard-core Agatha Raisin fan, this was my first foray into to the world of Hamish and very enjoyable it was! Full of witty banter and an enjoyable storyline. The narration was excellent. I will be going on to listen to further escapades of the lovely Hamish.

Disappointed with chararcter of Scott, Tyler's dad.

I'm halfway through the book but I am so disappointed with the character of Scott that I wanted to come here and see what other people thought of the book.

Scott does not know everything that we, the reader knows, and yet he wants to stop the experimental procedure that may save his son's life. He has no idea what recovery his son may or may not make but the possibility is there that he may become a functioning human being again. This, however, is not good enough for Scott. He admits he is afraid of not recognizing his son, "the person he once was is gone". Well, that's a little self-serving. We, the reader, know that Sarmaggio is out for personal gain but Scott is just assuming this, he has nothing to base this on. He knows nothing about Cleaver's experiments. I keep thinking "what exactly does Scott know at this point" and what I come up with is that he knows his son suffered a horrible accident and that his brain is damaged. He also knows that many areas of the brain are functioning normally and he knows that there is an experimental procedure that may restore even more function to his son's brain. And yet, he resents the machines that are keeping his son alive. I just don't see his point of view. I can only understand his point of view when I look at it from the reader's viewpoint....but that is NOT Scott's viewpoint. He is not privy to all the information that the reader is. I keep thinking, if this were my son and I was offered this opportunity, I'd take it. Yes, that's my opinion and I would be more open to Scott's opinion if there were some reasoning for it. There's not. Scott is afraid his son may not recover enough to care for himself and yes, that is a possibility but there's also the possibility that he may make a recovery. Scott doesn't even know the odds, the doctors don't know the odds, I can't see any father not taking the chance even if he knew that the odds were stacked against him. I'd want that chance for my kid.

Oh, and what was this ... about the doctor that Kate went to talk to, the one who said how many people died while they were doing the first heart operations. What exactly was his point? Was he saying that research shouldn't be done because you may not be able to save the patient? That reasoning didn't make any sense to me. The patients would've died without the experimental surgery and if they died during it then that's a tragedy but I'm sure something was learned from it. Look how many heart operations are done now, obviously the research was worth it. He seemed to be saying that this type of research is detrimental to the patient. I just don't share that viewpoint and I don't believe many surgeons would agree with that either.

Fatally flawed for me.

Darnton is a good writer and explores interesting ideas in his novels, but MindCatcher is a fatally flawed story for me, praise from the NYTimes book reviewer notwithstanding.

Embarrased to love this series- but I do

I am embarrassed to suggest the undead shoe loving vampire series to my friends but I truely enjoy the Betsey books. The audio makes me laugh out loud- a great light-hearted listen. This latest is a good as the rest

The saga continues

Just another installment. OK plot and such. Didn't Learn anything new about the world. Meh.

Wonderful Mix of Humor Horror and Love

I've listened to all of the undead series until now and this book tops all of the events you thought were the end in book 6. Ending with unexpected twists and turns this book never fails to entertain, delight, and even get your fangs watering a little. Certainly worth the time and cost this book is great for any vampire lover, over 18 of course ;-)

Deadly Hilarious

I always thought of Betsy Taylor funny but slightly irritating in the book series.

This is the first audible I've downloaded from the series, and I have to say reading and hearing are two entirely different processes. Thanks to the narrator's funny take on the characters, it became more hilarious and quite addictive to listen to.

Don't read this book first!

This book is part of the "undead" series, which is a real hoot! I enjoy them very much, but you have to read them in order or you are lost.

I think this is the weakest book in the series so far. The humor wasn't quite as sharp, the story not as riveting, and Betsy barely mentions her shoe collection!

I am really hoping that the next book brings back the fun, or Betsy may cease to be a favorite character.

The basement scene when Myra was telling the murderer off and then she told him what he could and could not expect to happen next.

The scene in which Myra was speaking to her dead daughter`s ghost.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Charles told his wife all systems were go. They completed the mIission and were waiting on her to do her part.

I am a great fan of Fern Michaels and I love the Sisterhood Novels. I realized I had already read the Vendetta when I first got into the first chapter. That is when I discovered I wish I had gotten it and the rest on CD format instead of download them on this Laptop. I wish the same for the Bible series I have gotten from Audible. I am having problems getting them to play. When I finally get them to play I have to stay with it untill that one is finished. Both because I am enjoying it/them and because I am afraid I wont be able to get it/them to play again. I am so glad I have joined Audible!

I am hooked on the series

I am enjoying working my way through the series. this book unveils a great plan of revenge

disappointing

As a long time fan of Fern Michaels, I really was so disappointed. All of these acts of revenge were so anticlimactic, churlish, and unnecessary. Sometimes one really needs to strike back, but these women need to embrace their lives and not their hatred. I look forward to a better book from this wonderful author. The narration was good!

Another great caper

The girls are off on another caper that this time takes some of them out of the country. Myra takes off on a crazy trucking expedition, that is so out of her realm that it becomes quite funny and unexpected. The ole gal proves to her pomp and circumstance self that she still has it. As I have said before, these books would be cozy's if not for some brutality that is needed to keep the series true to itself as a revenge story. I will definitely be revisiting this series and wonderful characters soon. Again, Laural Merlington's excellent voice brings the adventure and all of these eclectic characters to life.
