Great story, great narration

No novel by Trevanian is a straightforward matter. Part thriller, part satire, EIGER SANCTION is an extremely well written treatise on mountain climbing, a dig at celebrity culture, an examination of the mind of a killer and in the final analysis; a great story. While a little slow to get going, the novel quietly builds up a head of steam, and while there is lots of diversion along the way,once the tension starts rising the pace never lets up.

The narrator is really good.

Good satire and thriller

I just loved this book. The story is build up very well towards climbing the Eiger. The climbing itself is an awful good chapter with a surprising final. The narrator Joe Barret is really excellent. And folks; I am a girl and did not mind the fancy bits at all.

Pretty Good Listen- Great Narrator- Little Slow

I'm a guy, so I didn't mind the sexism as much as much as a woman might. The protagonist is a cliche, but if you can accept him for the arrogant pig that he seems to be, then you might start to actually like him by the end of the story. Even the names of the characters are "tongue in cheek"- an indication that they represent stereotypes- but they are all interesting. I'm sure there is some "deeper meaning" in the story that could be explored by a college Literature class, but I'm not "that deep" and just enjoyed them all at face value.

It was narrated very well and the story kept my interest- it is an action/mystery more than a romance. This one might be enjoyed more by a "guy" than a woman... I don't think easily offended feminists will like the main character very much. There definately IS much commentary on society in general and, if you "get" the satire, it will make you smile.

Held My Attention

Some mystery - story enough to hold the reader's attention - and just enough to provoke some anger at the protagonist.

Great story

I've seen the movie many times and loved it. The book is also great and just different enough to still be interesting.

Love Tessa Barclay Books!

I will read all the books by this author that I can find. She writes amusing light comedies set generally in England. (She also writes a mystery series--also good.) Her characters are well-developed, and the stories are always interesting. This entertaining story provides an interesting insight into family dynamics. Like other books by Barclay, I was sad to see it end--because it was so wonderful to read.

Resonating family record

A lot of audio books put me to sleep; this one kept me awake. I currently have a difficult relationship with my own parents and this book resonates with me. I am considering writing my own book, in an effort to understand my own emotional heritage. I will be listening again. "To understand, you must forgive;" perhaps good advice. Excellent narration. I am viewing Richard Madeley with respect as a result of listening to this book.

She is a great writer

this book in particular is amazing its, setting was true to the time and city, a really wonderful book and in great condition. i give it five stars!

A teengirl in the London Punkscene coping with all problems.

About a girl of my age who is actually doing alot of things which u would say she's too young for. She's got a sister who's an drugaddict and al- most dies of it. A younger brother which she must take care of a bit, but not always doing it. It's in the London streets in the Punktime, and very kewl to read!

Amazing story and writing

I could not put this book down. The story is so grisly and yet told without any sentimentality or self-pity. The writing is excellent. I ended the book full of admiration for the writer who came off as brave and very, very smart. A real artist. A beautiful and sometimes shocking book.

A cool book that gives you a valuable insight as to how a teenage mind works and has great characters like her sister Ruby and the cool Quentin!! It's so good I'm doing my RPR on it!

Wonderful, Read

I read the book in two days and i literally screamed "NOOOOOOOOO" when i noticed i was done reading the book ! "Plenty Good Room" was an awesome read and i was actually gratefully to come across such a good, have you on your toes, clean book. I cried, laughed, bite my fingernails, walked back and forth, shouted amen and reflected on the powerful words spoken in the book that would more than often relate to some part of my life. My tradition when i usually read a book is to underline clever or powerful sentences and i was underlining like nobody's business. Even if your not a big reader it is an easy read and in the first page you'll get attached. I hope the author is having a sequel for this book because i have so many unanswered questions about the other characters. All in All I LOVE this book.

strong look at the dangerous life of a teen runaway

In Springfield, Illinois caring professional Tamara Britton works diligently at her job in the Child Protective Unit's Stabilization Section of Care for Kids Agency. However, she hides from her friends, peers and clients her desire to learn about her own roots behind a faade of control. Her world is nuked when her friend field worker Lynnette Moore asks her to take in fourteen year old runaway Miss Sienna "mouthy" Larson.

The out of control teen misbehaves constantly leaving Tamara with a big headache as to what to do with the recalcitrant sassy "Little Miss Thang". She also finds the "housepitality" border gets Tamara to finally look into her own past as the kid has hammered at her protective barrier forcing the anger and discontent of the adult to surface. Tamara is at a crossroads of letting go or rebuilding her battlement.

This is a strong look at the dangerous life of a teen runaway as Sienna steals the show with her mouth that never rests although Tamara is the fully developed star. The story line is driven by their relationship but changing perspectives jolts the plot. Still readers will enjoy this fine inspirational tale as Sienna in her street sass style teaches Tamara that caring for someone else and oneself is not only okay but encouraged by the Lord.

Sweet, fun story despite some few far-fetched coincidences

âI like this book first for its depiction of foster parents as caring people struggling to cope with kids who can be difficult. Though the fosters in this book are painted a bit too angelic for real life, it is a nice switch from the stereotypical monsters depicted in much fiction. Overall, this is a sweet story about a hypersensitive social worker, Tamara, dealing with Sienna, a foster child assigned to her department's care.

Listen to the first book before this!

This is a follow up to the book Beautiful Lies by the same author, so the first thing to say is "Listen to that first!". If you don't, you'll find the story confusing.

Now, if you *have* listened to the other book, you'll know roughly what to expect. The story itself is pretty good, but I did think that it was in danger of "jumping the shark" at a couple of points. I know some are frustrated in that it doesn't wrap everything up with no loose ends at the end (as in the previous book). To be fair, life is like that, so I don't think it's a bad thing myself. However, it was a bit weaker as a story, and a few plot leaps were stretches. There's also a section, about two thirds of the way through where they chapters jump back and forth in time. If you're not careful, you could lose track of things there, so not one to listen to as you're dozing off to sleep at night.

Elizabeth Kaye does a good job, keeping the pace going with enough emotion in each of the characters voices to keep you interested.

All in all, it's a nice little time filler of a novel, with some reasonable twists and turns.

Good for Fatboy!

This was a fun continuation of the story, I am going to read the next one too. I did get a little irritated at the repetition of some parts of the story from the fist book, isn't it assumed that one should read this as the 2nd in the trilogy so should know the story and not need the back ground explanations.

Once one gets over the authors need to thinly disguise Kenya and Kibera...it makes good reading. I liked it.

A disappointment after his other Harrods novel

I bought this book because I really enjoyed his first publication about Harrods. I am struggling to finish the book - structure is poor; and writing is bland and predictable - especially given the location and characters.

funny and perceptive

Fatboy and the Dancing Ladies is the second book in the Kuwisha Trilogy by author Michael Holman. Once again set in Kireba, the largest slum in the small East African nation of Kuwisha, it follows on immediately from the events of the first book, Last Orders at Harrods. Business is good at the popular Harrods International Bar (and Nightspot), but widowed owner, Charity Mupanga is worried about the behaviour of her suitor, Edward Furniver, manager of the micro-lending bank nearby: could he have a drinking problem? Two of the glue-sniffing Mboya Boys, Titus Ntoto and Cyrus Rutere enjoy Charity's patronage but are worried about their friend (and stowaway on the London flight), Bright Khumato. Bright's arrival in London prompts the Clarion newspaper to send their ambassador for Nose-Aid, TV personality Geoffrey Japer to Kuwisha to publicise a scheme to swap debt for saving endangered rhinos and help street kids at the same time.
