A German Shepherd police dog witnesses a murder and if his owner - an Iraq war vet and former cop-turned-thief - is convicted of the crime, the dog could be put down.
Few rival Andy Carpenter's affection for dogs, and he decides to represent the poor canine. As Andy struggles to convince a judge that this dog should be set free, he discovers that the dog and his owner have become involved unwittingly in a case of much greater proportions than the one they've been charged with.
Andy will have to call upon the unique abilities of this ex-police dog to help solve the crime and prevent a catastrophic event from taking place.

    Wanna have some fun?
The Book: You don't read one of Rosenfelt's Andy Carpenter novels hoping for some profound insight. They likely will never win some hoity-toity award. You should read them because they are just plain entertaining. Some have excellent plots (like this one) others not so excellent... but they all are just a fine way to spend a few hours laughing and they are never ever boring. Wanna spend about eight hours doing something fun? Just for you? Buy and listen. A-
The Reader: Ahhh Grover. There is just no better voice to read Carpenter. Rosenfelt changes tenses about every six minutes, and Grover keeps up. Yeah... Grover suffers doing some characterizations... but who cares? HA! Wait 'til you hear him do Larry king. It's a hoot! In some books this would be important and even ruin the whole book. Here no. He so captures the tone and goofiness that is the Carpenter crowd... I pray he will be around forever. A.
Don't Buy This Book! Even though it's GRAAAATE!
Dont buy this book! If if you have NOT read Rosenfelts Andy Carpenter series from the beginning. Okay, this novel sizzles. Its tightly plotted, the dialogue sparkles, the ensemble cast work tighter together thana Super Bowl defensive line. I reeeeely like these people. And Grover Gardener brings them alive. I cannot imagine anyone else playing smart-ass attorney Andy Gardner. Nope change that I dont want to imagine anyone else.
The thing is that while Dog Tags stands alone, it refers back from time to time to cool stuff the characters did in early books. Which might spoil them for you. Soooooo dont take the chance.
If youve listened to (in order) Open And Shut, First Degree, Dead Center, and Play Dead well, wuddahell Get Dog Tags listen and lovvit. Otherwise Treat yourself from the beginning and... Dont buy this book! Kay?
    Tail-wagging good!
I downloaded this audiobook because, like the protagonist, I'm a "dog lunatic," but in addition to the canine appeal, I also found an engaging story and a main character with a surprisingly sympathetic, yet amusingly wise-ass personality. Could anyone else pull off, with a straight face, a client meeting with a German Shepard? I'm going to start from the first in the series now that I've found this author. In addition, the reader has a great voice that seems well matched to the story. Definitely two paws up!
    As usual, quite wonderful
David Rosenfelt has won my heart with his 'doggie' mysteries. I was so very happy to discover this latest one.

    Publisher: Penguin Audio

    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
An exhilarating new novel from the New York Times-bestselling authors.
Shell-shocked and missing a foot-lost to an IED during his tour of duty in Afghanistan-Captain Tom Forsyth has been sent "home" by the army and, at loose ends, returns to his estranged mother's house for the first time since he joined up at seventeen. But Josephine Kauri, the "first lady of British racing," has always put the horses she trains first and her family last. Tom soon finds himself strained to the breaking point with his mother and stepfather.
But there's another reason for the stifling tension at Kauri House Stables: Josephine is being blackmailed for a hefty sum every week-and forced to make her horses lose. Retirement is not an option, as she has been warned that it will result in the thing she most fears: exposure and ridicule... and prison, when the government finds out what she's been hiding.
Tom sets out to discover and defeat this hidden enemy using his finely honed military skills.

    Ho Hum
I can't say I was disappointed by this title but then again I wasn't expecting very much to begin with. I bought it and I did read it from cover to cover (so to speak) but I found it lacking. I didn't hate it but I most assuredly did not love it. The language is mundane; gone the finely tuned diction, that product of an old school English education, that was so much in evidence when Dick was writing with his wife Mary (who some say was the actual author). The characters were disappointing and in some cases not even believable (like the hero's mother). I won't go on. You get the picture. This is not the Dick Francis I had come to know and love; this is definitely the next generation.
Now that we have established that Felix is not his parents, let me also comment that Crossfire is also not the best of Felix's work. I much preferred DEAD HEAT and SILKS.
    Crossfire
Found the title interesting as it can have different meaning by different professions and both were in use in this story, military and horse racing. This was a bit different than other Francis books but I noted the son Felix was a co-writer. I enjoyed the book and the personal questioning of what can he do after being injured in Afghanistan. Wish there was more about the horses but there was information about horse racing stables. Looking forward to more stories from Francis.
    Ho Hum
I really miss Dick Francis. Unfortunately, Felix Francis is a poor writer working his father's formula but without the page-turning magic Dick Francis was so good at. The character in this book was off-putting as well. Nuts. I was really hoping Felix could carry it off.
Really liked the direction and the crafting of the lead character!
Well done! Great plot... It had me thinking the story was going in a different direction at the end! Surprised
    Poorly written, badly performed
This book was supposedly written by Dick Francis during the period that he was handing the reins over to his son Felix. But anyone who is familiar with Francis Senior's writing will know he had very little to do with this one. Even when his central character had flaws and problems, there was none of the handwringing and whiny self-examination that permeates Felix's main characters. Martin Jarvis's overblown reading only accentuates the problems, making even the most innocuous internal question sound like a decision of cosmic importance.

    awful!
the speaker voice is awful! His dialects are not too bad, but his British accent is just repulsive. the 1st chapter of this book is so boring - Creasey goes on and on and on about the main character (not the Detective, but the crook). Worse book of his I've heard
    Classic Detective
A good detective story in the old style, believable storyline and interesting characters, as well as satisfaction with finish.

    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
If you thought fiction couldn't get darker than then think again. Nineteen Seventy Seven, the second installment of the Red Riding Quartet, is one long nightmare.
It's heroes - the half decent copper Bob Fraser and the burnt-out hack Jack Whitehead - would be considered villains in most people's books. Fraser and Whitehead have one thing in common though; they're both desperate men dangerously in love with Chapeltown prostitutes.
And as the summer moves remorselessly towards the bonfires of Jubilee Night, the killings accelerate and it seems as if Fraser and Whitehead are the only men who suspect or care that there may be more than one killer at large.
Out of the horror of true crime, David Peace has fashioned a work of terrible beauty. David Peace (born 1967) is an English author.
He was named one of the Best of Young British Novelists by Granta in 2003 and won the 2004 James Tait Black Memorial Prize for Fiction. Also known for his novels GB84 and The Damned United, the latter was made into a feature film starring Michael Sheen.
    Critic Reviews:
"Quite simply, this is the future of British crime fiction." (Time Out)
"The pace is relentless, the style staccato-plus and the morality bleak and forlorn....Peace's voice is powerful and unique." (Guardian)

Elevates True Crime Fiction to Literature
The Red Riding Quartet is shocking, especially for those of us who really enjoy Masterpiece Mystery. The language is obscene, the situations are brutal, and the characters are vile. There are no heroes here; every character is deeply flawed. But his style is that of Literature with a capital L. Some of the passages read like free verse poetry. Symbollic imagery threads throughout the books. In "1980" there are many passages of stream of consciousness -- think Joyce's Ulysses. The quartet is a single story that unfolds over 10 years. Each book is very different: told from different characters' points of view. Each book has it's own style. We Agatha Christie fans need to be patient with these books because underneath all of the Evil, there is a very clear and certain Morality. A Morality that has been violated, but it is there in every book.
Truly, these books are not for everyone. They are absolutely horrifying, the stuff of nightmares, but they are also very beautifully thought out and executed.
    Atmospheric, dark tale.
Great reader, and very dark story. The level of the writing is high and the characters feel authentic to their time and place.
I want more! Can't wait for the last two in the series.
Harder than "1974" but don't give up!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
The Red Riding Quartet overall is excellent and deserves a good readership. It's definitely not for everybody, but lots of stuff isn't so whatever.
What did you like best about this story?
The presentation of The Year 1977 itself--the Jubilee, the sense of social breakdown. Very much engaged with a very turbulent and unsettling moment of British history. In my view, this quality makes 1977 the most rewarding book of the series.
What about Saul Reichlins performance did you like?
Reichlin is all-around superb as a reader of the Quartet.

    Publisher's Summary:
Australia is one of the last places where life still exists after nuclear war starts in the Northern Hemisphere. A year on, an invisible cloak of radiation has spread almost completely around the world.
Darwin is a ghost town, and radiation levels at Ayres Rock are increasing. An American nuclear-powered submarine has found its way to Australia, where its captain has placed the boat under the command of the Australian Navy. Commander Dwight Towers and his Australian liaison officer are sent to the coast of North America to discover whether a stray radio signal originating from near Seattle is a sign of life.
    Members Reviews:
    What could have been.
An almost true story about the aftermath of the very brief WWIII (due to the inclusion of nukes). Considering how one man prevented this from happening during the Cuban Missile Crisis, this story is quite realistic. It lets you look into the psychology of people who have the luxury/curse of knowing the date of their death because of the upcoming nuclear fallout. It gives them fear while also letting them truly live. It's an interesting concept to observe as you wonder just how you would live if you knew when you were going to die. Nevil Shute pulls no punches as this is a very sad story overall.
Be warned however that unless you find the subject matter fascinating you may not greatly enjoy this. It can be a little depressing and there isn't much excitement in the story. It is more about observing how ordinary people in Australia live knowing they will soon be dead because of a war they did not want.
    Nuclear War Classic
On the Beach, written by Nevil Shute and published in 1957 is a somber post apocalyptic novel that follows survivors in Australia after a nuclear war and subsequent radioactive fallout has contaminated most of the world. Much of the story revolves around an American nuclear submarine, the last of the US Navy, docked in Melbourne and under the command of Captain Dwight Towers. The post apocalyptic world has been contaminated with high levels of radiation stemming from the use of cobalt bombs by the Russian and Chinese military forces. This story is character driven, focusing on the struggle for people to maintain some sense of purpose in spite of their doom. It was slightly disappointing that most of the people in On the Beach basically give up and passively accept death. Why didnt they attempt to create a shelter in which some people could survive until the levels of radioactivity decreased? (scientists mention several times that the radioactive cobalt has a 5-10 year half-life) Released at the height of the Cold War, On the Beach has elements of a warning or cautionary tale and is clearly written with some political intentions in mind. While On the Beach is a well written novel that explores some important ideas worthy of consideration, it is slow-paced and uneventful at times. If you are looking for excitement and entertainment you may want to look at some other reading options.
    Dying With Dignity
Where does On the Beach rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
On the Beach is definitely the best apocalyptic audiobook I've listened to. It's a classic for a reason and Nevil Shute handled his subject matter masterfully.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
How to answer this one. Not really 'edge of my seat' as I knew going into it what the outcome would be.

Blueeyedboy is the brilliant new novel from Joanne Harris: a dark and intricately plotted tale of a poisonously dysfunctional family, a blind child prodigy, and a serial murderer who is not who he seems.
Told through posts on a Web journal called badguysrock, this is a thriller that makes creative use of all the multiple personalities, disguise and mind games that are offered by playing out a life on the Internet.
    Members Reviews:
    A dark and twisted Tale
If you are expecting a lighthearted book involving chocolate and frippery, then you may be disappointed. If, on the other hand, you want a dark and gripping story where the lines between fiction and reality are so blurred even the protagonists are unsure what is true and what is not, then read on. I fell into the latter camp.
The story is told through the public and private web journals of Blueeyed Boy, a 40-something living at home with his mother, and Albertine, a woman with a shadowy past. The web posts blend fact and fiction, but who are Blueeyed Boy and Albertine, and is Blueeyed Boy a murderer or someone who dreams of being one? This book has divided opinion judging by reviews on other sites, and is unquestionably unsettling. However, the plot twists towards the end came (to me at least) as a complete surprise, and the tension builds ominously. As the hole in which we view the characters' lives widens with more journal posts, we come to question what we thought we knew. As well as being a gripping story in its own right, the story highlights the dangers of thinking we know people we meet in the virtual world.
    Highly recommended.
    Blueeyed boy
I found the story line confusing and never got to grips with the characters despite two attempts to listen. The ending was an anti climax and didn't really explain the plot

"Moores most hysterical love story to date." (Booklist)

    WOW!!!
Very rarely do I believe anything in life is worthy a perfect score, however Bite Me has earned this exception. Christopher Moore is one of the greatest authors/story-tellers of all time and Bite Me is the epitome of his talent. Very rarely do you come across an author that possesses the talent to evoke our raw emotions, and even rarer in a fictional environment. And not to short change Susan Bennett as her incredible narrative talent and multiple voices most certainly helped bring this story to life.
I am a big proponent of not spoiling a story and therefore will limit my comments. Rest assured however, Bite Me and the two other books in this series (Blood Sucking Fiends and You Suck) are truly worthy of your time.
Bite Me does a superb job of tying-up the loose strings left after You Suck. I am in awe of Christopher Moore’s literary ability used to develop the characters over the course of these three novels. I can’t help but feel the same love, compassion and concern one might have for a non fictional character. I now truly understand the meaning (and emotions) of a bitter-sweet ending. Although I believe Bite Me will be the last chapter in this current saga, I do hope the author guy chooses to continue bringing back our favorite characters. Certainly the inspectors will be back and who can’t imagine the fun and troubles of Abby and Lilly. As I don’t want to spoil anything, I will only say that there are two other characters that I hope might find their way back.
Bottom line; read, re-read and then read again the three Christopher Moore vampire books (or should I say listen to).
k-so this book is frickin hilarious!
I literaly wet myself I was laughing so hard.
Mr Moore has outdone himself, and I dont think any other narrater than Susan Bennett could have done this reading justice.

    This book is fantastic
I didn't realize that this book had been around for awhile. I was calling several people that like Cormac McCarthy and books that I enjoy and telling them I had a new guy they had to read. The joke is on me this book has been around awhile. All that being said it was a fantastic read. The plot make incredibly brutal characters seem logical and even a bit noble. I'd recommend this one to anyone that enjoys a bit of the darker side of people and characters.
    Really filthy, horrifying white boys.
What made the experience of listening to Dirty White Boys the most enjoyable?
Hard to choose. This book is one-of-a-kind, IMHO. The three guys who break out of prison are repulsive. We follow their excrescent exploits with fascination and a great big measure of disgust. However, the writing is so good that one gets trapped in the suspense. The plot holds your attention very closely. Like, what abominable thing will they do next?
What did you like best about this story?
The plot is almost gripping. (It has been about a month since I finished this book, and I have forgotten many of the names.) The leader of the pack is revolting (I might run out of words for repulsive), an animal with no lower boundaries on his violent behavior. His buddy is a cipher who can't speak and will follow his leader to Hell. The other guy is trapped and cannot escape. The good guys, OTOH, are quite flawed, which is what makes them interesting. The hero is torn between his wife and his lover, who happens to be the widow of his dead partner. Much guilt?
Have you listened to any of Eric G. Doves other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have, although I can't remember any of the books' names. (Is anybody else near 68 having memory troubles like this? This is awful.) His voice is easy to listen to, and his range is quite good. This book does need an effective narrator. A less talented narrator might make many of the most violent scenes impossible to listen to. (You do need to know that there is some truly dreadful violence in this book. Can't have the entire plot without it.)
If you could rename Dirty White Boys, what would you call it?
I don't like Qs like this.
    Pure Grit Entertainment!
I love thrillers, special forces novels, police, legal stories etc. but always really loved Stephen Hunter's books. This one stands out to me- really hardcore state trooper and some bad ass Oklahoma escaped cons on a rampage. Really great characters. Hardcore entertainment packed start to finish!
    Dirty White Boys
Seldom will you read a Book such as this, describing in detail the inner feelings of an Officer who has to face the perils of the the big ugly world outside. I enjoyed this Book tremendously.
    Wow!
Absolutely a incredible book by Stephen Hunter! I will read everything he has written.

Abridged Edition - Ruined the book
Having read this book several times - I can accurately say that whoever did the edit for the abridged edition absolutely RUINED this book. It is disjointed and so many key elements to the book that make it really interesting - not to mention sizzle - are left out. I knew better than to buy an abridged, but I like the original story so much I wanted to give it a try. I strongly advise that you pass on this. It's a shame that they couldn't bother to put the UNABRIDGED version on here. Save you points/money on this and go buy the book - the WHOLE book - it's much better.
    Too bad
This is my favorite Linda Howard book. I tried the abridged format since it's the only one Audible made available, but it was a big disappointment. The narrator was pretty bad - you really couldn't tell who was talking, and so many really good parts of the book were omitted. The unabridged version is so much better (especially the narrator), but it's not available on Audible.
    Waste of Money
I love Linda Howard and this book was just butchered. I was so upset by listening to it they cut out all the good parts of the book. Don't waste your money or a credit the way I did!
