Lives up to the hype

After hearing of the huge advance Kathleen MacMahon received for this novel and the publishing hype around it I was ready to be critical ! However there needs to be more hype around this beautiful novel. It is the sort of book that you want to start listening to all over again once you've finished. It's the sort of book you want to buy for all your friends. So beautifully written and narrated I felt that I was there, living with the characters. The descriptions of the coast are so evocative I wanted to move to Ireland. In a way this is superior chick lit, superior Marian Keyes but so much more. I have struggled to find anything else to listen to since finishing this amazing novel.

Beautiful and poignant

Great characters in this Irish family with connections to their American-Irish family. A story written with grace and insight into the vagaries of love and death between humans, animals and the glories of the planet. This story is well formed and will have you both laughing and crying at different times. Thoroughly enjoyable and one that will remain in the mind for a long time to come.

My only criticism is there are frequent lines quoted from songs and the narrator Caroline Lennon made no attempt to put the words to music which left the lyrics sounding somewhat flat and dull. Perhaps the narrator is tone deaf or did not know the tunes, but I just felt it was the one negative for an audible listen.

Oh so sugar sweet romance....not for everyone

This is a sugary sweet romance story with a little too much real life for me. There were some funny moments, some interesting characters (Ryder) and a ghost for a little mystery. However, I found the everyday life of "building" the Inn boring. Too much focus on remodeling, shelves, mirrors and light fixtures. At times I felt like I was listening to "This Old House" (BORING)

I liked the narrator (personal preference) and didn't feel as though he took away from the story.

I will listen to the next book in this trilogy because it's Ryder's story and I really found him to be the most interesting character. Let's just hope it's less about light fixtures and crown molding.

Speed up your MP3 Player!

I really enjoyed this story. The narration was driving me INSANE - he speaks so slowly and deliberately. Then I found the setting to speed up the audiobook playback to faster. WHAT a relief, I am actually enjoying the story now. His female voices are still poor, in fact all the characters sound very similar except Ryder. Too bad this is Owen's story. I like the family, I like the locale, and I like the pets; seems like you often have dogs in a Nora story! As are most of her trilogies, these are romances so the relationships are the main focus of the story. It is interesting because there are some story arcs that span all three books and others that complete within each volume.

The Inn Boonsboro Trilogy is also very unusual, in that Boonsboro is a real town and the businesses named really exist and are actually owned by Nora Roberts and/or her family. They rehabbed the historic inn, had a terrible fire while it was under construction and had to start over. You can actually go and stay in the rooms, which are all named after famous fictional couples, although I suspect the ghost in the Elizabeth & Darcy room is a literary device! I also thought it was great fun that they have an Eve & Roarke room, the husband and wife team that is featured in 40+ Eve Dallas stories by Nora Roberts writing as J.D.

I Enjoyed It

Although, it was a stand alone book, I wish I had started with the other books first, so I would know the characters. I like hearing about characters that the writer has already written about. Now I will go back read the first two. It was believable--enjoyed the relationship with the two main characters. But I wonder whether the majority of young folk that get themselves in the situation really have that much stamina to go out on their own--they did in this one. This wasn't my favorite performance by Joyce Bean, because I know I have enjoyed her more in other readings.

Enjoyable series, but

The first two books in the this series were great because of the story line and the narrator, Julia Gibson. I listened to this third book because I wanted to complete the series, but the narrator did not make it an easy listen. She is annoying and her character voices are dull.

Enjoyable

I selected one of the books the Lakeshore series on a lark from my local library and have gone on to read/listen to the entire Lakeshore Chronicles series. It's and enjoyable series when you are looking for light, easy reading/listening.

The narrator didn't do it for me

The narrator drove me crazy during this book. I don't think it was intentional but I think she had an accent that kept coming out because it was not consistent. Towards the end of the book I sped up the narration and it helped too. I think she was also reading way to slow. I guess I'll be reading the rest of the books verses listening.

Rich, well written story...a treasure!

This story is so well written, the timing in this book is perfect. Modern characters, that are rich with story. Each person so interesting. The flow and melody of this story just sings. I loved it, can you tell. The author did a fantastic job but even with that the wrong narrator can ruin it. Ms. Hicks...a solid "10". I applaud your work in this book. When you read "Victoria" I swear I could "see" her. That same attention was given to every character. I found myself talking to them. Amazing! This story develops like an archaeological find...the secrets working their way to the surface, so unpredictable.

Thank you everyone. This is treasure for sure.

Touching Love Story

I really liked the story line. While others may think it to unrealistic I think at times we all need to be reminded of true lasting love.

This was a very heart warming book and totally enjoyed readying it. Its one you don't want to put down....... a story is so well written, and worth buying.

This is one of my favorite books. I love the characters Jack and Catherine. Well read! Great audio so you can hear all the conversations even when softly spoken.

What did you love best about Webs of Fate?

The story is a fast paced window into the world of department stores and high fashion laced with mystery, intrigue, suspense and romance. The author does a masterful job of writing the chapters to prevent the listeners/ reader from putting the book down. Its almost impossible not wanting to know what is going to happen next.

Entertained for hours!

Let me start by saying that this is a long book! It is over 15 hours...one of the longer ones I have in my library. However, the cliff-ending chapters are short, which I love, and kept me listening! For those of you who like long listens, this may be the one for you! It is the first book I have read in this series, as well as my first from this author. If I choose to listen to the others, I now have a good understanding of the characters, being that this is the Prequel to Darlene Quinn's Web Series. Either way, it is able to be read as a stand-alone, if you so desire. The author seems to have written a book that appeals to lovers of multiple genres. She covers mystery, romance, and suspense and includes themes of greed, loyalty, lies, love, and crime. It will be especially loved by those who find interest in the 80's high end department stores.

The narration was good, except for the beginning of the novel. The narrator's pace was very quick for the first hour or two...it almost sounded rushed (at normal speed). I'm not sure if I just got used to it or if she slowed down, but I think her speed contributed a bit to my confusion in parts of the book. However, I felt her voices, tone, and inflection were right on cue. I think Karin Allers was a good match for this audiobook!

I rated Webs of Fate by Darlene Quinn 4 stars instead of 5 because I felt that the story could have been of shorter length. The multi-layered plot and introduction of multiple characters had me confused at times. I found myself re-listening to chapters so I could figure out what I missed. This was okay to me at first, since the chapters were short, but after doing it in five different parts, I started to become a little bothered. However, this is just my own personal opinion.

2nd Time and Even Better

I read the print version several years ago and loved it. This audiobook performance is terrific. I found the book as intriguing as ever. Very, very interesting story. I will probably listen to it again in a year or so.

Nice Similes, But Otherwise Bland Exoticism

While A. D. Miller does a nice job painting quirky scenes in early 2000's Russia, he relies too heavily on the same devices, high school poetry lines like "the city smelt of lust" just start to build up and eventually become repetitive. Also, nearly all of the characters are one dimensional and predictable and all are exoticized post-Soviet archetypes -- the young beautiful Russian woman using sex to manipulate a well-meaning, but naive Westerner, the mafia thug turned corporate enforcer. That combined with the narrator's bizarre attempt at pronouncing Russian words and accents made it borderline unlistenable. For someone who has lived in Russia (during this period) and speaks Russian, the whole thing was quite off-putting. I would be fine if the narrator simply said the words in an English accent, instead, he tried incredibly hard to pronounce them correctly -- sometimes failing spectacularly in the process -- but always saying the words and lines so uncomfortably and painfully that it was really jarring and broke with the flow of the listening experience. He seemed to think that Russian is a very nasally language (it's not) and that the Russian accent in English makes speakers sound like they are constantly asphyxiating. Masha, the love interest and second most important person in the book, always sounds like she is being strangled whenever she speaks. In voicing her dialogues in this way, the narrator literally choked the life out of the character. Maybe this book would be more bearable in analog form, but the overall tone of the writing is so condescending and colonial towards everything Russian that, as someone who lived there and continue to live in the region, I could not force myself more than about a quarter way through this one.

Can't recommend it, but I would be interested to hear differing opinions.

Great book for cat lovers!!

Ambrose, the cat, is on his ninth life, and looking for a new home after his last mistress has died. He realizes that his cute and cuddly days have passed their 'sell-by date'. But he's sure he can convince one more person of his value. He sneaks his way into a single fire fighter's house and plans to stay there. His firefighter has found a sweet girl at the local pet store who seems to be a great 'cat whisper' for settling Ambrose into his life for long enough to find a permanent home for Ambrose.

Ambrose has no plans of leaving, and is sure everyone will settle in quit wonderfully if he can just get rid of that terrible 'cougar lady' that his firefighter seems to think he enjoys dating. Through many humorous and worrisome events, love, forgiveness, and 'pet persuasion' Ambrose gets everything perfectly settled.

This is the very best 'cat /pet' book that I've read in a long time!! If you love your cat or other pet, this book is definitely for you!!

Enjoyed the story

Here to stay was an enjoyable story, about a young woman who had taken care of her younger, blind brother since her mother had disappeared when they were young. The story has some mystery to it, which I loved, as well as romance. The narrator did a great job telling the story, and it's one I'd listen to again.

Loved this book but to many pauses Long pause between chapters and between where story changes occur. In fact I checked my device to see if it shut off. If the story wasn't so good I would not have finished it.

A Jolly Good Yarn!

What made the experience of listening to The Common Lawyer the most enjoyable?

It's quick pace and likeable characters.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Andy himself, he's a good guy, if a bit flawed - basically human.

What about Christopher Raglands performance did you like?

He has a good adaptable voice for story telling, young and old, male and female characters, he makes them alll believable.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

If I had the time, yes!

This is an easy listen, with interesting characters. There are a couple of cycle chases which take place, very descriptive, they reminded me of car chases in a movie, if you like that sort of thing.

the narration of the book is great and well in sync with the characters in the book, it takes a light hearted stance which is how the book portrays this young lawyers life in Teaxas

it`s easy going.. after reading several heavy, indepth law based fiction books, which were very good, this was a nice light alternative before the next complicated one

Not sure if he`s narrated any before that I`ve listened to, but liked the style and characterization alot

Not really, not that type of book, but very enjoyable

Good Story, Great Narrator

The plot was a bit obvious (some of the twists w were entirely predictable) but this was more than made up for by good writing and genuine dialogue. The narrator is excellent, compelling and highly impressive during two -way and three-way conversation. Recommended.

Enjoyable but not his best.

Not as good as the Accused but I'm enjoying his work. Looking forward to more listening. Hope you enjoy too.

I enjoy Mark Gimenez's books and this was no exception - although it took a while to get going so that we knew about our character - we seemed to spend a long time establishing just how 'cool' he is, but once it got going, I enjoyed it - certainly easy listening. However, the narration was dreadful - Christopher Ragland absolutely gabbled his way through it at top speed as if he had somewhere more exciting to be. A shame.

While Arsenault lays the groundwork for an investigative, gripping murder mystery set in an idyllic Connecticut suburb, Hvam gives a chameleon-like performance of multiple characters of varying ages and backgrounds. Arsenault's novel jumps back and forth through time from 1991, just before Rose's disappearance, to 2006, when Nora and Charlotte must confront the tragedy once again. Hvram's ability to translate the deep, soothing voice of adult Nora into a vibrant childlike tone of the 11-year-old Nora is particularly enjoyable. As they begin to unearth dark details surrounding the event, Hvam's tone becomes increasingly investigative, discerning, and severe. Her versatile characterizations elevate the novel in a positively alarming way.

In Search of the Rose Notes wraps you into its addictive "whodunit" narrative quickly and deliberately, with Hvam as a valuable guide. Arsenault's tightly wound crime novel is a triumph in its own right, but Hvam's delivery will make the experience all the more pulse-pounding.

Well written images but a tedious story

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

The frequent jumps from present time to the past were substantially overdone. All the talk among the grade school friends, while initially cute and clever, became quite tedious.
