great read by the narrator

What did you love best about The Singapore School of Villainy?

I always enjoy material written about Singapore especially fiction and I have read others in thi sseries.

What about Jonathan Keebles performance did you like?

I love this artists work, His command of the accents that are so diverse in the dialogue could not be faulted in this read.

Entertaining

Inspector Singh may not have proved the most popular of detective characters, but as an overweight Sikh surviving in the Singapore police he is one of the more unusual. I have heard all three recordings now, with the engaging Jonathan Keeble juggling Sikh, Malaysian, English and other accents with aplomb. There are two other books in the series which have not yet been recorded, and I hope they will make it on to audible. Light, diverting, with a flavour of the country - in this case Singapore, though the others offer Bali and Malaysia.

Good story kept me guessing till the end. Singh is an amusing character that I can mentally make out.

A Singaporean Surprise

An unusual detective story. Inspector Singh is not the most likeable character. Astute, bullying, greedy and short tempered. However he does have an unerring ability to read people.

Given his character's idiosyncrasies and Singapore being reflected as an authoritarian state, this novel surprisingly comes together.

The cast of characters, largely devious lawyers and disgruntled wives, takes a backseat to the maverick that is Inspector Singh.

More than just "O.K. lah"!

Maybe it is because I found that I could identify with many of the characters in this tale of modern day Singapore than made it appeal to me.

A well written and very well narrated story made it a listening pleasure.

I look forward to hearing more of the corpulent Inspector Singh!

You cannot go wrong with anything Jack Higgins has ever written. Every character series he's created is engaging, addictive and you never want to put the book down. The fact his publisher has adopted ebooks makes it a great pleasure to take everywhere. I know he is getting up there in age, but I have to say that he is a true gem and the finest author I have read and NOT ONE BOOK I HAVE READ ever let me down. From start to finish; fantastic. Sometimes you may sense a familiar plot line, but he turns it when you think you have it figured out. Yeah, the hero will live (most often) but you know what, that's what a great story teller.

A bit thin.

I am very much an admirer of Jack Higgins and his writing, the way he tells his tales and specifically the subject of his stories. However, I am much more a fan of his Sean Dillon character than I am of Paul Chavasse.

Very good! Held my interest which meant some work at home didn't get done.

I'm afraid at 71 y.o., I have problems with my memory--I should write a book report as soon as I finish each book. I have read over 20 of Higgins' books in the past two months ranging from 1960's to 2014 copyrights and I have trouble keeping titles straight with stories.

But, I still love them while I read them.

Great Story-Horrible Narrator

Wonderful story about family, friends, mistakes, love and forgiveness.

Frustrating and unbelievable fail as Narrator... eating, drinking and noisy movements and breathing can be heard through the entire book. If the story would not have been so engaging and true to real life I would have stopped listening and returned it. I will not purchase another with this Narrator.

great story!

This was a great story and I will not hesitate to purchase other audio books from this author. The narration was well done and I liked how the male voices sounded masculine and the women's voices didn't all sound the same. What bothered me though was that you could hear the narrator swallowing almost after every sentence or pause and it even sounded at times like she had a candy in her mouth. If you are grossed out by other peoples spit (sorry for the rude word!) you may want to either skip this one or listen to it through speakers - the sounds may have been more noticeable since I listened to it with my itouch.

I love Barbara Delinsky's books!

She has a way of capturing real life in her books. This one shows how real life can fall apart and be put back together good as new.

Uncomfortable

Yuck on the narration. Infidelity itself is bad enough without this scenario. The ending doesn't seem likely.

Annoying chewing sounds

I like the author. The story has good potential if it wasn't for the constant chewing sound (gum chewing?) made by the narrator. The narrator has done a good job in other books I've listened to, even if her voice is a bit too raspy. But the constant chewing noise was so annoying I couldn't make it past 2 hours.

Natasha is such a wimp that she makes me cringe. She is afraid of everything. That hubby of hers definitely is ARROGANT!!!

My first compelling Harlequin story !

I've never heard such a good story which typical of Harlequine that compelled me to give 5 stars and write a good review. In fact I rarely give a chance for this kind of series. I purchased the audiobook because of the narrator Jenny Sterlin. Again she brilliantly proved herself worthy of my two thumbs up with her talented voices, especially Leo Christakis's sexy Greek accent.

One Across, Two Down

This fairly early, well 70s, RR novel centres around Stanley Manning, a middle-aged crossword fanatic (hence the title) and his long - suffering wife, Vera. Maud, Vera's spiteful and lazy resident mother makes Stanley's life hell, but via her own admission of great fortune leads Stanley to construct the puzzle of his life.

I did enjoy this book. As ever, RR evokes a suburban world of gossip, intrigue and hidden lives behind respectable net curtains. Stanley is a typical antihero of this genre.

The narrator, Nicky Henson, had a pleasantly deep voice which was particularly suited to the male roles. That said, when he attempts the female roles of say, Maud and Ethel, well let's just say that he channels Monty Python. The recording was also a little echoey at times, but it wasn't particularly distracting.

stanley is obsessed with doing crossword puzzles and the money maud with leave when she dies to her daughter, his wife, and all the plans he has to spend it.

well written characters, down trodden viv who works to keep them afloat, stanley who would rather laze at home than work and maud who thinks her daughter could have done far better than marry stanley wanting viv to leave him and live with her.

this is the first book I have listened to by ruth rendall and is very much of its time when twenty thousand pounds was a fortune.

nicky Henson performed the book well doing a reasonably good female voices although he has a deep voice.

I enjoyed the book.

Suspenseful and entertaining

A book like this is well suited to the audio format, being both entertaining and easy to follow. It has an intriguing set-up in the battle of wills between a rich old woman scheming to drag her downtrodden daughter away from her no-good husband, and the no-good husband scheming to inherit his mother-in-law's money. There is a current of suspense running through the story that is Hitchcockian in tone, with twists in the plot to the end.

Nicky Henson is a clear and expressive narrator. True, the mother-in-law does sometimes sound like she's wandered out of a Monty Python sketch, but otherwise the characters are well differentiated and the pacing and phrasing are excellent.

Ruth Rendell's writing features precise and descriptive language with well-rounded characters. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book and will seek out more of her backlist I've never got around to reading.

A good story, but a lot of characters

I always have enjoyed this author, and especially this narrator. I listened to this book, and it was an exciting story. Even though I enjoyed it, I got very confused with all the characters. I still don't know who some of them are. There were so many names and nationalites that I got confused. But that being said, it had me on the edge of my seat. Even if you can't remember all the characters, you get the gist of the story, and it's very exciting and entertaining. I recommend it. Maybe take notes....

Non stop action ...

I guess some people found it hard to keep track of all the characters. I had no such problem. I found the pace a little hectic at times and had to take a break just to catch my breath. It is a very intense book, but very well written and surprisingly (especially for this genre) believable. He accurately captures a lot of the politics of the middle east ... not easy to do. I lived there for a decade and the politics are incredibly complicated if you haven't lived them ... but DeMille succeeds where so many authors have failed. Highly recommend this book if you like your action mixed with politics and complex characters.

Not the usual entertaining characters

I have read everything that Nelson DeMille wrote, and I think he walks on water among writers. He, not only is a master of intrigue, character development and plot interest, but usually manages to bring levity to the most tense situations with a clever, articulate male protagonist. This one had virtually no character development, from my point of view, and almost read like a tragic documentary. It was a tragic historical thesis, and heroic on the part of the characters; but they were shallow--just political. I'm not sorry I got it, but was truly looking forward to a DeMille treat. I have read his books, admittedly, in reverse chronology; but am rarely disappointed.

I enjoyed this audiobook, and I generally don't have a problem following characters, but there was quite a few in this so that on occasion I was like who is that person? This audiobook I feel like I could go back and listen to it again, and glean more from it. Nelson DeMille's books are always so informative, though, and I always learn a lot along with the story. I was curios to look up Babylon after this book. I had just listened to Spencerville by Nelson DeMille before this one, and I, personally, liked Spencerville more, but this is a good book, too.

Great Read

Where does Genesis rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

It is up there with the best of them

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Maybe not "on the edge of my seat" but I definitely cared about what would happen next. The story had enough mystery to have me hooked.

Which scene was your favorite?

It is hard to choose a favorite but one that stands out as well written was one of the scenes between Sara Linton and Will Trent in Sara's living room. The under-current of sexual tension combined with their awkwardness rang with authenticity.

Who was the most memorable character of Genesis and why?

The slow reveal of the kidnapper's character combined with not understanding his motivation makes him memorable

Any additional comments?

As with all Karin Slaughter novels there are enough unexpected turns to keep the reader engaged without becoming frustrating or losing credibility.

Had to keep listening!

I often listen to audio books just before I go to sleep; just put the ten-minute timer on and drop off. Not with this book. I found I just had to keep listening. I was deeply involved with the characters, their problems, their lives, their survival skills, their development through the story. It is Karin Slaughter's depth of character observation in this book that elevates Genesis way above the average crime drama.

Typical Karin Slaughter

I have read several of Karin's books and have to say that I have enjoyed them all. My problem is that I have not read them sequentially, so the continuation of the main characters and their life story is a little lost on me, but that said, it does not detract from the main plot of the story and the missed history can be picked up quite easily. So not much lost there.

Well worth a listen in my opinion.

Loved it from start to finish. Karin Slaughter's style of writing is easy to follow, not at all contrived or misleading. Each character has their own voice and the narrator does them justice. Can't wait to listen to more.

Good Read

I love Sherryl Wood's books. This was a good read as a second in the series. I'm anxious to read Book 3. I do have to admit the Grandmother's Irish accent was distracting but the Texas accent on the bride of the brother.....the WORST. I'm from Texas and found it very offensive and not at all authentic. Not the author's fault.

Rehash

Book two was too much like book one in its constant attempts by the new couple to understand each other. The other problem is the reader who is no Barbara Rosenblat. Too bad, Worst is the attempt to make third generation Grandma sound Irish.

Just Ok

I have read a few books in this O'Briens series by the author. The books are easy to listen to and you don't have to pay much attention if you are doing something else. However, all the books seem to sound the same. At the end of her books too the author seems to get bored and just ties everything up.

Narrarator is a robot

Would be so much better with another narrator...The story was a bit repetitive and not as good as the others in the series.

Portobello's Lovely Mean Streets

I you love London from afar, this is a great book. Tim Curry is simply marvelous and brings all the characters to life.

FASCINATING AND WELL-READ

The interweaving of the various plots and characters is masterful. This is one of the best of Rendell's novels I've read. The characters are fascinating. Their failings and struggles are involving and often touching. And, miracle of miracles, it doesn't end in misery! The narrator does a wonderful job with all the different accents. He portrays women well, which is challenging. This is an audiobook that you can read over and over again. Ten stars.

Marvelous story and reader

Tim curry should read everything! Wonderful reader. And I love the characters in Ruth Randell's books. I am addicted, although not to chic orange candies. Would like to try, though.....

Highly recommend!!!

Literary equivalent of a choc orange.

Some will like it. Some will not. Most, I believe will enjoy the performance of Tim Curry's chocolate voice but the narrative will leave a sour taste behind.

interesting insight

As ususal huston does a good job with the aerospace type tech thriller. SOME of the characters are a bit unbelievable but good overall. Love the idea of givin it to all them islamic terrorists. Sort of like the fun you get during a 24 episode when jack bauer does some good torture. Unbelievable sequence near the ending climax. Having been a Marine sniper I know thats possible, probable and IMPOSSIBLE, and I don't mean lucky, but impossible. Knowing how the blue angels pick their aviators, at least in general, unlikely this guy would have been picked. Also, they are a VERY tight group and I suspect would be resentful of the enourmous outside interference they get. But over all, a great listen I would reccomend to the military/terrorist thriller crowd.

A good listen if you enjoy Huston books. It was not as exciting as most of his but was well worth the listen.

Another great book by James Huston. yet it has to be said narration is really bad.
