Christmas is the perfect time to start from scratch
Lieutenant Sully Jax saved his unit during an IED attack, but he couldn't save his marriage. He can't even remember it. Recovered from his injuries, he's come home to the family and friends he knows-and an ex-wife who's a stranger to him.
Lucy Crabtree was heartbroken last Christmas when Sully announced his plan to go on one last tour of duty, and devastated when he asked for a divorce after he awoke in the hospital with no memory of her. She's finally moving on from her hurt and from losing the man she loved more than anything, and her cookie-baking business is taking off just in time for the holidays. But now Sully's back, and she can't deny she still loves him. But how can she trust her heart to someone who breaks it every time she sees him?
Sully might not remember Lucy, but something inside won't let her go. With every bite of her cookies, he finds a new love for Lucy, and he soon realizes he wants to rebuild his life...with her by his side.

The healing power of warm cookies
This was one of the toughest things I've read in a long while. The story is all to true for many go our service members - and many injured stateside and recovering from TBI. Stacy weaves the tale of a young soldier with no memory of his wife or marriage, hilighting not only his demons, but the story of a wife equally devastated by war.
Truth be told, I nearly gave up reading this book. The story and struggles hit a little too close to home. Yet, the warmth, tenderness, and truth of the story held me as I spent the day with Lucy & Sullivan. The challenges were real, as were the emotions shared. Stacy doesn't try to sugar-coat the reality of war and it's devastation on families - but instead builds the characters and hope that can rebuild love once known, as well as the healing power of patience, kindness, and a few cookies.
In the end, a beautiful story of love and recovery that offers hope during the holiday season.
Prepare for your heart to hurt...
Such a well done novella! So much story packed into it. And the angst, oh the angst! My heart hurt for Lucy so many times in the story. It's not very often an author can get me to feel SO MUCH for a character. And I really want to try Lucy's Pfeffernusse!
Unexpected humor kept popping up amongst all the heartbreak:
"Every time you say you hate Christmas, one of Santa's elves explores." "Shut up and give me a fry."
"Enjoying the holiday traditions while terrorizing you all at the same time. It doesn't get any better than this."
Lucy tilted her head, considering. "I don't think I've ever consciously thought of the word breeder in my life. Oh, wait. I just did."
When you get to the "A year from now, month from now, week from now, day from now" speech...ohhh it was so lovely I highlighted it and read it 3 times.
At the end of the book make sure you go to the author's website to ready a nice long epilogue and the letter Sullivan wrote to his buddy's children at Christmas.
