His kiss left her flushed and disconcerted - perhaps men were best avoided after all.
The Earl of Tredair has had his fill of balls, routs, and silly misses, and he despairs of finding someone extraordinary - that is, until he meets Miss Fanny Waverley.
Most unique and intriguing, Fanny and her two sisters are the adopted daughters of the reclusive bluestocking Madame Waverley. They have been raised as her disciples to spread the word of women's rights and to encourage poor oppressed females to stand up against the iniquities of the male sex.
The beautiful and farouche Miss Fanny, however, finds it quite difficult to think of all men as cruel and lustful beasts - how can she when she finds herself longing to kiss one of the most hated of his breed?

Not up to Chesney's Usual Standards
Marion Chesney is an extremely prolific author, writing both period and contemporary novels and series of mystery and romance under several names, including Marion Chesney and, probably best known, M.C. Beaton. I have read books from several of her series, including contemporary, Regency, Victorian and Edwardian mysteries. I have enjoyed almost all of them. They are written with a light hand, enjoyable without serious pretension.
I have especially enjoyed her Edwardian series and the Hamish MacBeth series. So when I saw a listing for a Chesney Victorian series, I anticipated the pleasure I had experienced in the Edwardian series. Alas, despite the intriguing underlying concept (a set of sisters who have been raised in, and have adopted, the ideals and goals of women's rights, especially women's suffrage), the book felt flat and uninteresting to me.
This book was missing all the light, humorous touches which I had come to expect from Chesney. The characters, especially the sisters, seemed dull and lifeless despite the fact that the plot contained more than a little action. Finally, many of the occurrences in the plot were simply not believable, and no amount of humor could cover up or diminish that fact. Despite the best efforts of narrator Vanessa Benjamin, she could not give this book enough life to make it enjoyable.
I will continue to read other Chesney books for those times when I just want a light, humorous break, but I doubt that I will continue this Waverly Women series.
    mediocre and predictible
the story line predictable and boring, abrupt ending left no desire to read book 2
    Disappointing
    Any additional comments?
I usually find Beaton/Chesney's light Regency romps fun and entertaining, but this one fell short of the mark for me. The narration was flat and lifeless.

Accomplished spy Aden St. George prefers to stay away from the frivolous ton, especially after the way his mother was used by the Prince Regent. But his latest mission compels him to guard unconventional, vibrant Lady Vivien Shaw. Rescuing her from kidnappers was easy. Resisting her beauty is not. Duty demands he keep an eye on her, and naturally, his lips soon follow. For someone who views entanglements as a weakness, this is pure, delicious folly. Though grateful for Aden's help, Vivien has secrets she must keep hidden. Yet with her abductors still at large, she needs Aden's protection almost as much as she craves his touch.

    Painful
What did you like best about Secrets for Seducing a Royal Bodyguard? What did you like least?
I have listened to only four hours of this book, and I'm sorry, I just cannot go on! I really, really like Veida Dehmlow, but even she couldn't make this enjoyable. I'm not certain I can adequately describe the tedium. For every moment of dialogue there was at least 3-5 minutes of inner contemplation, and most of this centered on how badly the character had been treated by a family member but how much the character cherished the family member anyway. Or how the hero was instantly taken with the heroine (or vice versa) and how unsettling the feeling was. The hero and heroine are often unsettled, and amidst all this inner turmoil, they're busy gazing at each other's lips or observing social proprieties..and all of this while escaping kidnappers. There was so much thinking after each spoken sentence that I'd forget what was said to get the person thinking. I thought that after the first few chapters there would be more dialogue and less explanation of the situation through inner reflection, but I finally gave up hope. I didn't like any of the characters, but especially the heroine, who was the epitome of stupidity.
What could Vanessa Kelly have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
She could've gotten someone else to write it for her. It was a decent premise...maybe she could've just provided an outline.
    Which scene was your favorite?
I never got to one I liked.
Was Secrets for Seducing a Royal Bodyguard worth the listening time?
    No!

    Publisher's Summary:
Hiding secrets and a past she longs to forget, Hortense Jennings answers an ad for a governess and embarks on an adventure she did not expect.
Concealed in a gothic, crumbling manor on the edge of a North Sea cliff, Baron Simon Wolstenholme is hiding from life. Horribly scarred from battle wounds, he lives up to his name The Beast of Stonecliff in both appearance and attitude until he realizes how lonely he has become.
Simon propositions Hortense for a singular night of passion. Raging weather and storms of anger clash between a lonely man and a distrustful woman to reveal secret desires in an emotional crescendo. Can the Governess and the Beast find calm amid the storm and admit their true feelings, or will pride destroy the fairy tale before it begins?
    Members Reviews:
    Historical finery
This was an interesting historical take on Beauty and the Beast, except Beauty carries scars of her own. A former soldier, Simon was damaged and scarred in battle. He has grown reclusive, a subject of gossip by the people in the village. He has shunned his friends and acquaintances. But now he is lonely. He wants company, female company.
To this end, he puts out an ad for a governess for his ward and then plans on making more of the woman who appears. This woman is Hortense, who is desperately trying to begin a new life for herself. I actually felt really bad for her, because the offer Simon puts forth basically brings her right back to her former life and yet really, what choice did she have? Good for her for putting conditions on it.
One night together, thats what they have between them and they have sex. A lot of sex and Simon is very focused on making things good for Hortense. A lovely thing, that Simon.
As far as the BDSM aspect goes, its very light. A bit of tie up is the farthest they go and it was not done as I would have expected, so I liked it all the more.
I have to admit, while I am a fan of audiobooks, this narrators performance detracted from the book. While her delivery during descriptions was spot on, dialogue tended to be very over dramatic and made me view the characters as ridiculous when they shouldnt have been.
As this is a short tale, there is a lot of sex for the length but thats what the story is about. There is insta-love, as well, but it worked for me. Something I particularly liked was that the situation Hortense found herself in when her father died was exactly what could happen back in those times of women having no status. This is an easy, quick read, particularly for historical fans.
    Mixed opinions....
For what this is I did enjoy it. The idea was formed well, and for something so short it was developed well. Yet still I'm left with the unsettled sense of differing oppinions.
I rarely listen to erotica but a love a good book with well placed and detailed erotic scenes, the sexual tension preceding to it. Senseless sex and crass language a distraction from a good book in my opinion. Yet this story wasn't erotic in a heated sense of tension built.... but it was graphical. Again a mix of differing opinions.
NARRATOR: I found that something lacked in the delivery.... the intonation of the male character was all wrong.... even the female at times... yet it didn't bother that much except my frustration at being distracted from the story....

    Sweet Tender Story
This is the third book of the MacKenzie brothers. This is the story of Amelia, who is a determined spitfire and Knox who is a strong and honorable Laird. They meet after Amelia and her nephew escape from Edinborough Scotland and end up at the Laird's land. The story evolves into a tender, sensual, and tension filled love story with light adventure.
The narration was really good. I liked her unique way of pausing and emphasizing when she's reading.
If you enjoy sweet, feel good romances like me...then this is for you. (FYI: this book is written in the first person.....so if you don't particularly enjoy books written like that, you may want to skip this one.)
    A good surprise!
Where does Highlander Mine rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
One of the better, definitely. Unique story, with differentiated characters, though I wish there was more time devoted to the beginning, before she runs, to give a better feel for the situation, and would have made it less of a fluffy piece.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Amelia. She is a strong protagonist without becoming a shrew. I suppose since it is first person, that might skew my opinion slightly, and she might be a tad of an unreliable narrator, as she views the keep with rose tinted glasses.
    Which scene was your favorite?
Boat scene...the one not in the water. Yep, listen or read the book, and you will understand. Yummy, with a taste of determination.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
A gambler to the core? Not sure
    Any additional comments?
This is a rare find, a good historical romance written in first person. I wanted to smack Hamish quite a few times; the author kept telling us he was brilliant, but he was a bit annoying overall, and I did not see how he was anything above the norm. There isn't much detail given on the everyday hardships of the people at the keep, though this might be intentional, to show the protagonist viewing the place as paradise. I wish it were a touch grittier. As it was, it was good, but missing that extra something that would have made it great. The narrator was a nice surprise.

    Mysterious, Laughter, Love -- Enjoyable
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I enjoyed the mystery behind the letters and the man who showed up looking like Georgie's dead husband. The story kept you wondering who was all involved.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I liked both Con and Archer, especially their friendship that brought humor to the story.
Have you listened to any of Anne Flosniks other performances before? How does this one compare?
Anne's performance is as usual. I like her voice, but at times is has an annoying sound to me. However, that will not keep me from listening to her.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The fact that Lettuce(?) was the villain at this point, I thought it was Mary..
    Any additional comments?
I didn't see the connection between Lettuce being able to get the jewels. I will have to go over that part again. I couldn't stand Con's niece and her attitude.
    Really boring
Would you try another book from Manda Collins and/or Anne Flosnik?
Yes by Anne flosnik manda Collins maybe
Would you ever listen to anything by Manda Collins again?
Probably but this is very boring and seems like a copy of an Amanda Quick novel not original
What three words best describe Anne Flosniks voice?
Low deep throaty I like her voice and she gives. Life to this dreary manuscript.
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
    No
    Any additional comments?
I saw the cover on amazon kindle and the cover was better than the book. This is so boring, one dimensional I can't stand it for more than 10 min at a time.

    Bravo!
This was a sweet romance. I was a bit skeptical about the hero's abrupt change of heart regarding the heroine, it we from icy to blazing in an instant. Then I just thought I'd just go with it. I'm glad I did. It was worth putting a little trust into the author.
    The narration was great too.

    Members Reviews:
    I like stories of Alaska
I enjoyed the story line, in parts it seemed unlikely but it was entertaining. I do recommend changing the cover picture. The book stressed over and over Gwyn's curly hair. The cover picture is important to this reader since I look at it over and over while listening to the book.
Thank you Tracie and Kimberly for providing such good spiritual counsel through out this book.
Seems Okay, Just Not My Fav
I can't seem to stay focused on this story. It just isn't holding my attention. The story line seems a little trite in spots. A character has a secret and is vacillating between hide or reveal. Meanwhile a sinister character will probably find out and threaten to tell. I listen for a while then need to turn it off. I have been turning on and off for more than a month and am just half through. It probably gets better, but I don't think that I will finish it.
Great story set in Alaska territory!
Would you listen to All Things Hidden again? Why?
Absolutely! There were a lot of different story elements going on but not so many to cause confusion. The author does a great job of tying the the different parts together.
What was one of the most memorable moments of All Things Hidden?
There was an emotionally raw scene towards the end that brought me to tears. I was surprised by this unexpected twist and felt like I was experiencing the tragedy along with the characters.
Which character as performed by Barbara Caruso was your favorite?
Hard to say. This narrator did an exceptional job with each of the characters. She was sometimes a little "sing-songy" but overall, I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book because of her performance.
    Any additional comments?
This story might be classified as historical fiction because of the place and time period, however, there is no real history threaded through the story. This in no way diminishes the quality of the story but readers shouldn't expect to be "transported in time".

    Members Reviews:
    What a lovely scandal.
Setting: Moxley, and London, England 1817
    Genre: Romance
Narration: Susan Duerden gives a good performance. She has very good range in giving voice to the different characters.
The characters, even the minor ones, are well-written. Lady Rebecca is a lovely young woman being held, pretty much, prisoner by her greedy aunt and uncle. Daniel is the wastrel heir of the Marquess of Wolvington. They meet at the Kingsborough Ball and Daniel decides that she is the answer to his dilemma - he needs to marry by the end of the Season. Rebecca wants to avoid being married off to an elderly, lecherous peer, and Daniel might be a preferable option. The repartee is amusing and the plot is compelling enough that I couldn't put it down. I like that the characters, especially Daniel, grow during the course of the book. It was, overall, a satisfying use of my time.
    Worth the credit? Definitely.
What a great story. NOT FULL OF ANGST!
This was such a great story. I loved that it was not full of angst the whole way through. Fantastic relief. More authors should write books with less angst like this one.
I absolutely loved the heroine in this story. She was funny, charming, very witty, beautiful and so happy, especially considering how she was treated by her aunt and uncle.
Loved Daniel, he was handsome, smart, and such a hero!
The chemistry between the two is fantastic. I really loved the way they got to know each other, I mean really and truly got to know each other. Yes there was attraction at first sight but it was so much more than that. The sex scenes were very very well written. They really liked each other in and out of bed. LOL The honesty between them is so great and not the norm for historical romance novels.
The story line and plot are great. The story flowed so well and just when you thought oh noo there is going to be a misunderstanding here... there wasn't!
I listened/read this in one day it so much fun to listen too, A genuine treat!
I totally recommend this book for all you historical romance fans that want to read a book with less angst and a hero and heroine you can really believe are made for each other.
As for the narration, it was fantastic. Susan Duerden did a fantastic job as usual. The men sound like men the women sound like women, all the characters get their own distinct voice. She reads with all the emotion the story calls for. Perfect narrator for this book!
Just a great very well written story! I want to see more of this author on audible!

Wish there were more to the series!
I absolutely adore the series. I somehow managed to skip the first two books and read the third and I liked it so much that I purchased the last two books and read them all in three days. Now I must go back and read the first two books. The characters are built so completely that as a reader you really feel connected to them. Yes as most books go, in order to have the story last longer, the main characters always have to fight their inner feelings and go against what they truly want in order to save the person they love and this series is no different. To tell the truth I do not find this appealing at all in romance. Perhaps that is a personal fault of mine and not that of the author. And yes I do believe in sacrifice but once I make up my mind I dive in and dont leave room for doubt and try never to second-guess myself. So its hard for me to see all the inner push and pull associated with characters in romance in general. Still, I strongly recommend at least the last three books I have read in the series regardless of my distaste for the parts mentioned.
    Same thing, chapter after chapter

    Any additional comments?
I read this entire series and loved every story but Sophie was just to TSTL sometimes. Her thinking that she just couldn't "see" herself was silly then she slept with our hero in Italy, ran away, then decided to be his lover when they got back to London. It was just too much. I couldn't finish. Sorry.. I gave it 3 stars because I liked Nicholas so much.
As always, Ashfore MacNab was fabulous.

ANOTHER HIT FOR THIS AUTHOR! A MUST READ!
MARY FRAN AND MATTHEW by Grace Burrowes is a delightful Scottish Victorian Historical Romance. A Novella. #1.5 in the "MacGregor" Trilogy. And features the MacGregor's sister, Lady Mary Frances MacGregor Flinn, a Scottish widow who hates the English military and Matthew Daniels,an English Colonel who is reported to left the military in disgrace, and who is also part Scottish. A quick read! Faced paced and ties up some lose ends from "The Bridegroom Wore Plaid". A very intense but sweet story filled with secrets, passion and love. Secrets revealed, passion ignites and love burns turn and hot. It is only 75 pages, but a lot is packed into those 75 pages! A must read! Another hit for author Grace Burrowes. She is a constant storyteller, her stories are passionate, charming, engaging, and her characters realistic. I am looking forward to more of the MacGregor Brothers. Personal buy.

    Nice little novella
After readingOnce Upon a Tartan (MacGregor Trilogy), which I loved, I decided to download this little novella. It was a treat and I'm glad the author didn't decide to draw it out into a long book. We know fromBridegroom Wore Plaid, that this love story happened quickly so it seems logical that it is a short story. Both main characters are sympathetic and as the reader I was desperate for them both to find some happiness. The little mystery in the background was quickly solved and didn't cause major problems. Overall a very satisfying read.
    great read
cant wait to read next book in the series!
    Mary Fran and Matthew
I love Grace Burrowes stories of the MacGregor and Flynn families. Mary Fran daughter, Fiona, is a wonderful character in the book. Mary Fran is trying to run the castle, keep track of her brothers, have paying guests and keep up with Fiona. Matthew and his family are the paying guests. Matthew is interested in Mary Fran but she tries to keep her distance. She is Scottish and he is English and that makes the two of them even more interesting to read about. The only problem with the book is that it is a novella instead of a full novel.
    Good for the series.
A nice addition to the series.
