    Not her best
    +++Minor Spoilers+++
I love romance for the romance part of books. This one doesn't happen until the very, very end. The writing isn't bad but I got fed up with the H always reading the riot act to the h, even when he deserved it more. It felt uneven to me since the H didn't show much care towards his mother, his estate and his duties but he was quick to turn the table on the h for things he thought she did wrong.
I'm not a big fan of reading about the H appearing at the opera with one of his women. It's not romantic and detracts from the story in my opinion as it shows at that late point that she didn't figure much in his life. At that point she didn't.
    I'd pass on this one.
    Lord.....
This is a solid 2.5, somewhere between OK and good. The great plot deserved better main characters, dialogue, and believability

can't wait for the next book
the narrator was great. victoria roberts now has 2 highlander books on audio and I can't wait for the next one. she not only spins a tale of mystery and romance but adds sword fighting as only highlanders can fight, with heros and heroines. I loved it.
    Loved the story
The story was great. The narrator needs to work on the men's voices. They sounded a bit to much like a woman. .
    Horrible narration and lacklustre writing.
A decent editor could tidy up this story into something workable as the bones of it aren't bad but the author has a regrettable tendency towards repeating herself, often within the same sentence, which succeeds in making nonsense of the prose, i.e. a reflection having a reflection. The narrator however, is the last nail in the coffin and this one seems to feel that a Highland burr can only be effectively conveyed by ending every phrase with a rising terminal, thereby making them all sound like questions. She also endows the heroine with high-pitched voiced, perhaps intending to portray her youth and scatter-brained choices, but which merely results in becoming an added irritant.
3.5* ENJOYABLE BUT SADLY NOT MEMORABLE
I love 'Highlander' stories with their kilt wearing, broadsword wielding, handsome Alpha Highlanders and, whilst this was entertaining, it was also quite predictable. An arranged marriage, the heroine forced to betray the hero but it all worked out in the end.
Maybe it's because I have listened to so many in this genre that the bar has been set high with other more exciting books, yes there was romance, feuds, betrayal, secrets, sex a bit of drama and a bitter manipulative Father but it all felt rather 'light' listening and it just wasn't gritty enough for me.
Worth a credit? If you want a fairly tame Highland tale where everyone's nice, caring and kind to each other (except the Father) then you'll enjoy this listen but I think it's one to put in your Wish List and wait for a sale.
Just where is Book 2 in this entertaining series?
Would you listen to To Wed a Wicked Highlander again? Why?
Given time this tightly written tale will mostly definitely become a go to book for easy, uncomplicated entertainment. You can NEVER go wrong with a Carrington MacDuffie reading.
What was one of the most memorable moments of To Wed a Wicked Highlander?
I liked and appreciated the way the author incorporated what is now known as early Alzheimer's disease in the character of Alexander's aunt. Her scenes were amusing and touching at the same time.
Have you listened to any of Carrington MacDuffies other performances before? How does this one compare?
Carrington MacDuffie ranks among my top 3 female readers. I've yet to listen to a single reading that she's failed to nail the characters & essence of the story.

    Title: Charlotte Collins
Subtitle: A Continuation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice
    Author: Jennifer Becton
    Narrator: Anne Day-Jones
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 14 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-21-13
    Publisher: Jennifer Becton
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 49 votes
    Genres: Romance, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
When Charlotte Lucas married Mr. Collins in Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, she believed herself to be fortunate indeed. Her nuptials gained her a comfortable home and financial security. If she acquired these things at the expense of true love, it did not matter one whit. To Charlotte, love in marriage was nothing more than a pleasant coincidence.
As the years of her marriage dragged by, Charlotte began to question her idea of love as she suffered continual embarrassment at her husband's simpering and fawning manners. When Mr. Collins dies, finally relieving everyone of his tedious conversation, Charlotte must work feverishly to secure her income and home. She gives no further thought to the prospect of love until her flighty sister Maria begs her to act as her chaperone in place of their ailing parents. Hoping to prevent Maria from also entering an unhappy union, Charlotte agrees, and they are quickly thrust into a world of country dances, dinner parties, and marriageable gentlemen.
But when an unprincipled gentleman compromises Charlotte's reputation, her romantic thoughts disappear at the prospect of losing her independence. As she struggles to extricate herself from her slander, her situation reveals both the nature of each gentleman and of true love.
    Members Reviews:
    Charming But Different Narrator, Please
Charlotte Lucas was one of the most intriguing characters in Pride and Prejudice, so I was delighted when I stumbled across this "spin-off."
And for the most part, it wasn't a wretched disappointment. There were moments of laugh-out-loud merriment, and I was particularly delighted that Mr. Collins was offed right there in the first paragraph. Ah, Charlotte's new life begins at last! And her little sister, Maria, moves in with her and helps her live it.
There is a lot of charm here. Maria is a goader, a prompter, a thorn in Charlotte's side. And a major concern. Lots of Charlotte's energy has to be devoted to chaperoning her, rather than to thinking about and living her own life. But Maria does get Charlotte to wonder about those widow's clothes she's been wearing, about that widow's life she's been living.
And when Maria starts attracting suitors? Well, those suitors have chaperones also, don't they? And some of them aren't half bad.
I really liked that the writing here, the situations were kept true to the time period. Charlotte's worries and woes are real, given such, and she's fleshed out well-enough that we worry right along with her. I also liked that there was tension even though I knew how it would all turn out. I found my toes curling with delight, hoping that this character would say this and that character would do that. How fun.
What kept this from being a four-star listen, though, was the narration. Anne Day-Jones does a perfectly respectable job with the narrative, but her delivery of male voices, our hero most importantly, comes out flat and monotonous. Even her delivery of Charlotte at the end starts falling into the "dull" vein. So the only thing that keeps the reader/listener going is the writing, the text itself (Great job, Jennifer Becton!).

Loved my trip to the fair with Deeanne Gist!
Lovely narrator although she mispronounced a couple of words. It wasn't distracting. She had the perfect voice for the herione.
He's losing his hearing and she's a teacher for the deaf.
Loved, loved, loved all the historical tidbits and that Deeanne included them in Editorial notes at the end of the book. I totally get what she is talking about--it is hard to leave a story world that you love. She takes the reader there beautifully.
Great voice as usual, fascinating characterization, unique storyline, bibliotherapy elements, and on audio--what more could I ask for?
    Ambivalent
I'm not sure how to rate or review this book. I admit to being a sucker for a good love story, but I felt the circumstances here were too contrived and the naivete of Della was unbelievable. I was thinking that the book was getting a bit tedious when the situation arose where Cullen had to "prove he was who he said he was." With that, I almost stopped listening to the book because it was beginning to feel like a not-well-done romance novel. Nevertheless, I kept listening, just for the sake of resolution, I guess.
Having been to Chicago a couple of times and having read Devil in the White City, I was initially hoping to learn a little more about Chicago or the world's fair. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to glean much information about either from this book. The author readily admits to taking historical license (and I do appreciate her telling us where she took liberties), but I felt "gypped."
    Wonderful story -Chicago's World Fair!!
It's 1893, and the Chicago World's Fair is hugely popular. While much of the rest of the country is facing bank shutdowns and lost mortgages, everything new and extravagant is happening at the Fair. North Carolina farmer, Cullen McNamara, is highly allergic to his cotton fields but he's also a talented inventor. He's created an automatic sprinkler system for putting out fires. His father gambles his farm on Cullen's ability to sell his product at the fair.
Della Wentworth is a teacher for deaf children. The whole school has been transported to the Fair for exhibiting the children learning to lip read. When Cullen's increasing hearing loss gets in the way of speaking to customers, he hires Della to teach him to lip read. Though they both see this as only a business relationship, they find each other to be increasingly great company.
The relationship between the characters is wonderfully portrayed, but the descriptions of the Fair and specific events from real history, puts this book over for top for an excellent read.

Shouldn't the French speak with a French accent?
The story was interesting but having all the characters speak with the same English accent was disappointing. It would have been a four star book if the main female character who was French, spoke with a French accent. Then, when the French ruffians spoke, they had a cockney type accent, Hello, they are French!!!!
    The angel
Love this story, kept my interest while driving at night. I can't wait for another
    Enjoyable and Exciting Despite Improbability
I truly enjoyed this although, honestly, I'm not sure I would have enjoyed it quite as much if I'd read it instead of listening to the audio. It was very long and I sit in front of a computer all day reading tiny lines of code, my poor eyes and head are losing their tolerance for long tomes such as this. Plus, I think the narrator did an excellent job. Some may nitpick about her not doing a French accent, but I'd rather forgo the accent than listen to one that is poorly done. Plus she really kept the listener engaged and added to the sense of suspense and excitement.
The setting is medieval. Sometime during the hundreds of years that France and England were trying to destroy one another. The story is action-packed and full of twists and turns that were not always predictable I was on the edge of my seat at times, unable to find a good stopping place so I could go to bed, etc. It all takes place in 5-6 months time, but so much happens that it's almost hard to believe. There are other things that are a bit unbelievable, but I was able to overlook them and still highly enjoy the story. Yet, I must quibble because I enjoy complaining. Plus if I wasn't emotionally engaged, I wouldn't care enough to bitch about it :)
The heroine, Ryen De Bouries (aka 'The Angel of Death') leads a French army against the English with her two older brothers under her command. Huh? I could have more easily swallowed that she was a knight under their command, yet highly regarded for her wit and strategic mind. When I think of a female knight, I can't help picturing Brienne from HBO's Game of Thrones who is as big as a man and would never be described as conventionally feminine. Ryen, on the other hand, is not very large. She's described as dainty and soft looking when not in armor and knows how to play the part of a Lady. She's skilled at swordplay and fighting, but relies on her wit more than her strength since she is not as strong as the male knights.

    great historical romance
Intrigue, mystery, deception and romance. I couldn't put it down. the narrator was great and since the book is inexpensive it's well worth the price.
This is not the same Robyn Carr
I hate to think that Audible has added these old Robyn Carr books in order to take advantage of her popular Virgin River novels and her loyal fans from that series. Don't be fooled. These are early works of this author and not her element. The best I can say to describe this book would be young adult but the sex eliminates that possibility. The language doesn't work. Ms. Carr needs to stay in her element of modern day.
    Troubling Listen...Good and Bad
I am almost at a loss to figure out how I feel about this book. The beginning is extremely slow and it drug on and I felt like for sure I was going to dislike this book. The book has an interesting element of the War of the Roses history in it which I enjoyed...but I had trouble wrapping my arms around the actual romantic part of the story. I don't feel like the romance was developed enough and the characters were developed enough for me to really care about them in the beginning of the book it took quite a long time for me to even care what happened to anybody in the book.
I began to get interested about halfway to three quarters of the way through the book. While it held my interest it wasn't one of those books that I just didn't want to put down I mean I was almost listening because I just had to find out what happened in the end. The book is too long in my opinion and there's a lot of stuff that could be eliminated. It's definitely not one of Robyn Carr's best. I wish that this same story could be written over and maybe (I hate to say a better job done) of writing it because I'm no writer myself and never would claim to be but I just feel like if Carr was at her best when she wrote this particular book it would have been a much better listen. Overall it just seems like it was written before Carr had honed her skills and perfected her craft!
I spent 14 hours listening to what seemed like the Cliffs Notes of a story.
So question is it creditworthy....... I don't know. I believe it's worthy if its on sale but at the same time the listener have to have a lot of patience.

    Disappointed Sarah McCarty Fan
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I am a huge fan of Sarah Mccarty but this book was a let down. Not her usual story line. I would tell my friend to maybe skip this one.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
The characters lacked depth and the story line was a little boring. So unlike her other books.
How could the performance have been better?
I thought the narrator was dry.
    Poor narrator ruins mediocre story
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The narrator's attempts at male voices was hard to get past. The story needed more action as well.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
Glimpses into prior characters ongoing lives was fascinating. The least was the narrators male voices sounded like hillbillies. Sarah's stories are usually so erotic and romantic but it is hard to feel that way when the voices turn you off.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The choice of a female narrator reading a male dominated story is truly unfortunate. Especially when most of the males sound the same and only slightly different from the females. They sounded like they were from hills of Tennessee not Texas.
What would have made this romance irresistible?
If it had been read by Jason Adams from Sam's Creed or Zoe Winslow from Caine's Reckoning. They brought the stories to life.
    Very disappointing
Not the quality of the prior books
Weak plot, weak writing, drawn out and only fair narrator.
Hate to see it go down.
    Frist Book Was Better
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
This book was missing something. Not sure what it was but I hoped for more
If youve listened to books by Sarah McCarty before, how does this one compare?
Sarah McCarty has done better.I love her work but this did nothing for me.
    dry as dust.
I had to struggle to get through this book, and initially, I thought it was because I lacked an interest in the heroine but nope- it's just not up to the same quality as Sarah's other books. This was not helped by Paula Hoffman. She needs to practise, perhaps take some acting classes-SOMETHING! There is a difference between reading a story and making the listener feel like they are in the story. She physically can't sound like a man( she tried and it was an epic fail) nor is she able to create that place where you know you are listening to a woman speaking as a man but it works anyway.

    Love, Forgivness, Grace and Mercy
I purchased this book during a sale on Audible a while ago and tucked it away for a rainy day (it rained yesterday!). This is a Christian historical that is a bit slow going at first but speeds up as the story progresses. (Now that I finished the book I appreciate the unhurriedness of the beginning as it proved beneficial for story and character development)
Without giving too much away, the main character Meg was sent to an elite boarding school as a child by her thieving father because he wanted a better life for her. As a result Meg feels abandoned, unloved and makes bad decisions that bring consequences. Along the way she meets good and bad people who influence her life in ways she never dreamed. She learns life lessons that effect not only herself but those close to her.
Although there is a bit of romance in the story the real "love" story God's love, grace, forgiveness, and mercy for those who feel unwanted, unloved, and undeserving. It's a story of faith that everyone can relate to at one time or another.
I have to also say the narrator did a wonderful job. Her voices for both the male and female as well as younger or older people was spot on. She made the listen even better.
I recommend this book If you enjoy good faith based Christian stories with a good message of true Love. It is a book that leaves you believing there is hope!. ;-)
    Amazing book
This book was so entertaining that it has become one of my favorites. To top it off, the narrator was excellent!

    Publisher's Summary:
Lady Eilis Dunbarton's life undergoes a drastic change with the death of her cousin, Agnes. Now she's faced with the disagreeable prospect of marrying the man who was to be her cousin's husband. Not by a change of contract, though. Instead, by deceit - pretending to be her cousin. But if her husband-to-be discovers she's not really Agnes, her life is forfeit. So what choice does Eilis have but to flee?
When Laird James MacNeill's clan rescues a half-drowned lass from the sea, there is speculation she is of the enemy clan, especially since she doesn't remember her own name. James is immediately enticed with the lady, but his focus must remain on finding the proper bride. For if he does not wed soon, he must give up his holdings to one of his younger brothers.
Focus slips away with each day Eilis is close, and James finds himself contemplating the thought of taking her to wife without knowing her true identity.
But how dangerous would the end result be?
And what will happen if Eilis's husband-to-be comes looking for her only to find her in the arms of another man?

    Simple Sweet Highland Story
I read the other reviews before I listened to this book so I was expecting it to be terrible but I thought is was good. It was a sweet simple feel good story....and there is nothing wrong with that. I also didnt mind the narrator. I thought her voice fit the story. To each his own I guess.
I really wanted to like it but........
I love Highland books but I found this one soooooo slow - I had to double speed it to get through it. Didn't like the narrator either and I think it may have been better with a much more skilled person reading it.
Worth a credit? Na - save it for a better one.
Fun story, not so great narration.
The story is good and exciting but the narrator seemed to be rushing to speak. It was hurried and made me feel like I needed to take a breath just from listening! The accents were bad, I certainly have heard worse! If you can get past the narration its good.
    A romance with heart.
What did you love best about The Accidental Highland Hero?
The narration was perfect for this story. This romance novel delivered a good tail without getting too over done as romance novels tend to do. The story reflected the place and time well,
What other book might you compare The Accidental Highland Hero to and why?
Good historical novels have some of the best elements in this book.
What does Maxine Lennon bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
The narration was essential to the story. Reading instead of hearing would be much less of an experience,
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No. It was just a nice experience.
    Any additional comments?
    Kudos to the narrator.
    Wrong narrator
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
No - the performance was truely excruciating.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
The aspects of highland life she chose to show - least was the all too obvious foreshadowing.
Would you be willing to try another one of Maxine Lennons performances?
    no
Do you think The Accidental Highland Hero needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
sure, there are some good characters and situations that I can easily see readers wanting to follow if they can get past the performance in the first book.
