In this episode of The Well Podcast, Pastor Phil and Pastor Chad talk about the parable of the Good Samaritan and answer the question, “Who is my neighbor?”
The Jews thought that loving their neighbor meant loving people who were like them and who were close to them. But Jesus challenged that mindset with the parable of the Good Samaritan. The parable of the Good Samaritan teaches us that we have to balance our care for people with sharing the gospel. If we’re not sharing the gospel, then what have we accomplished when we care for people?
The most prevailing emotion Jesus expressed in the gospels was compassion. You can’t love God and not love your neighbor, and vice versa. As you grow in your love for God, you should be growing in your heart and compassion for the weak.
Does loving your neighbor mean you should help everyone who is in need at any time and in any way possible? Sometimes, if we can’t do everything, we just decide to do nothing. The reality is, you can’t do everything, but God is calling you to do something. Do for someone what you wish you could do for everyone.
The parable of the Good Samaritan is a story about preserving human life, caring for people, and believing that everyone has value in God’s eyes. The Samaritan believed that everyone matters to God, and he allowed compassion to move him to action. Your identity dictates your activity. If your identity is rooted in Jesus, you will love your neighbor because Jesus loves them.
