As a child & adolescent therapist, I love to explore different types of therapy for children. I do know that a “one size fits all” approach to therapy is not effective…what works for one, may not work for another. Recently, I’ve come across a type of therapy, one that I know little about but am really looking forward to learning more. It’s equine assisted therapy, a type of therapy for children that involves horses. I’ve heard of canine therapy, using dogs, but horses…how cool is that?

So I’ve invited my guest Trish Jeffrey, to help us learn more about equine assisted therapy. She earned her EAGALA certification in equine assisted therapy and has been providing equine therapy for adults, children and groups. Equine assisted therapy is different from therapeutic riding, in that the child does not ride the horse.

We’ll explore the benefit of equine therapy for children with both emotional and behavioral challenges. You’ll learn how children facing challenges such as ADHD, autism, trauma and everyday stressors, including bullying or phobias can both learn and heal with this type of therapy. Even children with a fear of animals can learn to overcome their fear…talk about empowerment!
