Shelley and Lynette discuss at length the importance of imrpovisation and the attitude of ‘yes and’. This is a fundamental belief of theater groups using imrpovisation. Yes and means “accept the reality and add to it”. For example if the child says the blocks need to line up you can say “Yes and the chairs like it too.” Then follow that statement with the action of lining up chairs. Of course the next step is to create varied patterns and fun together but step on is always ‘yes and.’ And when the child adds a new thought like “No chairs are better in a circle.” You restate a new ‘Yes and shoes are best in a square.’ Etcetera.

Christy herself has an illness which is her term for disability. Christy has the inherited disorder known as Ehlers-Danlos, which is a connective tissue disorder that has led to many surgeries and dislocations. Learning how to have a healthy dating and sexually active life has been a challenge and she wishes to share her tips and tricks for overcoming diversity in the face of dating.

Given the numbers of people who are molested and/or raped in the disabled community simply because they have not learned how to read signals and avoid triggers this is an important area that needs to be talked about.

Together Christy and Lynette try to break down some of the barriers to just such a discussion.

He was uninformed and looking for a real connection when he saw a newspaper clipping about a comedy troupe composed of four members with Asperger’s. They called themselves, Asperger’s Are Us. Intrigued he decided to meet them. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Lynette and Alex discuss the myths that were made evident during the making of this documentary and the very real talent of these four men with unusual perspectives. Alex shares his behind the scenes experience with many other comedians and states that the social challenges of being able to cooperate, as a team for the members of Asperger’s Are Us is equal to any troupe he has videoed.

Sandi Johnson has been on the show before. Sandi, a children’s author and songwriter, has been friends with Lynette since 1994. When she first met Lynette autism was a foreign word and she had no idea her life would also one day revolve around the spectrum of autism.

Sandi’s son was murdered several years ago, leaving Sandi to raise his autistic son.  Sandi’s daughter also has an autistic child. Life is different now.

The last time Sandi was on the show Lynette offered to give Sandi and her grandchildren, neurofeedback as a gift. On this episode Sandi and Lynette discuss the benefits of that therapeutic visit and the particulars of raising a grandchild with the diagnosis of autism while still grieving your murdered son.

This is the first of several revisits as Lynette plans to go back and check in with a handful of past interviewees. Learning how things evolve in a home populated by spectrum personalities is a blessing for parents just beginning to walk the path.

Therese Davis is also a co winner of the People of Distinction Humanitarian Award. Because of their great works in the world of Autism both Lynette and Therese received the humanitarian award in Washington DC, September 2016. This is where the two women met. However, this is definitely NOT where the friendship ends.

Therese Davis has assisted in creating a pilot program that introduces the neuro-typical child to the friendship of our spectrum children. It is just getting off the ground but well worth investing your time and attention into. Her son Terrence is the subject of the documentary Bass Clef Bliss- Terrence’s Path. Terrence is autistic, plays the bass saxophone and is as the advertisements say “A Young man at the intersection of Autism Hope and Music. The movie is getting great reviews and is heartwarming but it isn’t just Terrence who will warm your heart it is Therese as well.

Lynette and Therese share more than autism and the humanitarian awards and motherhood, they share the mission of ‘Autism Action and Integration.’ Acceptance without action is just permission to sit at my table while I do nothing to help you.

Today’s guest is the daughter every parent wants. Tamis Barron is both a supportive daughter, and a proactive one. For example in an attempt to make her father’s last years joyous she has gone above and beyond, sharing her time, attention and finances. An out of the box thinker Tamis bought her dad a car he cannot drive and that was a GREAT idea. She also created an event he couldn’t comprehend, until he did. Proving that this was also a great idea.

Tamis invited Lynette to speak and teach play/behavior techniques and neurofeedback. She also invited her father, her friends and a pastor. The entire event was held at a nearby church decorated in fall colors and beautiful tapestries.

Tamis is a dynamo dreamer who follows her dreams. A collector of memorabilia and creator of wigged costumes. Tamis is quirky awesome. She and her father obviously share in the same gene pool.

Tamis teaches singing and her students lay on the floor to sing with gusto in costumed glory. Nothing is typical here, and that is a blessing.
