Wayne Gilpin, President of Future Horizons, joins Lynette Louise The Brain Broad. They discuss the creation and future of Future Horizons. Wayne kindly shares his very personal reasons for building the company and the beautiful memories that keep him going. Several years ago Wayne’s son passed unexpectedly. Since his was the reason for creating an autism focused publishing house it took great courage to continue to run the company. Wayne shares in detail the challenge of staying focused and keeping an ability to see the humor of autism. Wayne feels his humor in this arena passed away when his son did.

A journalism student at SDSU, she starts working toward her masters at Northwestern in the Fall.

Author Rupert Isaacson shares the journey from devastation to proactive choosing after his son Rowan was diagnosed with autism and showed a remarkable affinity for horses. In the documentary and the book (both of which Rupert offers during the GREAT GUEST GIVEAWAY) Rowan, mom and dad travel to Mongolia for horsemanship and Shamanism.  What resulted was the remediation of some of Rowan’s more extreme symptoms of autism.

This second of three episodes in my series of teachings focuses on the question “Is self abuse and/or violence inherent in autism or is it us?” I ask this question because in home after home by changing how the child is responded to I see the violence and self-abuse dissipate to nothingness. But that doesn’t mean the problem isn’t coming from the condition of the child’s sensory system. It does mean that very quickly we contaminate the situation with our efforts to help.

In deciding what to talk about asked myself “What is the biggest confusion I repeatedly see in homes around the world related to challenges with skill acquisition and autism.” The answer was “Why don’t the skills generalize?”

Today I am going to answer that question with what I believe is an inherent problem in the way the primary behavioral approach used with autism works. Today I explain the way in which I see ABA as increasing autism like symptoms and the way in which I see many of the child centered programs as not useful enough for language acquisition.
