I would like to say this is the only time I have done this show. But unfortunately coming home from a trip to the news that there has been another school shooting is almost becoming common place. Rye and I have spoken on the subject before.

But in case you didn’t hear it or in case we have something new to say I invited him to speak with me again. How sad to be able to report that school violence is fast becoming common place. Despite this very obvious fact we still lie to ourselves and children by declaring that school is a good thing.

If it were a good thing the results would be peace and connectedness not violence and ostracization.

Time for a new plan.

Jason Padgett geometric artist and author of Struck By Genius: How a Brain Injury Made Me A Mathematical Marvel went from store clerk with a love of partying to almost dead at the hands of muggers. RPM stands for Rapid Prompting Method and describes a fast becoming popular way of teaching verbally challenged children to communicate via stencils/ letter boards and independent typing. It is more recent adaption to facilitated communication originally called supported typing.

These methods are seen as controversial so to give it a voice from the people actually benefitting and gaining deeper connections with their children Lynette interviews three moms with three very different children using RPM.

In this mom free for all we get a chance to hear several stories of success and improvement as well as a little brain science on how these misunderstanding of our ASD kiddos are created. A great moment in the show happens when we get to imagine two siblings finally managing to dis on one of their parents and commiserate in the manner all siblings were meant to commiserate.

As she explains on the show her method targets the communication needs of people with autism who are 6+, talk in sentences and read.  So if your child fits into that group listen up this may be for you. How she says it works is “It systematically teaches people with autism to express and understand words, gestures, and feelings to have conversations successfully – the main need of many families I’ve helped throughout my career.”

Lynette and Karen compare notes on going into family homes and making a difference from within. Lynette (our Brain Broad) also shares some stories of ‘before technology’ teaching in case you need a cheaper version to work with.

Mike Ryan is a certified clinical hyperbaric technologist at Hope Connection in Boston, Massachusetts. He’s been working with families and children at Hope since 2007, when he and 2 other families founded the Hope Connection. And Lynette is thrilled to have him on the show. She has been seeking a professional to answer her questions on hyperbaric for over a year. So of course she has lots of good questions.

Fortunately Mike, who is a college graduate and past secretary of the Northeast Chapter to the Undersea Hyperbaric Medical Society, has lots of answers.

As one of the founders of Hope, Mike makes awareness of HBOT a big part of his work and ‘hopes’ more families and parents take the time to learn about hyperbaric oxygen. Using hyperbaric for autism is an off label application of the therapy. Perhaps that is why it was hard to find someone to interview. For whatever reason Mike is a willing guest and a font of answers.

Paul explains the severe challenge of dealing with a diagnosis as a moment of grief. Letting go of the dream you had for the child you expected to raise and then falling in love with the one you actually have requires an intentional shift in focus.

Paul shares the lack of autism information he had despite his professional training and how important it is to change that moving forward. Together Lynette and Paul discuss the need for directions from their diagnostician once the label is set in place.

To solve these problems Paul intends to create THE HINDSIGHT PROJECT with the intention of finding the cause, a solution and a proper prescriptive approach by 2020. Reem Mouawad, today’s guest, is the director of FISTA Step Together a residential program for special needs children in Lebanon. The mission of this center is to improve the quality of life for challenged people through individualized therapy and instruction.

Lebanon struggles with perpetual states of war and unrest. Special needs children are not well accepted and finding adequate education is difficult. Additionally the educational centers that do exist have a great struggle getting funding due to the lack of governmental involvement.

Rim and Lynette are working to bring a new therapy into the school. Ironically having the opportunity to train an entire staff of teachers in the art and science of neurofeedback might put their school ahead of most in America. Step Together is a Rudolph Steiner Waldorf school employing natural methods of teaching and sharing.
