This week on WDDD, Sarah recounts the tragic tale of the untimely and needless passing of Reeva Steenkamp, a promising South African model, actress, and emerging advocate for women's rights.
Oscar Pistorius, a South African Paralympic athlete, fatally shot his partner Reeva Steenkamp on February 14, 2013, asserting that he had mistaken her for an intruder. Following a widely publicized trial, he was initially found guilty of culpable homicide. However, an appeal led to his conviction of murder in 2015. In 2017, Pistorius was sentenced to 13 years in prison. This case spurred discussions on self-defense, firearm regulation, and domestic abuse.
Tragically ironic, Reeva lost her life at the hands of her intimate partner just one day prior to delivering a speech addressing the impact of domestic violence in South Africa.
Tune in as we delve into this heart-wrenching and preventable narrative.

This week on WDDD? La Shaunda takes us on a journey down under once again. In the 1980s, Australia was rocked by the shocking series of brutal crimes orchestrated by David and Catherine Birnie, known as the Moorehouse Murders. Once inside, the couple inflicted unspeakable horrors upon their victims, subjecting them to sexual assault, torture, and ultimately, murder. The reign of terror perpetrated by the Birnies finally came to an end in 1986 when a potential victim managed to escape and promptly alerted the authorities. Subsequently, the couple was brought to justice, facing convictions for multiple counts of murder, sexual assault, and kidnapping. As a consequence of their crimes, they were sentenced to life imprisonment.

This week on WDDD, La Shaunda brings to light the chilling tale of Melvin Rees, infamously known as the Sex Beast (we hate that it kind of rhymes).
Traveling back to a seemingly safer and more trusting era in America, where doors remained unlocked, and strangers were assisted without a second thought, Melvin Rees exploited the trusting nature of the time. Over a period of two years in the late 1950s, Rees perpetrated at least 5 heinous murders in Virginia and Maryland. Among his victims was an unfortunate family in Virginia, who experienced unspeakable brutality.
The story unfolds when the family's abandoned car is discovered on the roadside, triggering a relentless search to find them. As investigators delve deeper into the case, they stumble upon what can only be described as a sinister sex dungeon, revealing even more grisly discoveries in its wake.

This week on WDDD? La Shaunda brings us back to Nazi Germany circa WW2. As if things weren't crazy and awful enough, queue Szilvester Matuska, a man sexually motivated by carnage and tragedy.
Matuska had a passion for explosives and learned all about them during WW1. Years later as his passion for trains was taking hold, he had the devious idea to combine the two in a bid to see as much carnage as he could create.
It may have been around this time that Matuksa realized he was more into destruction than even he realized. Possibly one of the only people to ever be thought to have had symphorophilia(sexual interest and arousal derived from stage-managing the occurrence of a disaster and then watching it), Matuska's motivations went beyond those of your everyday terrorist.
Join us for this sad and strange tale.
