Elliot Ackerman has served five tours in Iraq and Afghanistan as a U.S. Marine Corps officer and CIA officer. Over the past 10 days he and his cohorts have ‘unofficially’ evacuated around 200 people from Kabul airport.

“We gave these people our word, that if they worked with us, we would stand shoulder to shoulder with them.”

“Any decent human being would have a hard time turning their back on these pleas for help.”

Ackerman describes he and his operatives’ timely evacuation of 29 Afghans yesterday. They were able to get the group into the airport just 20 minutes before the Islamic State suicide bomb went off.

With the Aug 31 deadline for the U.S. to be withdrawn from Afghanistan looming, Ackerman gives his battle-honed perspective on the best course to take, both diplomatically and on the ground, going forward.

Member of Afghan Parliament and activist, Farzana Kochai, was a child when the Taliban last occupied Afghanistan. She remembers then, the ban on girls attending school, on women working, and women needing a chaperone if they wanted to go outside their homes.

Farzana is now risking her life to speak out to preserve something of the freedoms and democracy gained over the past twenty years.

After being in a state of shock for the first days of the Taliban occupation of Kabul, she then became the first female Afghan politician to participate in political debate–broadcast to the world, she says.

“We talked about the…future of women and the use of Parliament in the future of the regime that is going to be formed in Afghanistan.”

“I choose to stay here…to be with my people, my women, in my country, as we can't just leave. All of us–we can't leave. And here we need some people to speak up for us.”

This isn’t the first time, retired U.S. Marine Colonel and U.S. diplomat to the Asia Pacific, Grant Newsham has seen America caught in a crisis like what’s unfolding now in Afghanistan.

It’s reminiscent of the fall of South Vietnam in 1975: The Viet Cong picked up on the withdrawal of U.S. contractors–more or less, the withdrawal of U.S. support.

“That was a huge boost for the North Vietnamese in South Vietnam’s case. And for the Taliban, they see the Americans are on the way out, and the end is pretty much predictable.”

The aftershock of what’s happened won’t be limited to Afghanistan, he says.

“Whenever America looks dazed, confused...or looks weak, it gives a certain type of regime an opportunity.”

“​​The people that run…the US military, the government, the Biden administration, I hope they've got their wits about them, because something's coming.”

Kabul-based reporter, Ali Latifi says he goes out each day to the streets to face his fear and to show the Taliban, “I’m not going to stop living my life.”

Afghanistan-born, Latifi, returned to Kabul from the U.S. to live in 2013. He now faces a very altered way of life in his birth City.“The fear exists that one day they'll come to my house or one day they'll just stop me on the street, and I don't know what they'll do.”

Latifi says he doesn’t want to be “driven out” by the Taliban, while acknowledging others don’t have the luxury, as he does, of being able to leave—He describes hundreds engaged in a desperate standoff with U.S. forces, trying to enter Kabul airport.

“I want to try and continue to tell the story of this place. And…try and last here as long as I can, but I honestly don't know how long that will be.”

Dr. Noorchashm suggests that the answer to this could lie partly in the phenomena of vaccine spoilage. 

“It's a medicine, just like any other medicine. It's got a failure rate…, and we should accept that.”

“They're worried that a substantial number of people are not going to find out that the vaccine didn't work for them.”

Currently, the delta variant of COVID-19 is being used by the Government to explain the high occurrence of breakthrough infections. However, Dr. Noorchashm suggests, vaccine spoilage is a more likely explanation.

While a strong believer in vaccination, Dr. Noorchashm argues that determining individual immunity rather than blanket vaccination is the ‘Achilles heel’ to overcoming COVID-19.

Today marks the official start of Mayor Bill de Blasio’s “Key to NYC” vaccine mandate. In theory, this puts restaurants, bars, gyms, and other venues off limits to the unvaccinated. To some, this is a welcome safeguard of their health, to others, it is a sign of expanding government control over their lives.

Against the colorful and dynamic backdrops of Times Square and Broadway Ave, I probed local New Yorkers as well as a few out-of-towners on their feelings towards NYC’s vaccine mandate. A rich emotional tapestry from fear and frustration to relief and hope for better times ahead was on display.

This is what retired U.S. Marine, AZ State Sen. Sonny Borrelli’s request to the AZ-AG to investigate BOS non-compliance with the latest subpoenas for the audit could result in. 

“What happens when our government diplomacy breaks down?” Sen. Borrelli asks rhetorically, referring to the Board of Supervisors continued refusal to provide materials such as routers and voting machines for the audit.

“They call in the marines! …Diplomacy [has] broken down… And the oath I took at 18 years old in 1977 has not expired,” he answers, referring to the oath made by U.S. Marines to defend and uphold the U.S. Constitution.
